Sample ZIP Codes from All 50 States (and more)

I needed sample ZIP codes from all 50 states, so that I could test a website feature I’ve been working on. There are many sites that allow you to look up a ZIP code by city and state, but I was looking for a quick reference all on one page.

I couldn’t find one right away, so I built my own. I thought it may be useful to someone else, so I’m posting it here.

[Update, 11-Dec-2014: When I posted this initially, I accidentally transposed the ZIP codes for Annapolis, MD, and Boston, MA. I have fixed that now.]

Zip Code is the Zip Code used in the United States by the United States Postal Service (USPS). The word ZIP, always written in capital letters, is an abbreviation for Zone Improvement Plan , or «zoning improvement plan.» Moreover, this word should mean that thanks to the ZIP system, mail moves efficiently and quickly.

The main postal code consists of five decimal digits. There is an extension called ZIP + 4 , which adds four more digits to these five base digits, so mail can be addressed to a specific location rather than a zip code.

The English term zip code was originally a USPS registered trademark but has expired.

Cameroon Postal Code

The Postal Services established ZIP zones for major American cities in 1943. For example, let’s take a look at the following two addresses:

John Smith
3256 Epiphenomenal Avenue
Minneapolis 16 , Minnesota
Wikimedia Foundation Inc.
200 2 d Ave. South # 358
St. Petersburg 1 , Florida

The numbers «16» in the first example and «1» in the second represent postal zone in the city.

In the early 1960s, the need for a more general system arose. So five-digit postal codes were introduced for for the whole country. Postcodes were originally optional. The concept of postcodes was originally developed by postal worker Robert Moon. The latter came up with a three-digit code (the first three in the ZIP system) to describe the region of the United States. In most cases, the last two digits correspond to the old mailbox number. Thus, the above two addresses are written using postal codes as follows:

John Smith
3256 Epiphenomenal Avenue
Minneapolis, MN 554 16
Wikimedia Foundation Inc.
200 2nd Ave. South # 358
St. Petersburg, Florida 337 01

In the early 1960s, the USPS introduced a comic book character called Mr. Zip to promote the use of the zip code, especially to individuals.

In 1967 postcodes became mandatory for bulk mail companies and the system quickly became widespread.

In 1983, the USPS expanded the zip code to a system called ZIP + 4 . For example, the following address contains the ZIP + 4 code:

Wikimedia Foundation Inc.
200 2nd Ave. South # 358
St. Petersburg, FL 33701- 4313

The ZIP+4 zip code uses five main zip code digits and four additional digits to identify a geographic section within a zip code service area: for example, a borough, a group of apartments, a high volume mail recipient, or any other relevant entity to improve sorting and distribution. ZIP + 4 is optional except for some presorted shipments. As a rule, the optical reader automatically determines the ZIP code + 4 from the address, as well as a possible very specific distribution point and prints the POSTNET barcode. This method greatly improved the speed and reliability of mail delivery while keeping costs constant.

For P.O. boxes, each box usually has its own postal code + 4. The extra four digits often consist of the last four digits of the P.O. Box number (padded with zeros if necessary). However, there are no hard and fast rules.

The code 9998 is usually used to indicate the recipient, 9999 — for poste restante and other high numbers for prepaid mail. The code 0001 is used when the postal code represents a single recipient.

Special cases

A certain number of buildings, due to their population or mail volume, have their own zip code, including the Empire State Building (10118) or the White House (20500).

how to write a postal address in English

Postal correspondence and the exchange of paper correspondence are not only a romantic tradition of past centuries. Even today, in the age of the Internet and technology, electronic messages do not replace traditional mail, especially courier delivery.

If we want to send a parcel to relatives, order something in an online store, or indicate our home address when filling out documents, we need to know the rules for issuing postal addresses. This is necessary so that your letter does not get lost on the way to the addressee and does not go to another city or state. Each country has its own characteristics of the postal address. Today we will figure out how to properly issue an address in the UK, America and Russia.

In this article, you will learn how to correctly write a postal address in English, how to format the address of the recipient and the sender, how American and British addresses differ, and how to correctly indicate a Russian address in English.

General rules for writing a postal address

The first rule for filling in a postal address in a letter ( letter ) is legible handwriting. If the exact address, city name, or postal code is written incomprehensibly, there is a great chance that your letter will not be delivered on time and may not reach the addressee at all.

If possible, print out the address after typing it on your computer. If you fill in the address on the envelope by hand, write legibly.

On a postal envelope ( envelope ), as a rule, there are two addresses: the sender and the recipient.

The sender’s address is written in the upper left corner, and the recipient’s address in the lower right corner.

Both of these addresses consist of basic information, which can be called a kind of skeleton for any postal address:

— Addressee
— Name of the organization, if this is a business letter (company’s name)
— Street, house, apartment (street, building, apartment / flat)
— City (city / town) and state (for the USA)
– Postal code (postal / zip code)
— Country

When writing a business letter, the appropriate form of address is placed before the name:

Mr. — any man
Mrs. — a married woman
Miss — to an unmarried woman
Ms. — in the absence of information about the marital status of a woman

For more information on how to write a business letter, read the article “Official letter in English”.

Correct spelling of a postal address in English is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance. You just need to know the peculiarities of the postal service and the address in English of the country to which you are going to send the letter.

UK address in English

The Royal Mail of Great Britain (Royal Mail) recommends writing the name of the city in capital (capital) letters. Dots after treatment (Mr, Mrs, Miss, Ms) and initials are not put. The house number is written before the beginning of the street name.

An example of a UK postal address:

Mr T Hakney
5 Road Hill
SO41 1AA

Address in English in America

The postal address in America has one feature — it is the name of the state, which must be indicated next to the postal code of the recipient and sender. Each of the states has its own unique two-letter designation.

The most popular abbreviation known throughout the world is, of course, NY — New York. Common postal abbreviations for states: CA (California), TX (Texas), WA (Washington) and others. See the full list at the end of the article.

The US Postal Service (USPS) recommends writing all address data for both sender and recipient in capital letters.

CA 92928

Russian postal address in English

In many cases, you may need to indicate your address in Russia in English. But the most common option is, of course, an order in a foreign online store.

The Russian postal address is indicated by analogy with the American one. The most important thing is not to translate the street name into English, but simply to transliterate them.

So, Prospekt Pobedy, for example, should not turn into Victory Avenue, but remain Prospekt Pobedy. So the Russian Post will not get confused in the address.

The number of the house and apartment can be specified in several ways. For brevity, you can specify the name of the street, house number and apartment number separated by a hyphen.

Ul. Queen 49-167 (building 49, apartment 167 on Koroleva street). Such an address will be more understandable to the Russian postal service.

The second way to write the address is to indicate the street as St. (street) and apartment number as apt. (apartment), and indicate the house number without symbols and before the street name.

49 Queen St, apt. 167 (building 49, apartment 167 on Koroleva street). This option can be specified if you are the sender of the letter.

An example of specifying a Russian postal address in English:

Sobolev A.V.
Ul. Petrushina 34-19
Sverdlovskaya oblast

Tip: if you are sending a letter to another country and you need to provide a correct postal address in English, ask the recipient for this information, if possible. This will greatly facilitate the task and you will not worry about whether the letter will reach the addressee.

The most famous address in London

Perhaps the most famous London address in the world is 221b Baker Street, where Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson lived in the works of Arthur Conan Doyle.

It is interesting that when the writer “settled” the brilliant detective and his companion at this address, in reality this house on Baker Street did not exist. At the end of 19century, the street was extended and houses from 215 to 229 appeared. Abbey National was involved in the construction and they faced a problem: now a significant amount of correspondence addressed to Sherlock Holmes was received at a well-known address.

A little later, it was decided to establish a museum named after Sherlock Holmes on Baker Street, but the real number of the house in which it is located is 239. In order to keep the address from the writer’s works for the museum, the company “221b Baker Street” was founded and a corresponding sign appeared on the 239th house .
