where and what to see nearby

This early 20th century mansion is mentioned in one of the greatest novels of Puerto Rican literature. His real story is just as interesting.

At the beginning of the XVIII century, the Spanish government of Puerto Rico, in the hope of accelerating the development of the colony, began to offer preferences to foreigners who wanted to settle on the island and open their own business. Among those who came to start their own business were three brothers from the Basque region of Fuenterrabia, near the Spanish-French border. nine0003

The Peugeot brothers acquired over 480 hectares of land in the city of Moka and established a coffee plantation, known at the time as «Irurena» (translated from Bass as «Three Brothers»). They ran the business for several years using cheap slave labor. Then the caretaker Juan Labadie bought the coffee plantation. Labadi continued to grow the business with his new wife, freed slave Cornelia Pellot.

In 1893, after Labadie’s death, Pellot had the wooden plantation house demolished to make way for a new concrete building. It took 12 years to build a new mansion, and in 1905 it was completed. Its architectural design is based on the second-wave Baroque (or literally «Second Baroque Empire») style, a Caribbean version of the French castle that was popular in Puerto Rico at the time. The first floor was used for doing business, while the second floor was occupied by the family’s living quarters.

After the Spanish-American War, the United States took control of Puerto Rico. The grounds of the Labadi mansion have been converted into a sugar cane plantation. The enterprise functioned until the fall of markets in the middle of the 20th century. nine0003

The territory of the manor was abandoned and left to be torn to pieces by vandals for many years. In 1993, the mansion was almost destroyed by fire — only the facade of the building survived. In the same year, the Municipality of Moka bought the property, along with 40 hectares of land around it, and it was restored to its former glory. The mansion was opened to the public six years later and is now called «Moro’s mansion» («Palacete los Moreau») .

The Moro Mansion is mentioned in the famous novel La Llamarada by Puerto Rican writer and Moca native Enrique Laguerra. The plot of the work is based on real events. The estate in the novel is called «Hacienda Palmeras» («Hacienda Palmeras»), and the inhabitants of the mansion are known as the Moro family, which gave the building its official name in the real world. Laguerre died in 2005, and, according to the last will of the writer, he was cremated, and his ashes were buried on the estate.

Good to know

Moro Mansion can be easily found on Google Maps. The estate grounds are open daily from 9:00 to 17:00. Tours of the mansion are organized from Thursday to Monday. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, maintenance and cleaning work is carried out in the building.

Tropical paradise: villa in Puerto Rico

Photo
Emily Andrews

The house, built in 1928, stands on the ocean and once belonged to the famous female aviator Clara Livingston, who inherited the estate from her father. Clara was an active woman, she immediately replaced the dilapidated wooden house with a new one, and at the same time built a runway on the site. nine0003

Clara, who died in 1992 at the respectable age of 92, has lived here for about twenty years. During this time, the house has seen a lot. So, for example, in 1937, the writer and the first woman pilot to fly over the Atlantic Ocean, Amelia Earhart, stopped here during her last flight. Some time later, she went missing over the Pacific Ocean while trying to fly around the world in her twin-engine light aircraft. nine0003

After living here for almost twenty years, Livingston sold the estate to businessman Laurence Rockefeller, third generation of the great billionaire dynasty, who, among other things, was engaged in the hotel business. Rockefeller decided to open the luxurious Dorado Beach resort here, and in the villa itself, which has now become known as Su Casa (translated from Spanish as “Your Home”), there is a golf club and a restaurant. Since 2012, the villa has been part of the Dorado Beach Ritz-Carlton Reserve and is rented out as a guest house. nine0003

A couple of years ago, the resort was badly damaged by Hurricane Maria, after which it was never fully restored. And finally, this year, the New York-based studio Champalimaud got down to business, which carried out a large-scale renovation and renovation, completely eliminating the consequences of the hurricane and turning the legendary house into a modern, fashionable, comfortable space.

“The building was still half-destroyed: the floors were swollen, the doors would not close, and part of the roof was missing,” says Anna Beeber, lead designer at the studio. nine0003

, thick concrete walls that will reliably protect against future natural disasters.

The area near the house has also undergone modernization: now there is a garden, a landscaped and tiled courtyard, an entrance area and a huge infinity pool overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. nine0003

Natural materials were used in the interior decoration: dark and light wood, tiles, textiles, and a calm light pastel palette, sometimes “diluted” with the classic black and white floor tile pattern.

“The result is a harmonious unity of nature and interior — a truly peaceful environment that allows you to relax, think, read and just relax in this elegant and comfortable version of the barefoot resort life,” say the designers. nine0003

The main addition made by the studio is a narrow covered terrace along the front of the house, which forms a bright hall separating the dining room from the large bedroom.

There are five bedrooms in total with their own bathrooms scattered throughout the building.
