Is there a negative balance on a debit card?

If we don’t talk about an overdraft, officially permitted by the terms of service, then a «minus» on a debit card is a rather non-standard situation. It is usually technical in nature and can happen for two main reasons. The first is the debiting of funds to pay for banking services. All sorts of commissions can serve as examples here: for SMS-informing, cash withdrawals from “foreign” ATMs, and so on.

The second common reason for an unauthorized (technical) overdraft is conversion when paying in a currency other than the account currency. The scheme of such transactions is such that the final settlement rate is usually set after a couple of days. In this case, it may turn out that, for example, in rubles for a purchase, you will have to pay a little more than the initially written off (blocked) amount. In proportion to the change (over these couple of days) of the exchange rate.

What is an authorized overdraft?

Authorized overdraft (or simply «overdraft») on debit cards is most often offered to holders as part of payroll projects. This option allows you to use the issuer’s credit funds — in other words, to make debit transactions on credit. The maximum amount of debt is usually commensurate with the average monthly salary, and the term does not exceed one year.

However, it should be understood that when the next salary is received, the funds go first to pay off the “minus”. Therefore, in most cases we are talking about a loan for a period of no more than 2-3 weeks. In general, the terms of an overdraft can vary significantly, and in theory approach the parameters of credit card loans. And its application is also possible in relation to individual (non-salary) debit cards.

What happens if there are not enough funds on the card to pay for the purchase?

In this case, the payment will simply not be made. For example, when using a terminal at a supermarket checkout, an automatic request is made to the issuing bank. If there are not enough funds, the transaction will not be approved, and a corresponding message will be sent. When an SMS notification is connected, a message about the requested operation and refusal is usually also sent to the cardholder’s phone. The situation is similar for online payments.

Offline debit card transactions are an exception. Communication with the issuer at the time of the purchase is not assumed, that is, the balance on the «plastic» account is not checked. Therefore, the amount of expenditure may exceed the amount of available funds, which will lead to a negative balance. However, this type of operation is not very common today.

Which debit cards are suitable for receiving a salary?

Limits and other restrictions, as well as other features of servicing debit cards, are contained in the conditions of the respective banking products. For example, the maximum withdrawal amounts (per day, per month), the possibility of receiving external payments deserve attention. But the vast majority of proposals provide a comfortable use of «plastic» as a salary. To do this, you must submit an application to the accounting department of the employer indicating the details of the card account.

Note that employers are often extremely reluctant to agree to make payments to the accounts of «third-party» banks, trying to keep employees in the corporate payroll project. However, the current version of the Labor Code (Article 136) gives the employee the right to independently choose a credit institution to receive «hard earned». Any restrictions in this area are illegal.

Can I access the funds on the card without the card itself?

A plastic card is a tool for accessing funds stored on an account linked to it. At the same time, the conditions for servicing bank accounts may differ. Today, many credit institutions are ready to issue funds from card accounts on a passport through a cash desk without any restrictions. Others carry out such operations only in case of damage or loss of «plastic». Still others limit customers even more, completely refusing to meet halfway.

One way or another, it is worth remembering: the client at any time has the right to close a bank account, having received (or sent to another account) the amount of the current balance. If such drastic measures are undesirable, remote maintenance services are able to “save”. As a rule, those offer various options for withdrawing funds. True, this recipe does not always work in a number of situations — for example, if the card is blocked.

We also note that in practice this issue is sometimes resolved differently in the branches of the same bank. If in one office the lost card is offered to wait two weeks for a reissue, then in another they can issue cash without any problems in a couple of minutes.

How old do you have to be to get a debit card?

Formally, young people from the age of 6 can be holders of debit cards. This circumstance follows from Art. 28 of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation, which establishes this age as the minimum for independent disposal of funds in a limited segment of situations.
