Calle san sebastian san juan puerto rico: Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián

San Sebastian Street

calle-de-san-sebastian

When exiting Casa Blanca go straight on San Sebastian Street until you reach the corner with “Calle Cristo”.  There you will find the famous “Plaza San José”, where the “Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián” take place every year on the third weekend of January. You will recognize it because it has the statue of Juan Ponce de León in the center.

Puerto Ricans love to party.  And Puerto Rico has the longest Christmas season in the world.  It all starts on Thanksgiving Day, as the American-inspired turkey dinner tradition takes on a Latin flavor of its own.  Many families literally bring home their turkey in one hand and their Christmas tree and ornaments in the other. Often, while the turkey is roasting away in the oven, the family will be busy decorating their Christmas tree.  From there, the Christmas season extends for approximately seven weeks and it all ends with the “Fiestas de La Calle San Sebastian”.

This hasn’t always been the case.   In colonial times, Christmas season started on the 24th of December with “La Nochebuena” or holy night, that marked the night preceding the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.  From there the period extended until January 6, when the most important festivity, “El Día de Los Reyes Magos” or Three Kings Day” was celebrated.

In 1898, the United States invaded Puerto Rico and brought along Thanksgiving and Santa Claus.  Now don’t forget, Puerto Ricans love to Party.  So now we had this new bird that we learned to stuff with plantains and garlic and a chubby guy, in a red and white suit, without any chimneys to climb into.  So how do you make the best it all?  ¡You party!

Then father Madrazo came along in 1954 and organized the first “Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastian” to collect funds to restore many of the deteriorated structures on the street.  One thing led to another and the organizers decided to include the famous “cabezudos”, which originally wore giant masks representing the Spanish monarchs Fernando and Isabel and marched down the street alongside residents, musicians and participants.

Today the “cabezudos” represent many characters derived from Puerto Rican folklore and march down the street followed by a “comparsa” and thousands of participants.  A “comparsa” is a small musical group that generally includes several plenera drums, güiros and maracas.

But the “Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastian” go way beyond the “cabezudos” parade.  The week-long event also has artisan fairs, chess matches, folkloric events and concerts under the stars.  In fact, it’s the largest event in the world taking place during the month of January.

The religious aspect is kept alive by a procession in honor of the patron saint and a mass that’s traditionally celebrated on Saturday evening.

Fiestas De La Calle San Sebastián 2015

Its party time! The largest street festival in Puerto Rico will take place January 15-18 in Old San Juan.

The origins of the festival date back to the 1950s, when a parish priest of San José Church (second oldest church in the Americas) organized the festival to raise funds for various church buildings and named it in honor of Catholic martyr, St. Sebastian. A few years later it was discontinued but Ricardo Alegría, political advocate and historian, reinstated the festival in the 1970s to benefit an elementary school in the Old San Juan.

Today, the festival is Puerto Rico’s largest street party. Thousands of people flock to Old San Juan for this 4-day celebration. If you have never been to Las Fiestas, don’t miss out! Over 350 artisans will display their work in the Cuartel de Ballajá starting at 10AM. One of our favorite events are the cabezudo parades. You will see people dressed in costume wearing heads of enormous proportions.

Shows and performances will take place in the following squares: Plaza Colón, Plaza del Quinto Centenario, La Barandilla and Plaza de Armas, among other areas.

For the itinerary, click here: https://goo.gl/sz85xh

The festival is a wonderful event and lots of fun, but if you hate crowds, go early! Also, do not drive your rental car into town and opt for public transportation. Traffic is very heavy and it might take hours to get into town by car (see public transport details below). As the evening draws near, the festival switches from a cultural event to a large, crazy party. Yes, drinking is permitted on the street.

Please note during the four-day festival, both forts will be closed.

One of the main places for festivities and recreation for tourists and local residents. On weekends, the old town hosts live music concerts, dances, carnivals and other entertainment. We came here in January — we found a lot of all sorts of events. Well done, Puerto Ricans, they walk merrily and from the heart, it’s nice to watch.

Oh, this cobblestone! Oh, those narrow sidewalks! Having walked a lot around the fortress, we came to this street. And we are with a stroller! There was no time for admiring the local color. That and look as if the stroller did not move out onto the roadway. But the color and variegation made a positive impression.

We came to this street from Plaza San Jose. Very bright multi-colored houses with balconies, and the same famous blue paving stones. Lots of street bars and cafes. There is a festive atmosphere all around. You can imagine how people have fun during a street festival, this is with their Caribbean temperament!

Calle San Sebastian

July 2016 • For two

It was my first visit to the Caribbean, and for me a walk through the old city was the most striking impression. I have never seen such architecture as in Calle San Sebastian. Houses are painted in the brightest colors, balconies and windows with shutters and flowerpots, small shops, restaurants and galleries — all this is so miniature, colorful, positive. It is better to wear comfortable shoes as the roads are stone and slopes.

Like all old San Juan, this street has been beautifully restored. All houses are in excellent condition and painted in bright colors. A feast for the eyes.

Pastel buildings

Nov. 2021 • Solo travel

This street was my first real encounter with Old San Juan. Like most streets, it is narrow, cobbled, and lined with pretty pastel-colored colonial-style houses. It’s beautifully preserved and very whimsical.

WE visited this street. at cosa ostra (seafood restaurant) i ate a small lunch and drank coconut milk straight from frozen cold coconut (delicious and healthy). A bakery called Tortuga (excellent donuts) is now closed. it is very dark at night and many restaurants are closed now.
