Come to the island and take a walk through evergreen forests and picturesque levadas. See rugged volcanic rocks and swim in natural lava pools or in the open ocean. Taste unfamiliar paradise fruits and study outlandish flowers and trees.
Madeira will always find something to surprise you with!
Seixal, Madeira Island
Madeira, surrounded by the blue waters of the Atlantic, is located southwest of mainland Portugal. The island is magnificent all year round. The climate here is mild, thanks to the Gulf Stream: there is no debilitating heat, no cold, no intrusive prolonged rains. The area of Madeira is 785 km², one fifth of the territory is covered with forests.
The island is famous for its resorts, cozy hotels, variety of landscapes — from eucalyptus groves and laurel forests to wild rocks and secret caves. There are romantic fishing villages, ancient temples, luxurious palaces.
Madeira open in 2022?
Yes, open to everyone — this is official information.
What are the entry requirements for Madeira?
Travel to Madeira does not require PCR tests, certificates or application form. All entry restrictions have been lifted.
When to go to Madeira?
San Vicente District
From April to October. To appreciate the magnificence of blooming Madeira, you need to go in the spring, when the whole of Funchal, the island capital, becomes a fabulous garden. In April, the grand festival Festa da Flor opens.
The high tourist season starts from May and continues until October. Swimming is most comfortable in August-September, although the water remains relatively warm throughout the winter. The low season lasts from November to the end of March, with the exception of the Christmas and New Year holidays, when enchanting festivals take place.
Prices in hotels are reduced during the off-season; it rains, but not too much. Cool for swimming, but you can take a dip in the lava bath, go surfing, go fishing or just admire the unique nature of Madeira.
Last time we were in October. The weather was about 25, sometimes overcast and rainy, less than a quarter of the days.
Madeira attractions
Where to swim in Madeira?
Praia do Garajau
It makes no sense to go to Madeira just for the sake of a beach holiday. But being on an island in the middle of the ocean and not swimming is also not an option!
However, you need to understand that since the island is of volcanic origin, it means that frozen lava will be waiting for you on the coast. Madeira has mostly rocky beaches, less often beaches with volcanic black sand with pebbles.
You will not find wide, luxurious sandy beaches in Madeira. On the whole island there are only 4 sandy beaches without stones, and those are small: 2 beaches with imported yellow sand and a couple of beaches with native black.
But that doesn’t mean there aren’t enough places to swim in Madeira. Bathing complexes with sea water are very common here. These are either natural baths, fenced from the waves, or ordinary outdoor pools with sea water.
Talking about the best places to swim in Madeira:
Madeira Beaches
- Praia da Prainha is the only natural sandy beach in Madeira.
- Praia do Porto do Seixal is a small artificial black sand beach located on the north coast of the island.
- Praia da Calheta is an artificial marina with imported yellow sand in the southwest of the island.
- Praia de Machico — the second beach with golden African sand.
- Praia da Alagoa is a black sand and pebble beach in the northeast of Madeira.
- Praia Formosa — a volcanic beach in Funchal, pebbly on one side and sandy on the other.
- Praia do Garajau — a nice large pebble beach a little east of Funchal.
- Praia da Foz da Ribeira do Faial is a northeast pebbly beach in the picturesque valley of the Ribeira do Faial.
Bathing complexes in Madeira
- Piscinas Naturais do Porto Moniz — natural pools in Porto Moniz, formed by volcanic lava (there are free and paid).
- Complexo Balnear do Lido — a complex of ordinary pools with sea water and direct descent into the ocean in the capital of Madeira — Funchal (paid).
- Complexo Balnear Doca do Cavacas — a small complex with a natural volcanic pool and direct access to the ocean in Funchal (paid).
- Complexo Balnear da Ponta Gorda is one of the most popular bathing complexes in Funchal (paid).
Porto Santo Island
Porto Santo Island Sandy Beach
The southeast coast of the neighboring island of Porto Santo is a continuous golden sandy beach stretching over 9km. There is a well-equipped recreation area near the only city — Vila Baleira, but you can swim along the entire coast: the water is always warm, the descent is gentle.
Check out our island guide. In it you will find a detailed map, how to get there and what to see.
We spent several days on the island, walked around the entire 9 km long beach. Read the details in our report.
Funchal
City Hall
The capital of the island is Funchal, a city on the southern tip of Madeira. It looks unusually bright and beautiful. Along the streets, paved with black volcanic stone, there are snow-white houses with red roofs. In the water area of the port yachts drift, cruise liners stand. Mountains covered with «malachite» forests approach the city.
Sights of the capital — the Cathedral, the Santa Clara Monastery, the botanical garden and the gardens of the Monte Palace, the Lavradoresh market, Blandy’s wine cellars, numerous museums.
Funchal Monte Cable Car
Funchal Cable Car
Funchal’s sunny promenade makes it easy and quick to climb up to the clouds and enjoy the picturesque panoramic views of the capital and the south coast of the island. To do this, take a ride on the Funchal-Monte cable car.
Madeira Botanical Garden
Madeira Ing. Rui Botanical Garden
The botanical garden was founded in 1881 and today it covers an area of 80,000 m² on a mountainside above Funchal. Stunning flower beds are laid out here, figured hedges, green sculptures are planted. Plants are grouped into thematic collections.
Monte Tropical Garden
Monte Palace and Tropical Garden (photo: edalger)
Monte Tropical Garden is located on the summit of the same name. You can get there by the Funchal-Monte funicular. The Jardim Tropical Monte garden is laid out around the Monte Palace. Huge tree ferns grow here. In total, more than 100 thousand exotic plants have been collected, artificial ponds, streams and bridges have been created, and original sculptural installations have been installed. Swans and peacocks live near the reservoirs, parrots and canaries fly.
Cabo Girao 9 observation deck0275 Cabo Girão Lookout
Cabo Girão (586 m) is located two kilometers west of Funchal. There is a viewing terrace built on a suspended platform made of tempered glass. It offers stunning views of the endless ocean, small cultivated land at the foot of the cliff, as well as a panoramic view of the capital of Madeira.
Route to the top of Pico Ruivo
Walk to Pico Ruivo
Pico Ruivo is the highest point in Madeira, its height is 1862 meters. From the top, beautiful panoramic landscapes open up: green gorges, rugged mountain peaks and the endless blue of the ocean.
Pico Ruivo is not accessible by car, only walking paths lead to it. There is a very beautiful route leading from the top of Arieiro (1818 m) to the peak of Ruivo (1862 m), but it is quite difficult — Vereda do Areeiro — Pico Ruivo (PR1). I suggest an easy walk to Pico Ruivo along the PR1. 2 route.
Levada walk – Route 25 waterfalls
Levada on the way to the waterfalls
One of the main tourist activities in Madeira are the levada walks. Levada is a type of irrigation canal. The total length of the levadas of Madeira exceeds 2000 km. Irrigation channels half a meter wide were built to grow reeds to bring water from the northern mountainous areas of the island to the arid southern lands.
Now along the levadas there are hiking trails with a small difference in heights and safety ropes in difficult areas. The most popular levada is 25 waterfalls. The route is laid through the tropical forest, and waterfalls await travelers at the end.
There are 2 track options:
- Calheta – Levada das 25 Fontes e Risco – easy route. The length is 9.9 km, the height difference is 100 m. It passes through a dark, wet tunnel. If you choose this route, don’t forget to bring a flashlight.
- Rabaçal — Levada das 25 Fontes e Risco (PR6) — Medium route.
Length — 11 km, elevation difference — 350 m. We chose this route — more difficult and longer.
Porto Moniz natural pools
Raging ocean
In the small town of Porto Moniz, in the northwest of Madeira, there are unique natural lava pools with sea water. The pools were created by nature itself — the lava flows that came to the surface were cooled by the Atlantic Ocean and turned into natural backwaters. For a more comfortable bathing, the locals only had to level the bottom and build concrete bridges, stairs and sunbathing areas around.
Sao Vicente Lookout
São Vicente Lookout
In the northern part of the island, near the town of Sao Vicente, there is a very beautiful and quiet place — the Chapel of Our Lady of Fatima (Capela de Nossa Senhora de Fátima). It adorns the top of the Pico da Cova (Pico da Cova), which offers charming landscapes of the mountains and the Sao Vicente valley.
The 14 meter chapel-tower was erected in 1948, after the end of the Second World War. On each of the four facades of the tower there are large clocks, but for some reason, they all show different times.
Cape San Lorenzo
Cape São Lourenço, Madeira
Cape San Lorenzo (Ponta de São Lourenço) is the easternmost point of the island and is very different from the rest of Madeira. Here the vegetation is low, there are no trees at all. In 1982, the peninsula was declared a nature reserve in order to preserve its fauna, flora and geological heritage.
Desert colorful rocks blend fantastically with the blue waters of the Atlantic. Not surprisingly, the Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço (PR8) route is one of the most popular on the island.
Prainha Beach
Prainha — Madeira’s only natural sandy beach
In the Ponta de São Lourenço Natural Reserve, there is a small sandy beach of natural origin — Prainha Beach. It has black volcanic sand mixed with white. The entrance to the water is quite sharp, but the water is very clean.
Garajau beach
Road to Garajao beach
Praia do Garajau is a nice large pebbly beach a little east of Funchal. The beach is located on the territory of the natural reserve Reserva Natural Parcial do Garajau. Here, clear blue water, rich marine life, and therefore, it is appreciated by diving enthusiasts. Directly above the beach there is an observation deck with a majestic concrete statue of Jesus Christ.
Calheta Beach
Praia da Calheta
Praia da Calheta is an artificial marina, a popular southwestern beach of Madeira. It is divided into two opposite sandy strips, covered from the waves by concrete blocks. The beach is popular with locals and tourists and is considered one of the best in Madeira.
Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse
Ponta Vija Rock
At the extreme western point of the island, a small Ponta do Pargo lighthouse flaunts — an amazing place to spend the sunset. Lighthouse on a huge cape. A tunnel leads to it. You dive into it by car, and you emerge near the lighthouse overlooking the ocean.
Madeira Theme Park
Palheiros miniature houses
In the north-east of the island, on the outskirts of the town of Santana, a cozy exhibition and entertainment space has been built — this is the Madeira Theme Park (Parque Tematico da Madeira). Here you can learn about local crafts, the history of the discovery of the archipelago, the unique nature of the island, the «architecture» and the customs of the inhabitants of Santana County.
It should be noted that the traditional houses of the city of Santana in the Madeira Theme Park are presented in miniature form. Here are the coordinates of the site with real houses.
Events, celebrations, events
In mid-February, the traditional Madeira Carnival (Carnaval da Madeira) takes place: every year a new «historical» theme is approved. They start preparing for the event in advance, and on holidays the streets are filled with costumed processions. Carnival captures not only Funchal, but also all island villages.
In April, the capital is full of flowers – the Festival of Flowers (Festa da Flor) takes place: on the main street of Funchal, residents build a “wall of hope” out of flowers.
In June, a series of cultural exhibitions, performances, concerts takes place — the Atlantic Festival (Festival do Atlântico).
August marks the stage of motor racing — Madeira Rally (Rali Vinho Madeira).
The Grape Harvest Festival is held in September. During the Madeira Wine Festival (Festa do Vinho Madeira) there is a parade, concerts and other entertainment.
New Year’s Eve (Fim de Ano): Throughout December and January, a variety of cultural events are held with music, performances and fun. A fireworks festival is taking place: the Bay of Funchal, the entire city and the surrounding slopes from the beginning of December to January 6 are lit with hundreds of thousands of lights. The world’s best fireworks masters are preparing New Year’s fireworks. The Maderians arrange the most grandiose fireworks on New Year’s Eve (December 31).

Historians believe that the islands of the archipelago were known to the ancient Romans, but officially Madeira was discovered by Portuguese navigators João Zarco and Tristan Teixeira in 1419. Travelers admired the lush vegetation, they called the island Madeira — «wooded». Having settled here, Juan Gonçalves Zarco led the colonization of the territory and developed agriculture. Until the 18th century, sugar was the main source of income for the Maderians, when competitors appeared, winemaking became the most important industry. In the 19th century, Madeira became famous as a famous European resort.

In restaurants, the tortilla is usually served warm, sprinkled with garlic butter and herbs.
