Ajuy (Ajuy) — Guide in Russian
Canary Islands, holidays in Spain
Description
Ajuy is a village located in the municipality of Pajara on the southwestern coast of the island of Fuerteventura. The village is located at the mouth of the Barranco de Ajuy river. Once it was an ordinary fishing village, now Ahuy has become a popular tourist destination. What attracts tourists here? The two main attractions are Fuerteventura’s only black sandy beach and unique volcanic caves surrounded by unusual lunar landscapes. nine0003
The village itself looks colorful, the houses are built in the traditional Canarian style — white and pastel houses are located around the beach. There are numerous restaurants and bars in the only square.
There are several gorges near the village, the biggest ones are Akhuy, Aulagar. Several volcanic ridges descend from the mountains to the ocean, forming coastal cliffs that run along the entire western coast of the island.

- -statistical-historical dictionary of Pascual Mados (1845-1850), as about a small village, consisting of four houses, three huts, where about 10 people lived.
Traditionally, the villagers were engaged in fishing and agriculture. Millet, cotton, potatoes and fruits were grown in the area. Gradually, the population increased, in 2000 there were already 118 people living here. nine0003
What to see
Akhuy is a place where unique natural attractions are collected, tourists find interesting unusual landscapes reminiscent of space, the opportunity to walk and admire the surrounding nature, the elements of the ocean. People do not come to Ahuy for a beach holiday, as on the entire west coast, it is always windy and there are waves on the local beach. But for the sake of fantastic volcanic landscapes, it is worth visiting here.
Ajuy Caves
Cuevas de Ajuy is the main local attraction, it is one of the deepest and most ancient caves of the Canary Islands. Their depth is about 300 meters, they were formed as a result of the passage of volcanic lava, from which the foundation of the island of Fuerteventura was formed.
These caves are of great interest to geologists and paleontologists. nine0003
Road to the Ajuy Caves
There is a legend that once the pirates who plundered the Canary Islands used these caves to store their booty and as their refuge.
Finding the caves is not difficult — the path to them starts in the northern part of the beach, at the beginning of the route there is an information stand introducing the history of this place. The route is not difficult and accessible to everyone, regardless of age and physical fitness. But you will need comfortable shoes with non-slip soles. The trail is about 500 meters long. The walk along the cliffs will take 20 minutes and will be a lot of fun. Visiting the caves is completely free. nine0003
On the way to the caves you will see hardened sand dunes, one of the oldest on the island. If you look closely at them, you can see inclusions of marine fossils. On the way to the caves, you will see abandoned lime kilns, and also climb to the highest point of the route, which offers a gorgeous view of the rocks and the ocean.
Steps lead directly to the caves. There are several caves, you can walk along them, moving from one cave to the next. In some places they have holes, allowing you to see how the waves break on the rocks. nine0003
This beach was originally used to ship grain and livestock to other islands in the Canary archipelago, to Madeira and even to mainland Spain.
Puerto de la Peña is surrounded by cliffs, where you can often see goats and squirrels. The beach is blown by the winds, and swimming in the ocean is not recommended due to strong undercurrents. It has a notorious reputation for its high number of deaths.
Puerto de la Peña Beach
There is no infrastructure on the beach, but along it there are several restaurants where you can enjoy delicious fish dishes or typical Canarian dishes. nine0003
Viewpoint Puerto de la Peña is the perfect place to watch magnificent sunsets.

The village is famous for its restaurants far beyond the island. Despite its modest size, there are many restaurants, taverns and bars in Akhuya, most of them are located near the beach and have terraces from where you can enjoy magnificent views of the ocean and rocks. The menu features Canarian and Mediterranean cuisine, but their main feature is dishes from the freshest fish and seafood. This is a great opportunity to try grilled octopus, delicious fish, shrimp, squid, mussels. nine0005
The village of Ahuy is located in the province of Betancuria on the west coast. To get here, follow the signs for Pajara and from there turn onto road FV-601 and then onto FV-621. The road from Pakhara to the village of Akhuy takes about 10 minutes by car.
