Greenhouse complex of Peter the Great Botanical Garden
More than a kilometer of greenhouses, the fifth largest collection in the world, the largest northern collection! A variety of exposition landscapes, three excursion routes, plants from all over the world, including rare and endangered plants of our planet. The description of the greenhouses is advisory, but not mandatory for guides. The content of sightseeing tours differs depending on the time of year and the plants blooming on the route. nine0003

From the history of our greenhouses
The first greenhouses for keeping medicinal plants were built in the middle of the 18th century, but there were no heat-loving tropical plants, since it was impossible to maintain stable temperatures in those buildings. The year 1732, when the first real greenhouse was built, should probably be considered the time of the beginning of the creation of greenhouse collections. More accurate information refers to 1749year when the first inventory of «African and exotic plants» was carried out. According to the inventory, three wooden greenhouses contained «921 units». Among them were several species of Aloe, Basella, Myrtus, Buxus, Citrus, Ficus, Pelargonia, Canna, etc. Judging by the set of plants, the greenhouses were heated, apparently, very moderately It is not known what the greenhouses looked like, but in a letter to Linnaeus, the then botanist Sada Falk describes them as “Chukhon rigs” in 1865. In subsequent years, greenhouse collections grew, cultivation rooms were built, their number was up to 1795 year reached twenty.

Subtropical
The subtropical climate is characterized by two seasons: hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The subtropical zone is located between the temperate and tropical zones and is represented on all continents except Antarctica. This is the most suitable climate for humans, because all the territories of this belt were among the first to be developed. nine0003

Tropics
In tropical climatic zones you can find forests, savannas, deserts. These are areas with the maximum species diversity on the planet and the most contrasting conditions of existence. Bizarre forms, unusual ways of adaptation, a riot of greenery or, conversely, the ascetic vegetation of rocky deserts. nine0003

Stock greenhouses
Stock greenhouses are not open to the public. They store plants that require special conditions, as well as small specimens. Many plants during flowering are taken out on excursion routes and are available for inspection. To show the diversity of the collections, the Botanical Garden holds thematic educational exhibitions several times a year. In the spring — the annual exhibition of succulents, in the summer — begonias, in the fall — a large exhibition of orchids «Shards of the Rainbow». In this section you can see photos of exhibitions that were held rarely or once. nine0003

Botanical Garden of Nizhny Novgorod State University named after N.I. Lobachevsky for a person far from science is, first of all, an opportunity to walk along beautiful flowering alleys, while getting acquainted with unique flora specimens growing in different climatic zones.
The University Botanical Garden was created, of course, not only for recreational walks. This is, first of all, a major research center, a kind of natural repository of the gene pool of the plant world of the planet. This is also a laboratory in which selection work is carried out. The unique collection plantings of the NSU Botanical Garden are of great scientific, cultural and historical value. Plants of more than 3.5 thousand taxa grow on its territory. nine0003
The following departments operate in the Botanical Garden: dendrological (trees and shrubs), rose garden, tropical flora department (greenhouses), fruit department, natural flora department, herbaceous plant group department and carpological laboratory (storage and study of seeds). There is also a shop in the garden, where everyone can buy seedlings of trees and ornamental shrubs, seeds of rare flowers and plants.
A visit to the Botanical Garden is a must for both a botanist and an inquisitive schoolchild and his parents who want to enjoy the incredible diversity of the fauna of our planet. nine0003
The garden can only be visited as part of an organized tour group. The Botanical Garden is open on weekdays from 08:00 to 17:00, and on Friday — until 16:00. The arboretum is open from May to October, the greenhouses are open all year round. Saturday and Sunday are days off.
