Description

For thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans, the indigenous people of the Canary Islands were the Guaches. The Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians visited here, but did not begin to populate the island. Like the Arabs who found them in the 12th century. The Spaniards, Portuguese and French for almost the entire 15th century shared El Hierro not only among themselves, but also with local residents who did not want to surrender to the Europeans without a fight. The Bimbachi, the Guaches of El Yera, were not completely exterminated during colonization, and today traces of them can be found throughout the island. The culture of the indigenous population was very primitive and did not step too far beyond the achievements of the Stone Age. Here they did not know metals, they walked in skins, ate simple food and lived according to the precepts of their ancestors. nine0003

… Open

Despite the low level of development, bimbachi had their own information transmission system, albeit incredibly primitive. Now all the descendants of the indigenous population of the island have long been assimilated and lost among Europeans and South Americans, but you can see confirmation of the existence of fine symbolic art among the ancient inhabitants of El Hierro. In the southwest of La Frontera, in the town of Hulan, there is a cave covered with petroglyphs. Here, many centuries ago, there was an old and rather large settlement of bimbachi. Traces of primitive stone buildings are found throughout El Hierro, so sometimes an interesting structure can be found just by walking through the forest. nine0003

You can purposefully go to Huaklos, where there are several ruins of ancient stone buildings at once. In addition to the traces of bimbachi, two hundred meters from the settlement there is a rather interesting ethnographic museum. Here are collected a dozen different dwellings and outbuildings of the island from different eras, from a primitive camp in a lava tube to a small house made of pieces of lava. Inside you can see the restored interiors of kitchens and rooms, listen to how they lived, what they celebrated and how the ancestors of modern islanders had fun. The ticket price includes the services of a guide. The tour is mostly in Spanish, but a lot of information is provided in English. There is also a langetarium where you can learn about the life cycle of the unique El Hierro giant lizards. Copyright www.orangesmile.com

El Hierro is a fairly small island. Here, as in the rest of the archipelago, you can find quite cheap clothes and shoes from the world’s leading brands, largely due to the absence of customs … Open

On the territory of the museum there is also a rather unusual cave, created entirely under the action of lava gases. For many centuries, Europeans have been sure that El Hierro is the extreme point of the world. Actually, only the discoveries of Columbus could convince them. But, nevertheless, there is still an interesting object on the island, reminiscent of those times when there was no longer any land beyond the Canary Islands on all maps. The fact is that the zero meridian used to pass through the territory of the island, and here you can see a plaque testifying to this on the westernmost lighthouse in Spain, which can be found on Cape Orchilla. nine0003

On the territory of the island, in general, there are quite a lot of interesting objects shrouded in myths and legends. For example, it is believed that the mythical Gareo tree still grows in the forests here, whose branches supplied the islanders with water for many years. Alas, with the advent of the Spaniards, the tree lost its mystical properties and is now lost among other plants. Some divers are still searching the coastal waters for the island of St. Brand, which disappears and reappears in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and is full of pirate treasures. However, if the disappearing treasure island is a beautiful legend, then the reality of a large number of frigates and galleons in the waters of El Hierro is beyond doubt. nine0003

El Hierro can be safely called the most unique island of the Canary archipelago. Among its main features is its miniature size, which does not detract from the dignity of this amazing … Open

Be sure to stroll along the streets of Velverde. The city itself was built in the 15th century, and since then many old buildings have been preserved here from those that survived a massive fire in 1899. For example, on the streets of the capital, you can see the beautiful town hall in the traditional Canarian style and visit the church of Santa Maria de la Concepcio. The skete of the Holy Virgin is also interesting. In the town of El Pinar, you can look at the life and culture of the local population. Almost nothing has changed here in the last couple of centuries. And La Estigue you can visit the Research Institute of Volcanology, where you will be told quite a lot of interesting things about volcanic eruptions and the measures that scientists are taking to predict such cataclysms and minimize their consequences. nine0003

Iconic cultural sites in Spain

In Valencia, travelers can visit the whole «City of Arts and Sciences» — this is the name of the architectural complex, located at the bottom of a drained river. It includes a science museum, an opera house and a stage for performances, a planetarium, an oceanographic park. The Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia has one of the richest collections of paintings in the whole country. Like most of the iconic museums in Spain, it is located in an old building with very beautiful architecture. One of the most famous paintings in the collection is John the Baptist by El Greco. It is in Valencia, in the Gothic cathedral, that the cup is kept, which is officially recognized by the Catholic Church as the Holy Grail.
