PUERTO RICO PROVIDES TWO-WEEK TRIPS SO YOU CAN WORK FROM THE ISLAND AND ENJOY ITS BEACHES, MOUNTAINS AND RAINFORD

As more companies embrace the work-from-home trend, many people are taking their home offices on the road. In fact, 74% of Americans said they think about work, according to data from Harris Poll last month.

Now, Discover Puerto Rico — The Island Tourism Board — is giving six Americans the opportunity to do so in two weeks — for free. The «Work in Full Color» initiative, which encourages WFH employees to change their desks to one closer to the turquoise waves of Puerto Rico, aims to show how easy it is to work from within the US.

After all, no passports are required and the island is in the same time zone as the East Coast for half a year (and only an hour ahead the rest of the year). Plus, US visitors won’t have to worry about currency conversions and can look forward to familiar amenities including Uber Eats, Walgreens, CVS, and Airbnb (which has its own Puerto Rico microsite).

Even with 31 ISPs and three 5G networks, it’s easy to video conference or stay connected with your current data plan.

To showcase all of these benefits, six winners will be offered jobs across the island, including a floating villa off Fajardo, an apartment in Old San Juan, a luxury oceanfront suite in Copamarina Beach Resort and Spa, and a three bedroom Palmas del Mar condominium.

“We hope travelers find out how easy and convenient it is to work remotely from Puerto Rico as they don’t need visas, passports or insurance certificates to work on the island for long periods of time,” said Marketing Director of Puerto Rico. Rico. Leah Chandler Tells Travel + leisure . “In addition, we aim to introduce visitors to the variety of activities and experiences available throughout Puerto Rico for them to enjoy after hours.”

She adds that her favorite moments of working on the island are «being surrounded by friendly locals and learning about the diverse culture, especially the amazing gastronomy.» Some local attractions include dining at the chic outdoor food court. Lot 23 or take an eco-tour at Local Guest, which has everything from cave adventures and pottery classes to volunteer tours that help build homes damaged by Hurricane Maria or work on a community garden.

To enter, visit discoverpuertorico.com/deskover and describe what you could accomplish with two weeks on the island. Winners will receive an economy round trip ticket, 14 nights accommodation and Wi-Fi throughout their stay. All applications must be received by May 13, 2021.

Chandler also says Puerto Rico’s natural wonders add to the attraction, especially after a year of being cooped up at home. “Proximity to so many unique landscapes and natural resources is also incredible,” she says. «Being able to visit the beach, the mountains or the rainforest in one weekend is truly a rarity and a specialty.»

It’s worth noting that the CDC currently has Puerto Rico on a «Very High COVID-19 Level 4» Notice, but says those who are fully vaccinated can travel within the US. must receive a negative molecular PCR test less than 72 hours prior to travel or fined $300 in addition to taking another test within 48 hours of arrival. There is also a curfew on the island from 22:00. and 5 am. Bars are closed, but restaurants, pools and museums are open at 30%.

Powerful hurricane sweeps through Puerto Rico, shutting down entire country

On Sunday, Hurricane Fiona left Puerto Rico without power, caused catastrophic floods and landslides on the island, and then spread towards the Dominican Republic.

This was reported by Reuters, Ukrinform reports.

It is noted that the current hurricane, which struck Puerto Rico five years after Hurricane Maria devastated the island, ripped asphalt from roads, blew away a large road bridge, flooded cars, and caused rainfall to some rivers rose by 6 meters in just a few hours.

— Reuters (@Reuters) September 19, 2022

«It was a disaster,» Puerto Rico Governor Pedro Pierluisi said at a news conference in the capital, San Juan.

The epicenter of the hurricane hit the southwest coast of Puerto Rico near Punta Tocon with maximum winds of about 140 kilometers per hour, which exceeded the threshold for a Category 1 hurricane, the National Hurricane Watch Center said.

Power to the island of 3.3 million people was completely cut off due to the hurricane, LUMA Energy, the island’s network operator, said.

LUMA Energy spokesman Abner Gomes said the entire electrical system has been shut down to protect its infrastructure. Power is being restored in some places, with priority being given to hospitals and other critical public services, he said.

Heavy rainfall and mudslides are also forecast in the Dominican Republic as the storm moves northwest and the Turks and Caicos Islands are likely to experience tropical storm effects on Tuesday, the NHC said.

By the evening of the week, humanitarian agencies in the Dominican Republic began evacuating residents from high-risk areas in the east of the country. President Luis Abinader has postponed a trip to New York to attend the UN General Assembly, and the start of the Dominican school year has been moved to Wednesday from Monday.

One Fiona-related death has now been reported on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. Authorities said they identified the deceased man on Saturday after his house was swept away by flooding. France has declared Guadeloupe a disaster area.

As Ukrinform reported, in June a powerful hurricane swept through the Netherlands, damaging 150 houses.
