The city was founded on June 24, 1478 after the victory of the Castilians under the command of Juan Rejon over the Guanches. Many historical sites of the capital are associated with Christopher Columbus, he stopped at Gran Canaria during his expeditions to America, he also stopped during his legendary voyage in 1492nd year when America was discovered. The house where he then lived is now the Columbus Museum.
The history of Las Palmas has had good times and bad times. The city was repeatedly attacked, it was attacked by the English corsairs Francis Drake and John Hawkins in 1595, but he resisted. In 1599, the Dutchman Pierre van der Doijs attacked Las Palmas, but he did not submit to him either. On June 28, 155, a decisive battle took place between the Spaniards and the Dutch, after which the latter retreated and no longer claimed Gran Canaria and other islands of the archipelago. In honor of this victory, the Cathedral of the Canary Islands was built. nine0015
The economic development of the island and Las Palmas began in the 19th century with the founding of the Gran Canaria Coal Company. This led to the prosperity of the port of Las Palmas, where many ships called on their way to America.
