Castillo-San Felip-Del-Morro, also known as El-Morro, is a fortress built between the 16th and 18th centuries in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Located on the northwestern part of Old San Juan Island, San Felipe del Morro Castle is named after King Philip II of Spain. The fort, also called El Morro, was designed to guard the entrance to San Juan Bay and protect the Spanish colonial port city of San Juan from maritime enemies.
During Spanish rule on the island of El Morro, also known for attacks from foreign powers and for its resilience.
In 1593, Portuguese soldiers sent from Lisbon on the orders of Philip II formed the first garrison of the fortress of San Felipe del Morro in Puerto Rico.
In 1595, the Englishman Sir Francis Drake unsuccessfully attacked San Juan with his fleet at the Battle of San Juan.
In 1598 the English attacked again under the leadership of George Clifford.
Clifford succeeded because he attacked San Juan by land rather than trying to enter through San Juan Bay. However, a dysentery epidemic forced him to flee the island after the Battle of San Juan.
In 1625, the Dutch, led by Boudewijn Hendrix, also attacked the island in imitation of George Clifford’s land invasion. The invaders were able to pass in front of the castle’s defenders and into the harbor, out of the reach of the city’s cannons. El Morro managed to hold out against the siege and eventually forced the Dutch to retire, although the attackers were able to sack and burn the city before abandoning the Battle of San Juan.
In 1797, British General Ralph Abercrombie and Admiral Henry Harvey invaded the island of Puerto Rico with a detachment of 7–13,000 men. Captain-General Don Ramon de Castro and his troops repelled the attack. Abercrombie and Harvey were defeated at the Battle of San Juan.
El Morro’s last stand was during the naval bombardment of the US Navy during the Spanish-American War of 1898, which ended the era of naval warfare in the Caribbean, at least in the classical sense.
During the Spanish–American War, the castle was attacked by American naval forces at least three times, the largest of which was the bombardment of San Juan on May 12, 1898. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris, under which Spain ceded ownership of the islands of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Guam, and the Philippines to the United States.

El Unco Reserve, or Caribbean National Forest is the largest tropical forest in which nature is preserved in its original state. Here, tourists can relax in the shade of trees, admire waterfalls and forest lakes, as well as rare plants and animals (for example, bright green Amazonian parrots that are endangered live here). El Unco is located very close to San Juan, and after a noisy metropolitan life, it can be very nice to relax like this and feel like a child of nature. Beaches
