Excursion to the island of Gran Canaria — Alexander Alexandrov
Individual excursion to the island of Gran Canaria from Tenerife will allow you to visit the third largest Canary Island, accompanied by a professional guide. The nature of the island is so rich that during the trip you can visit 14 climatic zones at once. Magnificent beaches, laurel forests, orchards, impregnable rocks, volcano craters, mountain valleys and gorges, and even a real desert await you!
Gran Canaria Coastline
Excursion to the island of Gran Canaria will begin with a trip on a comfortable ferry, you will see luxurious resorts with yacht ports, traditional Canarian villages, cave settlements of aborigines, amazing towns with colonial buildings. You can swim on one of the best beaches in Spain, ride camels, visit the botanical garden, water park, dolphinarium, wild west and amusement parks, and even dive to the ocean floor in a real submarine.
Journey through a «continent in miniature»
The island of Gran Canaria bears the name of «a miniature continent» because of its diverse flora and fauna. Mountains dominate in its central part, and in the south, what most travelers from all over the world seek here are the beaches of Gran Canaria. One of the best is the Maspalomas beach — many kilometers wide strip of golden sand brought here from the Sahara. Located in a picturesque bay, it is divided into several resorts: party Playa del Inglés, always lively and youthful Puerto Rico, respectable Meloneras with luxurious villas.
The beaches of Gran Canaria
An excursion to the island of Gran Canaria will take us to the beach of «Lovers» with the Blue Flag of purity — white sand, a secluded bay and azure water set you in a romantic mood. Gran Canaria also has Las Canteras beach, one of the five best beaches in Spain. On an individual excursion, you can choose which of them you will enjoy the warm waters of the Atlantic. Or maybe you want to visit all of them?
Sand dunes
Just behind the beaches of Maspalomas, another natural wonder begins — colorful sand dunes, just like in a real desert: photographs against their background are really impressive. However, Gran Canaria should not be considered deserted: visit the “cactus paradise”, where more than 1200 species of these thorny plants grow from all over the world. Take a walk in the Canary Botanical Garden, where all the plants of Macronesia and the Canary Islands are collected, many of which can no longer be found in the wild.
Gran Canaria Botanical Garden
After exploring the beaches, the desert and the flora, all that remains is to climb the mountains. At an altitude of 1813 meters, it is worth noting near the visiting card of the island — the eighty-meter basalt monolith Roque Nublo, which was considered sacred by the natives. And from the observation deck of the highest point of Gran Canaria, Mount Pico de las Nieves, a bewitching panorama opens: you can even see the island of Tenerife with the peak of the Teide volcano.
Pico de las Nieves
Well, how can you do without volcanoes in the Canary Islands? An amazing sight awaits you at the grandiose Caldera de Bandama crater, which is 200 meters deep: you can appreciate its scale from inside or from the Pico de Bandama observation deck.
Caldera de Bandama
Historical trip to Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria’s man-made sights are no less interesting. In the settlement of Artenara, caves have been preserved, in which, before colonization, the ancient Guanches lived — tribes that used stone tools and did not know navigation. In the caves where they built their dwellings, archaeologists found household items and tools, as well as petroglyphs and rock paintings, which you will see on the tour. It is amazing that the locals still use these caves for living today: you can see the inhabited cave houses and the cave church of La Ermita de la Cuevita.
Church of La Ermita de la Cuevita
Most of the towns and villages that exist today were organized by settlers, thanks to which Gran Canaria is famous for its many monuments of colonial architecture. So, in the town of Aguimes, medieval buildings have been preserved, as well as terracotta and snow-white traditional Canarian houses. The peaceful Plaza del Rosario is home to the Church of San Sebastian, the finest example of neoclassical architecture in the archipelago. You should definitely visit the town of Fataga, whose history goes back more than 2,000 years. It also sells the most unusual souvenirs in Gran Canaria: you will find out which ones during the tour. By the way, you can get to the village by camel, overcoming the oases in Arteara-Barranda.
It is impossible not to mention the city of Arucas, which became famous for two things. Firstly, here is the largest distillery in the Canary Islands, which produces Destilerías Arehucas rum. Here you can not only get acquainted with all the details of production, but also taste a pirate drink. The second attraction of Arucas is the Church of San Juan Bautista, with its 60-meter spire soaring into the sky. Built in neo-gothic style, it contrasts sharply with the cheerful Canarian architecture, which makes it look even more majestic.
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
The city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the second capital of the archipelago, which has equal rights with Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is also worth a visit. It is worth starting the tour from the oldest quarters of Triana and Vegueta, founded back in the 15th century, where the main attractions of Gran Canaria are located. In the capital, it is also worth visiting the most luxurious area of the city, Ciudad Jardin, a business district with modern buildings and a seaport. Fans of shopping will also have something to profit from: for color, go to the oldest city market, Mercado de Vegueta, and for branded items at ridiculous prices, go to El Corte Ingles, the largest shopping center in Gran Canaria.
To the island of Gran Canaria with children: the best things to do
Holidays to Gran Canaria with children will be no less interesting. Adults and kids alike enjoy visiting Palmitos Park, which is home to over 200 species of birds, including hummingbirds and flamingos. The park has a garden of cacti and orchids, a butterfly pavilion and an aquarium, and dolphins are responsible for the entertainment part, the show of which takes place several times a day.
Holiday World
Next in line is the largest theme park in the Canary Islands, Holiday World, which has everything a child’s heart desires: a huge Ferris wheel, electric cars and roller coasters. The theme park of the Wild West Sioux City is also of interest, where you can watch shows of riders and cowboys, try on themed costumes, take pictures with buffaloes and horses.
Lovers of water activities will also find something to do during the excursion. If the beautiful beaches of Gran Canaria were not enough for you, feel free to go to the Maspalomas water park, which is open all year round and offers visitors 13 attractions. And not far from the beach of the same name, a real yellow submarine is moored, just like from the song by The Beatles. On it you can dive to the bottom of the Atlantic to get to know its inhabitants better.
The advantage of an individual excursion to the island of Gran Canaria from Tenerife is that you can choose to visit only those places that you like. We will prepare an individual itinerary for you and tell you everything about the history, culture, traditions and legends of the islands so that your holiday in the Canary Islands becomes even brighter and richer.

Where to go for a beach holiday in winter? The Canaries are relatively close, which means you can save on the road. But what about the temperature at this time of the year, can unlucky tourists freeze on a winter beach?! I will share my personal experience.
Gran Canaria is the third largest island in the Canaries. Only two hundred kilometers separate this overseas possession of Spain from the African continent. The land is washed by a warm current, so you can swim here even in winter, unlike the more famous Tenerife. In any case, this is the common opinion of experienced travelers, to which I listened when planning a trip. I’ll make a reservation right away that in different parts of Gran Canaria the conditions for swimming are somewhat different. The southwestern side is considered the warmest, covered from cold streams by mountain ranges. The north of the island, on the contrary, is a place where the temperature is several degrees lower than in the south.
The shape of the island resembles a circle. Moreover, closer to its center are mountain peaks, and along the edges — numerous beaches.
At the northern tip of Gran Canaria is the provincial capital, Las Palmas, a city of half a million.
There is a small historical center and residential areas with similar skyscrapers, many kilometers of ocean beaches and a large industrial port.
And most importantly — quite inexpensive hotels. Compared to other areas of the island, it is by far the most affordable place for tourists.
The northern outskirts of Las Palmas lie on a narrow isthmus. It takes 15 minutes to walk from the east coast to the west coast. All previous shots were taken from the direction of sunrise, and this is a large beach located to the west.
Same beach after sunset. Exhibition of sand figures
50 kilometers south of the capital of the island and we are in a real reserve for tourists — near the village of San Agustin.
There are almost no houses of local residents, but there are beach hotels and related infrastructure around. Moreover, hotels are much more expensive than in Las Palmas.
Descent to the beach. Gusts of wind interfere with calmly taking air baths, so sunbathers try to find shelter — it can be a stone block, an umbrella or a tent.
Dogs and nudists — persona non grata
South tip of the island — Maspalomas. This city includes the famous beach area of Playa del Inglés with its many hotels. Most vacationers here are Germans, British, Scandinavians, but there are relatively few Russians.
This windy promontory in the sea is located in the vicinity of Maspalomas.
Lighthouse
The famous dunes of Gran Canaria could be filmed here.
