Compositor y cantante

Kazakhstan stage of zero | VOXPOPULI
Recently, we recalled the Kazakh stage of the 90s. Today we continue this reportage and have already come close to the turn of the millennium. It was 2000-2001 that turned out to be so fruitful for our stage that many of those who sparkled then turned out to be the main trendsetters on our stage for many years.
LeLoo
In 1997, the clip «Don’t stop» was released on the screens of the country. Then many paid attention to a new group singing disco. By the way, to this day, fans of this group are interested in where they have gone, what happened to these wonderful performers. The secrets of the group are revealed by one of its founders and soloists Kairat Aubakirov:
— It all started back in the late 80s with the Kassa group. We played rock and roll, rockabilly, blues, our own songs. Then all Almaty rock bands were divided into two clubs — «Jean and his friends» with Jean Kasteev and «Baspager». We were in the first rock club, we were going to Seifullin-Shevchenko, and our team included Zhantik, Motor-Roller, Urker, Sasha Tsoi and me, known today, including. Even at the end of the school, they organized the Kassa group, played rock and roll, gave small concerts, even brought the Mister Twister group to Almaty. And at about the same time, they met Saule Atabekova, who was then still working as a backing vocalist for Sasha Tsoi. nine0003
I remember our first clip “It’s funny to me, baby”, which we filmed on film “Svema”. Then they took part in «Zhas Kanat», traveled on tour, which at best took place at a minus. Live concerts were then a real luxury, so we carried a cassette with us, on which we wrote down both the pros and cons. And then they openly began to say to us: “You play live! This is irrelevant! Mini-disk needed! After weighing everything, we decided to change the image, especially since it was in trend — then “My Tatar boy” thundered out of all the irons and pop music was much more in demand. There was also a program by Nariman Isenov on the radio, which was called «Friday» — they played disco-funk, house. At the same time, I came across a cassette of the Jamiroquai group, and for a long time I could not understand who sings: a man or a woman. nine0003
Rock changed to disco, and we changed the name «Kassa» to LeLoo, especially since the film «The Fifth Element» with Milla Jovovich was insanely popular at that time.
Our first clip «Don’t Stop» shot. There I even had to read a recitative, after which they called me the dad of Almaty rap — I just laughed at that. Then we recorded a few more clips, but then our activity decreased, but the LeLoo group still exists — we have our own audience, although not so numerous. Now we are paying more attention to the Nectar project, which we came up with four years ago, it is doing well in the West. On tour in Germany, we are received with a bang. LeLoo continues to exist in studio mode, and we consider Nectar to be a priority. nine0003
I don’t feel any nostalgia for those days. I’m doing what I love, and that’s the most important thing.
ABK group
The group remains in the memory of Kazakhstanis to this day. There are several reasons for this. First of all, Medeu Arynbaev, Kydyrali Bolmanov and Yerlan Kokeev performed quality music. And if earlier Kazakh-language songs were associated exclusively with folklore, then with the advent of ABK, a Kazakh-language «firm» became possible. Yerlan Kokeev believes that the peculiarity of ABK is that it was not the group that promoted the soloists, but the soloists promoted the group. nine0003
— Both I, and Kydyrali, and Medeu before the creation of the group were accomplished artists, each had its own viewer, listener and niche, — says Kokeev. — I worked in the third composition of Dos Mukasan, and even earlier — in the Philharmonic, I was «hardened» by working in restaurants.
The 90s is an unstable time, and our main task was to prove that when united, strength is obtained. In 1996, we teamed up with a group and recorded our first hit «Tamshylar». We wrote the right songs with a competent arrangement and ideology — about love and about the Motherland. Then we toured a lot, even received the Grand Prix for the best clip. nine0003
Many compared ABK with the American group Boyz II Men, but Yerlan Kokeev disagrees with this:
– Each of us was drawn to our favorite music: Kydyrali loved folk music, Medeu gravitated toward the classics, and I gravitated toward jazz. We complemented each other, it turned out a good cocktail.
In 2000, I realized that I needed to move on and left ABK. For some time, Kydyrali and Medeu sang together, but then the history of the group ended by itself.
K7
— The history of K7 began in 2000, when I began to gather musicians around the city. Staffing was very difficult. Nevertheless, I put together my team, which I am proud of to this day. We are an absolutely living team, we, I emphasize, have NEVER “faked”. Maybe that’s why they remember us, — continues Yerlan Kokeev.
And yet, K7 was perceived not so much as a group, but as a solo project by Yerlan Kokeev. But the project is successful and fully completed. Today, three of their main hits remain in the memory of the people: “Where are you far away, lonely happiness?”, “Through the sky” and “Dance in the rain”. The group still continues touring and keeps the bar of professionalism. nine0003
“Of course, it’s hard to blame someone for a failed stage performance,” complains Kokeev. — But the main trouble of show business in the late 90s — early 2000s is that many amateurs climbed onto the stage, for whom money was the main thing. Thus, they distorted the integrity and continuity of musical culture, and as a result, today a generation brought up by amateurs has come to the stage. As a result, we have a level of self-activity. As they say, what they fought for, they ran into. Thank God, there are still guys like Musicola, Batyr, who can still set the heat. nine0003
Tolkyn Zabirova
In the 1990s, most artists conquered the stage by grouping into musical groups, because in the conditions of a wild market it seemed that this was the only way to achieve something. And only by the end of the 90s already well-known solo singers began to return to the stage and new solo singers appeared. One of these is Tolkyn Zabirova. In 2000, she released her first video, which was remembered by contemporaries for its obviously outlandish quality.
In fact, it was she who opened the direction in which new artists will actively go in the next decades — pop music performed by a classical vocalist. nine0003
Today, Zabirov conducts concert work in three directions: chamber classical music, Kazakh folk songs and popular music. During her creative career, Tolkyn Zabirova recorded about 20 video clips, prepared several concert programs, including “Three in One” (2001), “Proud Charm of Posture” (2004), “Music of the Soul” (2006), “Love for Beautiful Music” (2008). And in 2005, Tolkyn even performed Mozart’s motet, accompanied by the popular Russian Moscow Virtuosi orchestra conducted by Vladimir Spivakov! nine0003
Erik Tastembekov
This person can be considered perhaps the most successful producer of the 2000s. The group “101”, Makpal Isabekova, Aikyn, Tequila and much more immediately pop up in my memory. However, few people remember his very first project — the Tengri group. Eric himself recalls:
— They were guys from Ust-Kamenogorsk, I found them in a cafe on Zhandosov-Beregovoy street, where they performed. I listened to their material and I liked them. Just at that time, such music in the style of «Guests from the Future» was in great demand. The guys seemed promising to me, and we started working. In total, three clips were shot: the first — “Waiting for you”, a rehash of the Moloko group “Bring it back”, as well as “New Year” and “Clouds”. They very quickly became part of the touring artists. They were not so young, which gave us hope: professionals, they know their business. But, apparently, when fame falls on your head, then everyone blows the roof. Once they just went on tour to their native Ust-Kamenogorsk and did not return. Since then, I haven’t heard anything about them. nine0003
Well, they did not return, and God bless them. We received fees of $ 3,000 for two, and good riddance. Perhaps they were offended by the fact that I had already worked with the 101 group. And you always work on a new project more than an old one.
« Rakhat Lokum »
Girl bands in Kazakhstan were almost a zero niche for a long time. Perhaps, except for the “duet L”, which we already talked about in our last review, not a single female team became truly famous in the 90s. And literally running into the last car of the outgoing decade, in 2000 a team shot loudly, which for many years will become the most important girl group in the country — Rakhat Lukum. nine0003
Their hit «Wild Rose» to the music of Baigali Serkebaev was sung by the whole country, and the choreographic etude in the middle of the song among Almaty residents was something akin to Gangnam Style in our time.
The ex-soloist of the group, and now the singer and composer Xenia (Ksenia Maslyukova):
– The work was very interesting at first, we were taken to Moscow, where we collaborated with Baigali Serkebaev, recorded songs, he was then our music producer, wrote for us. We danced at the Todes show-ballet school, the video was also filmed in Moscow. Do I need to say that the girls and I were the happiest in the world?! Of course, many of our compositions, such as «Wild Rose», «Tender», «Where is my love», «Do not forget me», «White Snow», fell in love with Kazakhstanis, and no one knew that after a short time the group was transferred to other producers and that the atmosphere inside the team was tense, the creative component of the group dried up, the enthusiasm disappeared more and more … We still performed, but there were no new costumes, no new songs, nothing … And I realized that it was time to change something, since I grew up and felt the strength in myself to embark on an independent voyage. In this I was supported by my parents, who helped me both morally and financially. nine0003
XENIA
It took no more than half a year to prepare Xenia’s own project, and the first song «I’ll forget about you» was released, then there were «Homeless song», «Not a couple», «Unfaithful», «Sagan», “Who Invented Love”, “To You”, “Vita”, “Diagnosis Love”, and after a long break, already this year, the song Understand was accepted by the audience with a bang, and no one believed that our Kazakh performer was singing it.
— Of course, the musical field is not the easiest, it has never been easy here, there has always been a lack of finances to do what you want, at full capacity, but perhaps it is not in vain that they say that an artist must be hungry. nine0003
— Now I write songs not only for myself, but also for our other performers. I feel the pleasure of writing each song, my heart rejoices, perhaps this is my calling, because I like writing songs even more than performing on stage. But I know for sure that I would never have come to understand this if I didn’t have stage experience behind me. Now our show business is not going through the best time, in our country all this is somehow slowly developing, and we cannot be truly heard or seen because of the lack of patriotism for our own music channels. Viewers can understand: such a number of Russian and foreign channels overlaps ours, they are simply not able to compete with foreign ones. But it’s hard for us, the artists, in such a situation to pay the local channels the fabulous amounts they request for rental, given their unprofitability … However, there is the Internet, thank God, which means that not everything is so bad, and who knows where tomorrow you will sing or write song … So there is a blessing in disguise! nine0003
Nurlan men Murat
At the beginning of the 2000s, this band was called, perhaps, the most original duet on the national stage. What can I say if Nurlan and Murat are the first who dared to rap in the Kazakh language, and even mix it with the aria «Gak-ku» from the opera «Kyz Zhibek». Even on MTV’s 12 Angry Spectators program, the clip was received quite favorably. However, as it turned out, it was premature to call them Kazakh rappers.
After «Mahabbat» the famous «Leyla» followed, and the duet finally moved into the pop format. The clips were also their distinguishing feature: one of them for the song «Zhuldyzym» struck everyone with a soul-crushing story, and in the other they even beat their participation in the project «Who will take a million?». Over time, the originality of the group disappeared, they joined the general mass of their colleagues in the shop. Now they are mainly engaged in production activities, and they haven’t given out hits for a long time. nine0003
Sharmani
Sharmani (in the world — Arman Nugmanov) sparkled brightly in the domestic sky in 1999. The image of a young romantic came to the court, and his video “I draw your portrait”, as well as a duet with Sasha Shevchenko in the composition “You are everything I wanted” instantly lifted him to the top of the charts. Towards the end of the year, «New Year’s Eve» sounded strongly. And then Sharmani disappeared as suddenly as he appeared. In connection with his unexpected disappearance, there were a variety of rumors, for example, that the singer had emigrated — no less — to Kyrgyzstan. In fact, the artist in recent years has been making connections with the world show business. And last year, the singer made a comeback singing with American rapper FloRida. Nevertheless, this fact was discussed much more modestly than it could be. nine0003
AR-Club (Adil Zhambakiev, Ruslan Tokhtakhunov)
The history of AR-Club began in the early 90s, when the now famous composer, then a simple musician Adil Zhambakiev was looking for himself in new realities. The debut of the «AR-Club» can be considered a performance in one of the Almaty clubs as an opening act for the then-famous «A-Studio».
Having adopted an oriental style based on Uighur melos, the band obviously did not fail — their songs were sold like hot cakes. Especially fired «Nargiz» and «Khoja Nasreddin». And Ruslan Tokhtakhunov was quite drawn to the role of a frontman. But over time, Adil’s interest in the group subsided somewhat, since the newly recreated Yashlyk group presented great prospects and hopes, and at 1997 «AR-Club» ceased to exist. However, Ruslan Tokhtakhunov did not disappear alone. In his performance, the hits were the songs «Far», where the then unknown Dilnaz Akhmadiyeva appeared in the video, as well as the soundtrack to the TV series «Locust» — «La monetta». In the middle of the 2000s, Ruslan left the stage, like many of his peers, in business. Nevertheless, today he continues to perform at retro concerts, where his songs are in great demand.
Alexander Kirichenko
But Alexander Kirichenko, a native of the Belarusian city of Brest, was one of the most discussed characters in the 90s. Still would! The pioneer of Kazakhstani rock overnight retrained from a well-known hard rock vocalist to an equally popular pop singer!
In 1987, while working as an artist in the republican radio and television center, he joined the rock group «The only way out», which in one season became a real discovery of the rock party in Almaty.
– I fell ill with rock music in my deep youth, and another attempt to climb the rock scene again was a great gift for me, – Kirichenko recalls. — Earlier, for several years, I sang in the Gamma vocal and instrumental ensemble, performing at solemn and festive events, weddings and anniversaries. And when he received an offer from The Only Exit, he changed his role without hesitation. At that time, we were considered one of the heaviest bands of the Almaty rock club. nine0003
A little later, Alexander insisted on submitting the first album of «The only exit» to the All-Union competition of magnetic albums in the genre of rock music. The rest of the group members were sure that it was a gamble to compete with Alisa, Kino and DDT. But in vain! Three years later, when the results were finally summed up, the group was awarded a special encouraging diploma. But by that time, Kirichenko was already working in his own Forpost group.
The first album was a collection of songs not connected by a common theme and musical style. And there was almost no smell of heavy rock there. mid 1989 years, when the rock movement in the country gained the greatest momentum, it became clear that the material was irrelevant. Under the pressure of the general hard rock euphoria, and perhaps Kirichenko, who grew bolder and felt the decisive moment, “Forpost” of the 1988 model fell! New songs — new like-minded people. The sound has completely changed — powerful, and at times very lyrical vocals, almost perfect dynamics of drums and bass, and a hard sound of the lead guitar, alternating with fast-paced organ passages. This is the golden age of Outpost, although not for long. A year later, secretly from most of his colleagues, Alexander overcame the qualifying rounds and went to the final, becoming the winner of the All-Union competition for young pop singers «Jurmala-9one».
— In 1991, the participants were not selected by republican artistic councils, as in previous years, but directly by Moscow. Anyone could send their phonograms directly, — Alexander recalls. — I did not have a pop repertoire, and I chose the songs «easier» from the repertoire of «Outpost». After the Moscow semi-finals, the Baltic states, which were at war with the allied authorities, refused to host the finalists of the competition. The final was moved to the Crimea and renamed «Moscow — Yalta — Transit». Murat Nasyrov took the Grand Prix, and Alena Ivantsova, Marina Khlebnikova, Sveta Nazarenko (now known as Aya, the frontwoman of Goroda 312) became laureates with me. The TV version aired three times! All-Union fame has come! In a rock club, they rotted me — they branded me a major and a traitor to the ideals of rock. As a pop artist, I became in demand. nine0003
Kirichenko’s most famous hits in the pop genre were Steps, Rolls and Rolls and Where to Find You. In addition, in the second half of the 90s, Alexander was a popular and sought-after radio and TV presenter.
– I am still a multi-machine operator, but already in a managerial position. And although retirement is still far away, I consider the stage to be the destiny of the young.
«101»
Never before has a domestic boy band been so western. 101 was the first pop group to be modeled after American and European boy bands. And apparently, the project was more than a success. To this day, the group keeps the brand and is one of the most popular in Kazakhstan. nine0003
And its creator, Erik Tastembekov, considers «101» his most important success. It all started in 2001, when Tastembekov was engaged in the Tengri group. But, apparently, realizing that the 101 group is more promising, he began to pay more attention to the newly formed boy band. And, I must say, he did not lose — «101» will give him a reason for pride more than once.
Their first clip «Tears» was quite modest and achieved «showiness» through a collage with world news releases about the events of September 11th. True, each time the quality of the clips got better and better, and it was this group that first began to make high demands on the quality of the clips. nine0003
— Today, few people remember that initially there were 6 people in the «101» group. Four sang, two mostly danced,” recalls Eric Tastembekov. — But over time, we realized that we need to move away from the composition, which is more like an amateur team. We parted with those guys kindly, without scandals. And in 2003, the group remained in the composition, which works to this day. And apparently it was the right decision. We successfully performed in Jurmala, the guys even made it to the finals of the Song of the Year in Moscow, and Vanya Breusov participated in the fourth Star Factory the following year. nine0003
Perhaps no one has achieved such great success before «101». And they never had problems with hits: “A Tale Called Love”, California Dreaming, “Me Plus You”, “Heart at Gunpoint”, “You Don’t Love Me”, and many others. etc. It is worth saying that few of those who started in the late 90s — early 2000s have remained in demand in our time.
Sitora
The name of Sitora Nazarova sounded back in the early 90s at the memorable Asia Dauysy festival, where she performed with her brother Parviz, then also a beginner singer. At first, they were announced simply as Parviz and Sitora Nazarovs, so they were initially perceived as spouses. It came to oddities: the young fans of Parviz saw a rival in Sitor. Only after some time it became clear that Parviz and Sitora are brother and sister. In fact, Sitora remained in the shadow of his more fortunate brother for a long time. Solo songs did not bring her success. This continued until 2000, when Sitora performed her famous «Talk to Me». nine0003
The gentle lingering song captivated everyone, especially the male audience. Oriental flavor, chaste eroticism turned out to be a very spicy cocktail on the Kazakh stage. The audience was waiting for new hits, but did not wait. After some time, Sitora devoted herself to her family, although she continued to perform on stage both solo and in the company of her brother. But none of her new songs reached the success of «Talk to Me».
«All Let»
The project of Marlen Karabas (Nurmagambetov) can be considered one of the most successful boy bands in the history of our show business. The image of the guys from the neighboring yard, surprisingly, at 90-s turned out to be out of place — everyone tried as much as possible to join the world concepts of style. Only in 2000, the All Let’s project filled this niche by releasing its first video, Wait, which was presented two years later under the Kazakh version of Kut Meni. But as it often happens on our stage, our producers were looking for inspiration in creating new teams on the Russian stage. So “All Let” at the beginning of the 2000s was not compared only by the lazy with “Disco Crash”. However, not without reason, because the hooligan style was sometimes copied to the smallest detail. Recall, for example, the video “Once Upon a Time”, which is almost a carbon copy torn off from “You Hesitated” both in terms of the theme of the song and in terms of the style of the video. nine0003
Already in the middle of the 2000s, interest in them began to fade, although the guys tried to change their image to a more romantic one. For almost five years, from 2007 to 2012, the group de facto ceased to exist. Only last year the team made a comeback, recording a duet with singer Mika and expressing a desire to break into the Russian musical Olympus. The soloist of the group Shukhrat Umarov then said:
— I think that in Russia there is now a demand for new names. And we have every chance to light up on the Russian stage. At the same time, today it is absolutely not necessary to move there. The example of Ukrainian performers proves this. nine0003
Noel Shayakhmetov, a well-known music critic and general director of Radio NS, believes that over the past decades, Kazakhstani pop music has evolved from a “talent fair” to a “vanity fair ”:
– I can say that our The stage was more likely in the 70s, 80s. If earlier artists made good money, because they worked a lot, touring in the provinces, remote villages to live accompaniment, now they often earn a lot simply due to show-offs. Our old artists worked hard, and for this they received titles. And today, almost children can become honored artists or honored figures. And it is also not clear for what merits. nine0003
In general, the Kazakh stage in its current form is a classic amateur performance. But if earlier good artists came out of amateur performances, now they are doing so well, and there are no incentives to grow professionally. It is enough to record a song, shoot a video clip, give a reporting concert in the Palace of the Republic — and you can go “scratch through the provinces”.
At the same time, there are vivid examples of teams that started with amateur performances, which can give odds to professionals as well. For example, JCS, let them rarely write songs today. AT 9A good team was ABK, which for many was a model of professionalism. Yerlan, Medeu, and Kydyrali united in a group, already being great professionals, and then one by one, none of them disappeared and achieved great success in their field.
Of course, there are professionals who are worth their weight in gold today: Renat Gaisin, Erkesh Shakeev, Kuat Shildebaev, Viktor Khomenkov, Batyrkhan Shukenov.
In general, there are a large number of good jazz musicians in Kazakhstan, but, alas, they often remain unknown to the general public, since the way to television and radio is ordered to them due to their «non-format». At the same time, I’m often asked to play songs on the radio with the explanation, «I’ve already written 100 songs.» I can already imagine the quality of these so-called songs. Alas, there are more and more of them. nine0003
Of course, there are still mastodons, but the overall picture is very depressing. Unfortunately, we have lost our stage and acquired amateur performances instead.
To be continued. Stay with us.
