City for pedestrians — fantasy?
City for pedestrians — fantasy?
All this has led to the gradual abandonment of personal vehicles in many cities around the world. The palm in this regard was taken by various European capitals. No wonder, because they were built long before the advent of cars, so their narrow streets are simply not adapted to withstand crazy car traffic. As a result, the machines began to fight. So, for example, in the near future, 24 streets of Madrid will be completely freed from cars. In the center, you can only ride bicycles or walk there, and this is not the limit, according to the Madrid authorities.

The situation is similar in Paris, where the central streets are also gradually freed from cars. A very bold experiment was implemented there: on some days the city center is completely inaccessible to private transport. And nothing, this practice appealed to the Parisians. In addition, countless bike paths and convenient sidewalks for pedestrians have been laid in the heart of France.
Hamburg can be called a city of pedestrians. A special «green network» has been created there. These are parks that are connected by a system of sidewalks and bike paths. As the locals say, it has become more convenient to move around the city.
nine0003
Well, for example, Copenhagen is not only a city of pedestrians, but also a city of cyclists. There, the problem of the dominance of motor vehicles was attended to 30 years ago and began to sharply limit the possibilities of motorists. As a result, almost half of the city’s population simply abandoned private cars and switched to bicycles: it’s more economical, more environmentally friendly, and healthier. Today, more than 300 kilometers of cycle paths have been laid in Copenhagen.
But these are all old cities, where you can only restrict traffic, and rebuilding them to meet high environmental standards will no longer work. Therefore, new real cities of pedestrians, fundamentally free from cars, are being actively built in the world. Their layout is such that from any place in 10-20 minutes it will be possible to get anywhere, pedaling or on foot.

Such a city is being built in China, it will be called the Great City and, according to the plan of the architects, will never know what the exhaust gases of a traffic jam are. The green city will become a real ecological Mecca of China. There, the issue of ecology is especially relevant.
A similar city of Masdar is being built near Abu Dhabi. It will also get rid of cars, and all energy will be based on natural sources: wind and sun. This is how you get an oasis in the desert.
nine0003
And finally, the city of pedestrians will soon appear in Puerto Rico, it is called San Juan. The government has invested a lot of money in rebuilding this city with above-average environmental standards. As they say in San Juan, the city will be a huge green park.
It should be noted that the experience of other states shows that the city of pedestrians is a reality, and the rejection of personal vehicles is not a tragedy if public transport, bike paths and sidewalks are well developed. In Russia, such principles are gradually being introduced. For example, in Tyumen, one can note the April and Ozhogino residential complexes, where the yard without cars program is being successfully implemented. A well-organized infrastructure and a network of special parking lots made it possible to ensure that the yards are completely free from gas contamination and roaring engines. And this is clean air and, most importantly, the health of residents.

Puerto Rico, Antilles — Around the World
I’m back. I was so rested that there was almost nothing to show at all — either rain, then dullness, then it was not interesting, then just laziness :-). In general, after a week of driving on the boring roads of America, in the Caribbean, I slept the whole next week. The only time I pulled myself together (meaning the camera in my hands) was in charming San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico.
By the way, there was confusion with these names. Originally when Columbus landed on the island in November 1493 years during their second trip to the shores of America, the Spaniards named the island of San Juan Bautista in honor of St. John the Baptist, and the administrative center of the island — the port-capital — Puerto Rico, which means «rich port». But then the cartographers mixed up the names, and so it has remained since that time: the island (and the freely associated state) is called Puerto Rico, and the capital of the island is San Juan.
The French, Dutch, British and other Europeans repeatedly tried to capture Puerto Rico, but to no avail — for four centuries Puerto Rico remained under the rule of the Spaniards. Only in 189In 8, during the Spanish-American War, Spain was forced to cede the island to the United States, and for 54 years Puerto Rico was under the military control of the United States. In 1952, Puerto Rico received its current status of an associated territory, which means that this territory is under the control of the United States (but is not an integral part of them), the effect on the territory of the US Constitution is limited; supreme power belongs to the US Congress, but the territory has its own system of self-government. nine0003
New areas of the city look quite modern
Construction is widespread, new houses are growing like mushrooms. By the way, there is a wonderful panoramic restaurant on the roof of the third building in the background. The main square, of course, is dedicated to Christopher Columbus
Further on are the perfectly preserved Spanish forts and fortresses that surround the city from all sides. nine0003
There is a cemetery next to the fortress
Very remarkable. I think it’s not bad at all to rest on a beautiful ocean shore
Near the sea and poor areas.
I liked how the locals paint the roofs there
In general, Puerto Ricans try to embellish and ennoble their houses, you can feel it at every step
Where there is enough money, there are even such sculptures. A great idea, by the way — old plush toys in whitewash on the wall, from afar it looks so cool in general
There are a lot of sculptures in the city. From traditional and monumental
To informal and unobtrusive
House numbers on the walls — in traditional Spanish style, with ceramic tiles
Here and there you can find real panel paintings
Everything shows that the locals love their city very much. In the New Year holidays, for lack of Christmas trees, all sorts of different bushes and trees are decorated
A very pleasant promenade in San Juan for walking. By the way, along the entire embankment (more than two kilometers) there is a free Wi-Fi zone
