Significance: The lazaretto’s original purpose was to house yellow fever and cholera victims, but few remember that noble commitment today. Instead, for over a century -and in spite of its ruinous state -the lazaretto has been an emblematic landscape component of San Juan’s Bay. Its distinctive profile has been appreciated by many generations of residents and visitors to the old city.
It represents the only example of its kind ever built in Puerto Rico, simultaneously underlining how Spanish colonial building codes required health related facilities to be built outside the walled enclave. Its construction methods highlight building practices imposed on the Island (and Cuba) by Madrid’s School of Engineers, Roads, and Port Facilities. The project’s dossier (narrative) became the precedent for detailing succeeding comparable building initiatives in terms of scope, tectonics, and contents.

Rights & Access

The Library of Congress does not own rights to material in its collections. Therefore, it does not license or charge permission fees for use of such material and cannot grant or deny permission to publish or otherwise distribute the material.

Ultimately, it is the researcher’s obligation to assess copyright or other use restrictions and obtain permission from third parties when necessary before publishing or otherwise distributing materials found in the Library’s collections.

For information about reproducing, publishing, and citing material from this collection, as well as access to the original items, see: Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record/Historic American Landscape Survey (HABS/HAER/HALS) Collection — Rights and Restrictions Information

  • Rights Advisory:
No known restrictions on images made by the U.S. Government; images copied from other sources may be restricted. https://www.loc.gov/rr/print/res/114_habs.html
  • Reproduction Number:

  • Call Number:

    HABS PR-140

  • Access Advisory:

Obtaining Copies

If an image is displaying, you can download it yourself. (Some images display only as thumbnails outside
the Library of Congress because of rights considerations, but you have access to larger size images on
site.)

Alternatively, you can purchase copies of various types through
Library of Congress Duplication Services.

  1. If a digital image is displaying: The qualities of the digital image partially
depend on whether it was made from the original or an intermediate such as a copy negative or
transparency. If the Reproduction Number field above includes a reproduction number that starts
with LC-DIG…, then there is a digital image that was made directly from the original
and is of sufficient resolution for most publication purposes.
  2. If there is information listed in the Reproduction Number field above:
You can use the reproduction number to purchase a copy from Duplication Services. It will be
made from the source listed in the parentheses after the number.

If only black-and-white («b&w») sources are listed and you desire a copy showing
color or tint (assuming the original has any), you can generally purchase a quality copy of
the original in color by citing the Call Number listed above and including the catalog
record («About This Item») with your request.

  3. If there is no information listed in the Reproduction Number field above:
You can generally purchase a quality copy through Duplication Services. Cite the Call Number
listed above and include the catalog record («About This Item») with your request.

Price lists, contact information, and order forms are available on the
Duplication Services Web site.

Access to Originals

Please use the following steps to determine whether you need to fill out a call slip in the Prints
and Photographs Reading Room to view the original item(s). In some cases, a surrogate (substitute image) is
available, often in the form of a digital image, a copy print, or microfilm.

  1. Is the item digitized? (A thumbnail (small) image will be visible on the left.)

    • Yes, the item is digitized.
Please use the digital image in preference to requesting the original. All images can be
viewed at a large size when you are in any reading room at the Library of Congress. In some
cases, only thumbnail (small) images are available when you are outside the Library of
Congress because the item is rights restricted or has not been evaluated for rights
      restrictions.

As a preservation measure, we generally do not serve an original item when a digital image
is available. If you have a compelling reason to see the original, consult with a reference
librarian. (Sometimes, the original is simply too fragile to serve. For example, glass and
film photographic negatives are particularly subject to damage. They are also easier to see
online where they are presented as positive images.)
    • No, the item is not digitized. Please go to #2.
  2. Do the Access Advisory or Call Number fields above indicate that a non-digital surrogate exists,
such as microfilm or copy prints?

    • Yes, another surrogate exists. Reference staff can direct you to this
      surrogate.
    • No, another surrogate does not exist. Please go to #3.
  3. If you do not see a thumbnail image or a reference to another surrogate, please fill out a call slip in
the Prints and Photographs Reading Room. In many cases, the originals can be served in a few minutes.
Other materials require appointments for later the same day or in the future. Reference staff can
advise you in both how to fill out a call slip and when the item can be served.

To contact Reference staff in the Prints and Photographs Reading Room, please use our
Ask A Librarian service or call the reading room between 8:30 and
5:00 at 202-707-6394, and Press 3.

All the beaches of Isla Mujeres in Mexico — Places of Mexico

The beaches of Isla Mujeres are considered to be among the best on the entire Caribbean coast of Mexico. Snow-white sand, the purest turquoise water, a flat bottom and the absence of waves — these are their main advantages. The island itself is a must to visit just for the beautiful beaches. Island life is unremarkable, similar hotels, restaurants and clubs can be found in Cancun and the Riviera Maya. But the beaches of Isla Mujeres will leave an unforgettable impression on a trip to Mexico! nine0003

Isla Mujeres can only be reached by ferries that depart from several marinas in Cancun. There is a cargo ferry from Punta Sam, where you can transport your car to the island, however, it is hardly reasonable to sail to Isla Mujeres with a car. The main transport on the island is rental golf carts and taxis.

How to get to Isla Mujeres on your own, we told in this article.

The most famous and most beautiful beaches of Isla Mujeres are located on the northern tip of the island, as well as on the «inner», western side. There are almost never waves here, because this part of the island is protected from the open ocean. Cancun is opposite. nine0003

The opposite, «outer» eastern part of the island is open to ocean winds and waves. Here, almost everywhere, there is a rocky coast, composed of volcanic rock, and a seething sea. This peculiar beauty must be seen, but you can’t swim here.

Playa Centro

Central Beach is the closest to the ferry terminal. Although it is not as famous as North Beach, it is almost as good as it. In width, it can be compared with many beaches of the Cancun Hotel Zone. There are numerous restaurants and shops within walking distance. nine0003

This is a classic «Caribbean» beach with fine white sand, turquoise water and palm trees. There are almost never strong waves. Palm trees are a natural protection from the sun, but they grow somewhat away from the water. And you can rent umbrellas and sun loungers near the water. Touts of local cafes and sellers of soft drinks walk along the beach.

Playa Norte

A little further from the Central Beach, on the northernmost tip of the island is the North Beach. This beach is considered the most beautiful and most romantic beach of Isla Mujeres. Both beaches, by the way, have the Blue Flag mark — the highest international rating in terms of ecology and convenience for vacationers. nine0003

You can visit this beach endlessly, and each time you will have new impressions. The color of the water changes depending on the light, the sea is always calm, and the yachts lined up behind the buoys complete the romantic landscape. Palm trees provide shade, and there is always enough of it. You can rent umbrellas and sun loungers from the beach bars. Toilets are also available in the bars.

Sometimes it gets too crowded — then go back to Central Beach.

At the northernmost point of the island is the five-star Mia Rif Hotel. In front of it is a shallow lagoon with flowing heated water. An ideal place to relax with children! A bridge on wooden piles is laid across the lagoon. Under this bridge you get the most romantic photos! nine0003

There are several smaller beaches near these two beaches. Although they have their own names, most often the same as the name of a nearby bar or hotel (for example, Playa Los Cocos), we consider them to be only part of the Central and North beaches.

Next we will move from the center of Isla Mujeres to the southern tip of the island.

Playa Pancholo

A small beach located on the east side in the central part of the island. The rocks surrounding it protect from big waves, but often the sea here is too active. It is also called Playa de la Media Luna, after the name of a nearby hotel. nine0003

This beach can also be reached on foot. It is located very close to the observation deck, where tourists like to take pictures against the backdrop of large multi-colored letters ISLA MUJERES. Not far from the hotel is the statue of the goddess Ichchel, another attraction of the area.

The sandy strip is small but very clean. The water is cooler than on the opposite side of the island. The beach is not equipped with amenities, but it is not crowded here.

The following beaches are located along the «inner», eastern part of the island. They are very similar to each other. They are almost always supported by a nearby beach club. You must remember that all beaches in Mexico are public and you can camp on any beach. However, the use of umbrellas and sun loungers is paid.

Playa Tiburon

The beach is named so because there is a small «zoo» of sharks and other marine species that swim in small paddocks near the shore. For only $2, you can take a photo or swim with a small shark. It is the shark nursery that makes this beach crowded, tourists are brought here, and sometimes you need to come to the beach early to take a seat. nine0003

Quite a modest beach compared to others. The sandy strip is very narrow, in some places the trees come right up to the water. Umbrellas, sun loungers and even tables and chairs can be rented. Amenities are located only in the beach club and in the hotel.

Approximately 3 km away is the archaeological site of Ekab Maya, which will also be interesting to visit.

Loading

Watch on Instagram

Playa Pescador

The beach is named after the club El Pescador located here. Or is the club named after the beach? Located next to the previous beach in the central part of the island. Quite a large and wide beach, there is enough space for everyone. The tourist infrastructure is developed here, active water games and entertainment for adults and children are offered. nine0003

The scenery is spoiled by several wooden piers, but many find it a perfect combination: relaxation under palm trees and fishing motifs. The main thing is not to go far along the coast, because there are few beautiful things in absolutely fishing places.

From the highway to the beach, there is a road through dense thickets, and if you are going to walk along the paths, sometimes you will have to make your way through thorny bushes. But this beach is filled with its romance, so many vacationers prefer its noisy central beaches. The territory of the beach is licked by hotel workers, and large starfish come across on the shore. nine0003

Loading

Watch on Instagram

The next two beaches are closer to the southernmost point of Punta Sur.

Playa Lancheros

Playa Lancheros is a small beach best known for its restaurant of the same name. Beautiful sea, equipped territory, rest in hammocks and rarely crowded. There is also a small tourist shark nursery, waterslides and numerous waterfront bars. nine0003

All in all, a pretty nice place to stay and if you’re willing to drive quite far from the center of Isla Mujeres, this beach won’t disappoint you.

Loading

Playa Indios

The beach is very close to Playa Lancheros. Almost everything is the same. Rarely crowded. In some places the entrance to the water is uneven.

Loading

Watch on Instagram

There are several other beaches nearby, Playa Paraiso, Captain Dulce, Playa Nomads. They are very similar to each other. nine0003

Playa Garrafon

Playa Garrafon is a completely different matter. It is located much closer to the southern tip of the island. This beach is for those who love beautiful Caribbean landscapes: rocks covered with palm trees, and under them a small beach, also surrounded by rocks and mangroves. The water here is of amazing turquoise color due to the color contrast of sandy and rocky bottom areas.

This beach is like the opposite of other Caribbean beaches, which are all like from the same handout. It creates a feeling of complete unity with nature, enhanced by lush Caribbean vegetation and a real sea. The sea here can be restless, but it looks like a real living sea! On the central beaches, snorkeling is not at all interesting: there is only sand under the water. On Garrafon, the underwater world is much richer, and it is here that tourists come to swim with a mask and snorkel. There are also developed active sports, sailing, etc. nine0003

You may be asked to pay to enter the beach, or you may be allowed to do so. Toilets are only available at the beach club.

If you are on this beach, be sure to visit the Punta Sur lighthouse, which is less than half a kilometer away.

Loading

Watch on Instagram

Pets Beach

The beach is located on the «open» eastern part of the island right under the Telmex TV tower, which will be your reference point. Opened in 2018 specifically for vacationers with pets, this is the only beach on Isla Mujeres and, perhaps, in Cancun too, where dogs are allowed. Not at all outstanding small beach, with a very uneven coastline and inconvenient entry into the water. But the dogs are happy, and the color of the sea is always amazing here! nine0003

The beach is equipped with a large number of straw umbrellas to protect from the sun, the use of which is free. The beach, by the way, is very carefully cleaned daily.

Loading

Watch on Instagram

Getting there

Playa Centro and Playa Norte can be reached on foot. When you exit the ferry terminal, turn left and walk along the sea along the street (Medina Avenue) with countless shops, restaurants and souvenir shops. The first beach you will have on your left is Playa Centro, 5 minutes walk to it. nine0003

When you reach the end of the street, you will see a monument to the dead fishermen. Turn right and then left onto any street leading towards the sea. A maximum of 15 minutes on foot from the ferry terminal and you are on Playa Norte.

The rest of the Isla Mujeres beaches are best reached either by golf cart or by taxi. The island is not that big, and you can drive from one end to the other in half an hour. Taxi fares are quite low, and if you’re going to lie on the beach all day, you don’t need a golf cart at all. nine0003
