Supporting The Leaders of Tomorrow
There is no doubt — Our youth is our future! In a recent survey of HPRSD members, it was unanimous the sentiments that, as an organization, we should develop programs to foster the development of our youth within the context of our Puerto Rican heritage and customs.
The support from our members to get involved has been tremendous, including those that have children, grandchildren, kids in high school and college, or young adults starting their careers.

Doña Casilda Pagan Scholarship
Investing in Our Youth’s Future
Important Dates:
The House of Puerto Rico San Diego sponsors the Casilda Pagán Educational/ Vocational Scholarship.
This scholarship is being offered to high school seniors/ graduates or college/post-graduate students. The applicant must be a current active member of the House of Puerto Rico San Diego or a San Diego County resident of Puerto Rican descent, who has contributed at least 10 hours of community service through HPRSD within the last year. If you need to complete your volunteer hours please contact Joe Carballo at [email protected] With this award, we hope to assist youth or adults in the attainment of their educational and professional goals.
Scholarships are awarded yearly. Interested applicants should submit the following information:

Personal Essay (250 word minimum) including the following information:

Your educational /vocational goals

Your financial needs

Describe how you will contribute community service through the House of Puerto Rico.

Describe Prior History of community service

Proof of current enrollment in an educational or vocational institution

Contemporary art lovers Cesar and Mima Reyes live in the largest piece of their collection, a house built by artist Jorge Pardo.

Psychiatrist Cesar Reyes and his wife Mima have long collected contemporary art. Having bought a plot in the Puerto Rican town of Naguabo, they decided to commission the project of the house not from an architect, but to their friend, conceptual artist Jorge Pardo. Pardo is the author of large-scale spatial installations, and the Reyess were captured by the idea to settle in one of them. Pardo flew from Los Angeles to Naguabo to inspect the site. The first sketches he made seemed to the owners too complicated. But then Cesar visited the artist’s house in California, and he liked it at first sight: a laconic pine and glass box with bright color accents in the interior. Simplicity appealed to Reyes, which was exactly what he and Mima wanted in their home. nine0003

A line of work was found and a six-year collaboration began. The sketches of Pardo Cesar himself processed on a computer. “Jorge has an amazing architectural sense, his ability to accurately perceive space is comparable to absolute musical pitch,” he says.

The house designed by Pardo is a simple construction of two intersecting concrete volumes. The orientation of the windows to the mountains and the sea allows you to use all the advantages of the site. On the terrace facing the sea, a through grate made of steel rings was placed — it “lets in” the sea breeze inside and provides natural ventilation, which is simply necessary in the hot climate of Puerto Rico. In addition, the grate casts cheerful polka-dot shadows on the floor.
The kitchen is fitted with colorful laminate panels.

The grille is bright red, and it’s not the only color in the house. The pool is tiled in yellow and red, the floors in the rooms are blue. The same floor everywhere seems either greenish or purple — it reflects the colored elements of the interior. The main room in the house is the red-orange kitchen. It is hosted by Mima, a passionate cook.

Art objects and designer furniture are deliberately casually placed, some of the paintings are simply leaning against the walls.
Naturalness, harmony of color and volumes are the main features of the house.
The master bedroom has a peasant-style canopy bed. On the walls are paintings by Jorge Pardo.

And this is where the hand of the artist who created it is felt. “I confess, I was afraid that the project would quarrel us,” Cesar Reyes laughs. “It turned out the opposite, Jorge and I became friends even more.” nine0003
