The inaugural Fiestas Patronales de Holyokewill take place in Open Square’s Dwight Street parking lot on Aug. 4-7.
HOLYOKE – The inaugural Fiestas Patronales de Holyoke will run Aug. 4 – 7 downtown at Open Square, a celebration of the city’s and region’s Puerto Rican culture and heritage.
Nueva Esperanza, the main organizer, bills the festival as the region’s largest Latino event in Western Massachusetts. Holyoke has the largest Puerto Rican population per capita outside the island.
The Fiestas Patronales are staples in municipalities around Puerto Rico, usually dedicated to a saint, according to Melvin Sanchez, a festival committee member.
“Our event is different. We are symbolically taking on the tradition that has been done on the island but modifying it to fit Holyoke,” Sanchez explained in an email.
Sanchez thanked local businesses for contributing to the festival and for the assistance of city officials and departments.
“It has been a great challenge organizing this event post-pandemic, especially the fact we are competing with hundreds of other cities and towns that are putting together these cultural events,” Sanchez stated.
The festival will take place in Open Square’s Dwight Street parking lot. Domenic Marte (Bachata singer), Juancho (Merengue singer), Viti Ruiz (Salsa Singer), and Grupo Mania (Merengue group) are slated to perform.
“We have received great support from the residents of Holyoke, who are excited to have a cultural event taking place in the city. We believe this event will become one of the marque events in Western Massachusetts, attracting people from the surrounding community and area. ” Sanchez added.
The festival will also honor Mayor Joshua A. Garcia, Holyoke’s first Latino chief executive, who has strong family ties to Puerto Rico. Garcia was elected to a four-year term in November and immediately took office to fulfill the final weeks of former Mayor Alex B. Morse’s time.
The mayor’s November and January swearing-in ceremonies drew large crowds, including many local and state officials from the Latino community. Holyoke’s Hispanic residents comprise 53% of the city’s population.
Nueva Esperanza put the call out this week for festival sponsors and donors. The event will feature music, food, and the traditional dance of Puerto Rico, the Bomba y Plena.
“This year, we will celebrate the first Puerto Rican mayor elected by the city. We will celebrate it with the cultural, music, and political contributions from the Puerto Rican community that has integrated into what it is today the City of Holyoke,” the event’s website noted.
Organizers are offering four sponsorship levels, Platinum ($20,000), Gold ($15,000), Silver ($10,000) and Bronze ($5,000). Major sponsors include Holyoke Medical Center, Golden Years Homecare Services, Baystate Health Systems, Quality Beverage Corporation and Trulieve.
Nueva Esperanza sponsored last month’s Noche de San Juan Festival in South Holyoke and Beyond Wall exhibition, which featured wall-sized murals along Main and High Streets.

Catholic or Protestant : The First Council of Nicaea (a gathering of bishops in the early days of Christianity) wanted to find a day to commemorate the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. This commemoration had to be linked to Jewish holiday traditions, since the last supper of Christ was believed to be a Jewish Passover meal. But the Jewish calendar is based on lunar and solar cycles, so the Easter celebration had to follow the same calendar. nine0005
