Bryant was a great tour guide, ask for him!! He customized based on our group’s mood, we had our 2 year old niece and 4 year old nephew who needed breaks from the heat. The Tomb of Ponce de León

On his search to discover the elusive Fountain of Youth, Ponce de León landed at a place he called Florida and later conquered Puerto Rico, eventually being appointed governor of the island in 1509. His original resting place was Iglesia de San Jose, but in the early 1900s he was transferred to San Juan Cathedral, where his body lies in a marble tomb near the transept.

This Catholic church is located in the town of Arucas, in Gran Canaria. It is called the Cathedral of Arucas (Spanish Parroquia de San Juan Bautista de Arucas ), although it is not a basilica or a cathedral.

Some buildings become the defining symbol of the city. The Church of San Juan Bautista Arucas has become such a symbol for the city of Arucas. It was built by hand without the use of any mechanization. The idea of ​​building this temple belongs to Francisco Gurrie Marrero and parish priest Francisco Cardenes Herrera .

The church was erected on the same site as the old parish built in 1515 by the Bishop of the Canary Islands Don Fernando Vasquez de Arce . This temple was gradually destroyed, required repair and was too small for the increased number of parishioners. Therefore, in 1909 it was demolished.

Money for the construction of the church was collected by local residents, so this church is so important to them.

The construction of the Church of San Juan Bautista began on March 19, 1909; it was opened for worship in 1917. But the construction of the church continued for almost 60 years and was finally completed in 1977 year.

Dominating the cityscape, the temple is 60 meters high and is the tallest church in the Canary Islands.

Architecture

The Neo-Gothic church of San Juan Bautista looks majestic and even somewhat gloomy. This impression is due to black basalt, the volcanic stone from which it is built. When viewed from afar, one gets the impression that the walls of the church are charred. During the construction, a special masonry was used, which is known only to a few Catalan masters. nine0005

The plan of the church has the shape of a regular square, its four facades are framed by sharp 8-coal towers. The main façade is located on the north side and overlooks San Juan Square. The central facade has a large doorway, which is a pointed arches, following one after another.

The church has one nave, the central sculpture of the temple is a crucifix of the 16th century, located in the main altar. Exquisite stained-glass windows give a special beauty to the church. Also one of the shrines of the cathedral is the sculpture of the resting Christ, made on Manuel Ramos Gonzalez .

The stained glass windows were made by the French company Maumejean et Fréres and are a true work of art.

The Church of San Juan Bautista houses many works of art by Italian and Flemish masters.
