Misconceptions of programmers about postal addresses / Sudo Null IT News
All cars have four wheels. The exception to this rule is Reliant Robin.
If a car has more than four wheels, then it is a truck, a bus, or a road train in general. There is also an exception here: the Mercedes-AMG G 63 6×6.
An attempt to describe the surrounding world easily reveals perceptual errors hidden like a blind spot on the retina. There are many misconceptions. At least there were enough lists about names, phone numbers or maps. It is time for addresses and postal systems.
Delusion 0. Address and name required for delivery
In May 2016, Skessuhorn told a touching story: a farming family in Hollar, northwest Iceland, received a letter that did not include the names of the recipients or the address to which it was to be delivered. The letter was sent by a foreign tourist who was staying in the village of Holar and did not know the exact address. Instead, the envelope showed the location of the recipient with a brief description of the place, instead of the name — «a Dane who works in a supermarket in Budardalyur.»
The address named exactly only the country (Iceland) and the village (Budardalyur). Next came the text description: a horse farm where an Icelandic/Danish family lives with three children and lots of sheep. The tourist sent a letter from the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik.
Yes, the postman had to sweat a little. And in general, 266 people live in Budardalyur, so he could know this couple by sight. The journalists composed a moral for this sweet story: everything is possible in Iceland — even a letter without an address will reach you.
It is clear that this is so out of line that it has become a whole news story for the Icelandic news agencies. It is impossible to call this a full-fledged delusion, so this goes out of the competition.
Misconception 1. Addresses do not change
Change the names of buildings, streets, cities, regions and countries. It is less obvious that individual formations change ownership or disappear. For example, the county of Gwent in Wales officially existed from April 1, 1974 to April 1, 1996, after which it was divided into several districts. For 22 years, many people have been born whose place of birth has formally disappeared. Will the database be able to properly handle this situation?
If a new post office is opened or the structure of the postal service is otherwise restructured, the index will also change. Yes, one branch — even the entire postal system of the country can change. This happened, for example, in Japan in 1998, as a result of which 3- and 5-character indexes were adjusted to a single 7-digit format, and mail got its own character — 〒.
In all these cases, the object does not move anywhere. The question concerns only the interpretation of the data.
Misconception 2. The index is the numbers that indicate the post office
In many countries, a postal code consists of numbers and letters. Even if the index consists of digits, it is not a number, and the leading zero cannot be discarded.
The index only indicates a shipping path or a group of addresses, not a geographic location of the object.
There may not be a postal code at all. This happens if there are few inhabitants in the settlement; perhaps the region is underdeveloped economically. Wikipedia tried to list thousands of such places.
Until recently, there were no indices in at least one developed country. Eircode system indexes do not point to a group of addresses, but to each (except PO boxes) of the 2.2 million addresses in Ireland. It is not necessary to indicate the addressee, street and city when sending. These indexes appeared only in 2015.
The index may not be available temporarily, but for quite a long time. This is true for the same Eircode, the receipt of which stretches for several months. If in March the mobile operator requires a correct address for the transition, and the index is promised until August, all that remains is to complain on the forums.
Even in normal indexing schemes, some significant entities have their own, personal zip code. For example, this is true both for an important government agency — the US White House (20500) — and for the expensive store Saks Fifth Avenue in New York (10022-SHOE). A zip code of its own is sometimes given for publicity: Forest Service mascot Smokey the Bear allegedly receives so many letters that he was given the zip code 20252. . For example, in the United States, 09 is indicated on the items for the naval forces.5, although such a global fleet cannot have a fixed location.
It’s only in early advertising that the index is needed to speed up mail processing. The index is not optional. For example, in the Ustyansky district of the Arkhangelsk region, the village of Berezhnaya occurs three times — there is no way without an index.
There are many myths around postal codes, some are country-specific. For example, some Britons are firmly convinced that for delivery it is enough to indicate the house number and postal code, since seven characters indicate a specific street or the recipient in general. There is no such rule. For example,
1-4 Jubilee Cottages, Warwick Road, B94 6AZ and
1-4 Cedar Cottages, Warwick Road, B94 6AZ are different properties, while CV12 8UE covers several streets with different houses with matching numbers.
It happens that the recipient’s address depends on the sender’s address. All correspondence for Santa Claus in the USA goes to the city of North Paul, Alaska, while in Canada, my grandfather has his own index H0H 0H0.
In Russia in 1971, a system of six-digit postal codes was introduced, which has changed little over half a century. Already on the near borders, in the countries of the former USSR, there are radically different formats, moving away from the Soviet legacy. For example, in Kazakhstan, since 2015, seven-digit alphanumeric indices have been written, and for the first time, Soviet indices in the country were replaced in 2004.
Non-CIS indices should not surprise you with their diversity. For example, the UK postal code is a seven-character alphanumeric sequence, after the first four there is a space: SW1A 2AA. The Japanese Postal Code is prefixed with a postal character 〒 followed by 7 digits: 〒100-8994.
Misconception 3. Postal code describes place of residence
The postal code does not indicate a specific place, but the route of delivery of mail.
People mistakenly believe that a postal code correlates well with a location. The researchers argue that short-term Airbnb rentals are more popular where the zip code is «tourist,» meaning it includes popular restaurants and entertainment venues.
The US is seriously trying to analyze socio-demographic trends, identify patterns that are useful for business activity, and simply estimate the population by zip codes. This is due to the fact that the US Census Bureau has developed its own statistical entity ZIP Code Tabulation Area, which completely coincides with the territory of a particular postal code. Statistical income reports are posted on their website by the tax authorities.
It seems logical that if you open a new retail chain store, then in the area of the postal code, where the average income is higher. In fact, the difference in income among the owners of the same index can be huge — tens, hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. Relying so heavily on indexes is not worth it.
Why do private businesses seriously resort to analysis by indexes at the state level and make deadly mistakes. For example, during the early stages of the drinking water crisis in Flint, researchers assessed blood lead levels in children. Based on these data, it was necessary to identify patterns of the spread of contaminated water. However, when analyzing the data, several different areas of the city were combined together. Not all owners of the same zip code receive water from the same source. It turned out that the elevated levels of lead were “diluted” by the inhabitants of the unaffected territories.
As a result, the authorities considered that water does not affect the health of children, although it was necessary to request the full addresses of patients. Don’t rely on postcodes.
A third of Flint’s zip codes are outside of the city limits, so the sample is half messed up. Conversation
Misconception 4. The world has decided on the order of writing addresses
There is no unity in the world, but there are many unexpected features. The accepted procedure differs from country to country. Sometimes it even depends on the number of available lines for writing the address.
For example, in Hungary, the full destination address on the envelope is written in four lines:
- Recipient’s name;
- Name of locality;
- Street and house or box number;
- Four-digit index.
If there is one line, suddenly the scheme changes by an order from the top level to the bottom: index, city, street, building number …
If there are two lines, addressing within the city comes to the fore:
- Street and house or box number;
- Zip code, name of the settlement, country.
Misconception 5. If a person is not homeless, he has a main permanent address
Human life is an exception to an illusory set of rules.
Not everyone lives in immovable buildings on land. Some, not without comfort, live permanently in motorhomes or houseboats. Floating objects without a motor or full-fledged ships are moored, residential cars and trailers are parked somewhere. Even these people find ways to receive correspondence: special services for receiving letters are created for them, or simply PO boxes at the marina.
There can be two or more permanent addresses. “Migratory birds” are a pronounced category of people who leave for the southern latitudes for the winter in order to avoid the snow and cold temperatures of their typical place of residence, and return for the summer so as not to lose touch with relatives and friends.
Systems must correctly take into account that a client can change the address of the permanent place of residence at least five times a year. Sometimes for the sake of nomads in motorhomes, at least some textual description of the location of the housing and the names of neighbors is accepted as an address.
Even those who do not travel anywhere have two addresses. For example, if the child’s parents are divorced, the children’s dental clinic will be asked to send mail notices and invoices to each of them.
Fallacy 6. House number is a natural number with predictable characteristics
In fact, the house number can be any text sequence of data. Including it can contain letters, be a fractional or negative number.
There are many building numbering schemes around the world. In Europe, houses began to be assigned numbers in earnest in the middle of the 18th century. In 1737, in small villages, it was ordered that signs with numbers be posted on the houses the day before the troops entered them. So they tried to simplify the organization of the cantonment of troops.
As a rule, the house number is a natural number that increases sequentially as the street progresses. The most familiar to us is the so-called European system. Historians, however, indicate that when creating this system, the French took the American invention of Clement Biddle for the 1790 census.
In the European system, on one side there are houses with increasing odd numbers (1, 3, 5 . ..), on the other — with even numbers (2, 4, 6 …). Such a system is found in Europe proper, the United States, as well as in the territories and former colonies of European powers.
Although modern British government guidelines suggest the use of the European scheme, in England and Germany there is a sequential numbering, where the houses were numbered sequentially in order of location. This is easier to number because land and buildings come in different widths. But now such historical incidents complicate life. Opposite house 126 stands, for example, house 233, which will make navigation difficult.
The author of the blog Chandler’s Ford Today tells how in Britain, in search of house 18, she went past houses 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and after crossing the alley she found herself near house 32. The desired house was found only in this alley, hidden behind the passage , which showed with all its appearance that this was no longer the same street. In other cases, the same straight road suddenly started counting houses from one as the street changed its name.
Newbury Road merges into Newbury Street without warning or road signs, because in a medieval city street is inside the city, road is outside it. The counting of houses again starts from 1. At the same time, the rest of the roads in the city, although they change road to street, do not reset the numbering in this way. Chandler’s Ford Today
Can the number be negative? As an exception to the rule, the house -1 on Priory Road in the city of Newbury in Berkshire, England is often cited. This house in all online databases and additionally above the entrance is called Minusone (literally «Minusodyne»), although the main plate displays «−1». Less well-known are at least 15 houses at number 0, six more houses at number -1 and one -2 (minus the second) house — and this is only in the UK.
The vegetation around the house often hides the number plate, but in some Google Street View images both inscriptions are distinguishable
As a rule, if another house is built between two houses, the new one will receive the number of one of the neighbors and some letter: 3a, 2b and so on. But this is not the norm either. The Unusually Named Blog lists 65 UK addresses with a fractional house number. Some of them are written in words (in the number field there is a construction like 12 & A Half, Forty Seven & A Half or The Red House 32 & A Half), some — as a number (the address looks like 6.5, St Peter’s Grove, York, YO30 6AQ). Also, the rows of houses 75, 75A, 75A½ 75B, 75 1, 75C on High Street in Earl Shilton in Leicestershire show that mixing of letters and fractions is possible.
Fractions rarely add less than ½. However, the houses do not agree with this map: all of the third series consider themselves to be the third, and the building at number 1¼ calls itself Windsor Cottage. Unusually Named Blog
In the metric numbering scheme, a house is numbered according to the distance from the selected reference point at one of the ends of the street. As in the European system, even and odd numbers are located on opposite sides of the street. There won’t be any surprises here.
Building numbers must be unique at least within streets, but no one canceled the proximity of two streets with the same name. From 50 Ammanford Road to 50 Ammanford Road, it’s about six kilometers to walk — these are two different streets in two towns near Ammanford.
In the post-Soviet space, some houses have double numbering and two street names, at the intersection of which this house is located. But in the form of a fraction, the number is written not only in Russia.
In the Czech Republic, the Habsburg numbering system is in place: buildings are numbered in order of construction with a unique number for a small municipality. Additionally, many buildings are equipped with numbers for orientation, squatter and private houses — with a registration number. In this case, the address will usually contain two numbers through the fraction sign, sometimes — one.
A plaque with the house number in Prague. If you need to find the address, you should look at the blue sign, where číslo orientační is indicated for orientation. The red plate indicates číslo popisné, a descriptive number that was originally drawn or engraved on the building and also indicates not the addressee, but the entire building. Functionally, the red plate can be called the cadastral number of the building. Prague Now
Buildings can be addressed by a specific name:
Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, WC2E 9DD, United Kingdom is the address of the Theater Royal, Covent Garden. Sometimes a building has both a special name and a number:
Ziggurat Building, 60-66 Saffron Hill, London, EC1N 8QX, United Kingdom . You cannot combine the fields of the building name and its number.
It is important to understand that no matter what the system, there may not be any patterns in the numbering. Sometimes a number is just a number that comes from nowhere. For example, in the city of Beccles there is a house number 9156, and this is not a densely built-up street, but a rural area with a small number of houses. There are no other houses on this road. Another «large» property is 2820 in Owls Green, a hamlet of 20 houses.
House 58 is between houses 40 and 50. Nesta
If the house number is a number, it still needs to be treated as a string. In general, leading zeros should not be dropped from any number. For example, in the city of Elektrostal on Lenin Avenue there are two different houses 4 and 04, and in the house
101 Alma St, Palo Alto, CA 94301 apartments 1 and 001 are located on different floors.
Fallacy 7. All addresses follow the same structure
In some countries or in special cases, an address is a special sequence of characters.
It’s easy to assume that a city doesn’t need to be specified for city-states, but in Singapore the address looks even more unusual. This state, like Ireland, adopted a system in 1996 that matches each address with a unique code.
It would be nice to specify the recipient, house number and street, but in general the string
238801 or, for international shipments,
Singapore 238801 will indicate exactly where to deliver the letter.
Flex with an unusual Eircode address and successful delivery to an address in Ireland. O’Dea
Mongolian addresses are hard to read. Because many settlements are nomadic, there was no established addressing system until 2016. Then the country switched to the proprietary system What3words, which divides the surface of the Earth into squares of 3×3 meters and encodes their position with a combination of 3 words.
The society may be highly urbanized, and the addressing system strict and developed, but completely unusual for us.
Japanese addresses indicate the prefecture and city, but then there is a municipal division that is unfamiliar to us, either into machi and districts, or oaza, aza and koaza. The level boundaries are blurred, several systems continue to work simultaneously, and street names are hardly used. Some areas (Sapporo and Kyoto) retain their divisional features.
The military does not consult with anyone about their address system — on the contrary, they put forward their own requirements. US Post expressly asks not to indicate the country and city in which the addressee is located, so that the letter does not go by mistake to the postal service of this country. Instead, the address will have a zip code, an identifier for what the letter is for the military (for example, the abbreviation APO, Army Post Office), a PO box, and a branch/mail center/ship number.
Fallacy 8. If the address is a familiar system, there will definitely be a house and street
A street, a house indication, or any combination of these components may be missing.
Sometimes the address is given as a kilometer number on the road. This usually refers to a farm in the middle of nowhere, where there is nothing else for the address to cling to. This also happens in more urbanized regions. For example, the Carribena Cimaas movie theater in Arecibo, Puerto Rico is located at km 81 of Highway #2. More than 80 thousand people live in the city in question.
In Russia, houses without a street are common in small towns. It is far from a fact that every system will figure out that the street simply does not exist. Instead of «der. Eskino, d. 1 «, some will indicate the name of the village next to the house as if it were a street. Not only the street, but also the house number may be missing — only the name of the settlement, microdistrict and building:
Zvenigorod, Suponevo, building 1 .
The address of the property does not appear automatically — you need to get it, for example, at «Gosuslug» in a request to the local government. Sometimes the address at the house is lost due to bureaucracy problems. If there is real estate without an address, then it can remain so indefinitely. In houses without an address, someone lives for years. And even though there will be problems with registration or sale of the object before receiving the address, these people want to receive letters, call an ambulance and generally not deny themselves anything.
Misconception 9. The address does not contain obscenities
Vaguely Rude Places (“Slightly Rough Places”) has collected dozens of examples from around the globe. In Russia, for example, there is the village of Vagina in the Tyumen region.
Fallacy 10. One toponym — one object
It is expected that in the same city there can be two streets with the same or similar name. It is even easy to predict that this will happen in Berlin, since for decades its two halves have been developing independently. Indeed, there are 8 pieces of Berliner Straße in the city.
It is more difficult when there is only one street and two names.
It happens that the same road has two names: for driving in one direction and the other. An example of this is Haddington Place and Elm Row in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. There are such streets even without a fender in the middle: Ashgrove Terrace / Richmond Terrace and another similar pair of Cambridge Terraces / Oxford Terraces. This means that 1 Ashgrove Terrace is across from 1 Richmond Terrace. Not every system can handle this.
In another case, on Queen Street/Grosvenor Terrace (Google Maps incorrectly displays the position of Grosvenor Terrace), there are even-numbered houses on both sides of the road with no repeats.
Cities have several equivalent official names. Among other difficult situations, The Hague stands apart: in the Dutch language, the city is called both Den Haag and ‘s-Gravenhage — yes, the first character is an apostrophe.
Fallacy 11. The address is small, it can be easily parsed with simple tools
Since the name of the organization and its structure are included in the address field, it is possible to enter an address of arbitrary length:
Department For Environment Food & Rural Affairs (D E F R A), State Veterinary Service, Animal Health Office, Hadrian House, Wavell Drive, Rosehill Industrial Estate, Carlisle, CA1 2TB, United Kingdom . This address needs an input field of at least 200 characters. The Bischöflich-Geistlicher-Rat-Josef-Zinnbauer-Straße street in Germany requires 50 characters to be written.
Even within the framework of processing addresses of one country, regular expressions will fail. Probably, in some cases
.* will work. But seriously, the problems will begin, if only because the street can be called Street or contain the name of two descriptors (Avenue Road in Toronto or Street Road in Somerset).
There are open libraries and modules for parsing email addresses for many languages: PHP, C++ and Java, Python or Go. Parsing tools are divided into those that rely only on algorithms and those that have access to databases. Data is issued by postal services, sometimes it is licensing or selling for a lot of money. Processing the datasets themselves is difficult.
For example, the Japanese post office publishes a huge CSV file with all country codes. There is even a separate blog ken-all. hatenadiary.com devoted to complaints about the data presentation format in this file. To digest
ken_all.csv into a more convenient posuto package, it took the efforts of a third-party developer who defeated all difficulties. Here is just one of them: if the name of the county in this table goes beyond the character limit, a line break will occur. In this case, the remaining fields will be repeated in approximately the same way:
12345,Kyoto,Kyoto,"North Town (Up Lower Godsroad from"
12345,Kyoto,Kyoto,"the West, Down Turtle Street from the"
12345,Kyoto,Kyoto,"East, Up Old Temple Road from the"
Often, address parsing problems are taken over by third-party validation services that successfully exist and make money on it.
Fallacy 12. I (not) have to parse the postal address
If you look at the list of features above, you want to howl and forever abandon any attempts to parse the address, giving the user one large text field of thousands of five characters — let him figure it out.
You can’t do that. If you get too inspired by such lists and leave one text field for the address, users will indicate only the street and house there, and forget the city and postal code. It is best to request each item directly.
A service like Google Maps may need to parse the address. Why would anyone else?
- Address validation for correctness. Perhaps it will be possible to catch the most obvious errors.
- Inclusion of tax in the cost and reporting to regulatory authorities. Sometimes the tax rules themselves differ because the client lives or is registered in another country or state.
- Possibility of delivery and other rules of the service. This is especially important in our age of foot couriers with colored thermal backpacks.
- Improving the quality of service. The client has two accounts, but both indicate the address with a slight difference: instead of «str.» used «street», for example. If you catch this in advance, you will be able to save a lot of paper and nerves.
In some cases — for example, a joint bank account — it is important to know that two people live in the same house. It is clear that two people will absolutely write down the same address with a slight difference.
- Fraud tracking. If the client filled in the billing address somehow wrong, the transaction will go to the security service. If the payment from the card goes far beyond the habitat of the bank client, the transaction may be rejected automatically.
- Analytics. Stores are extremely interested in where their customers live, which requires matching the text of the address with the real place on the map. And if the map turns out to be a fat money spot, the trading network builds its own ziggurat in this place.
- Partner requirements. The delivery service may give a discount if the address is issued according to a given pattern. Sometimes you have to deal with clumsy regulators: customs requires the airline to address the stay with a breakdown into separate fields.
But there’s good news: It doesn’t make sense to load yourself with all the richness of features if you need to write a delivery service form in the area. To deliver sushi in Lyubertsy, there is no need to know the municipal division of Japan. To a large extent, such lists of misconceptions in real life are useless.

The Call of Atlantis
To my parents,
who taught me to never give up
Everything in this novel is fiction, except for those places where everything is real
Arecibo, Puerto Rico
For the past forty-eight hours, every second not stolen by sleep, Dr. Mary Caldwell devoted to studying the signal received by the radio telescope. She was exhausted, delighted and sure of one thing: he is orderly, this is a sign of intelligent life.
Behind her, John Bishop, another researcher assigned to the observatory, poured himself another drink. He went through scotch, bourbon, then rum and all the other spirits until all that was left was peach schnapps. John drank it undiluted: there was simply nothing to mix with. Bishop grimaced as he took his first sip.
It was nine in the morning, and his distaste for alcohol would last another twenty minutes, until the third drink.
«You’re imagining things, Mar,» he said, putting down his empty glass and concentrating on filling it again.
Mary was irritated because he called her «Mar». Nobody ever called her that. There was something untidy about that nickname. But John is her only company, and they have come to some kind of understanding.
After the outbreak, when people across Puerto Rico were dying by the tens of thousands, they found themselves practically isolated in the observatory, and John immediately tried to call her. Mary sent him off. A second attempt followed two days later. After that, Bishop made advances every day, more and more aggressively, until Mary kneed him in the balls. This somewhat tamed him, forcing him to switch to drinking and snide remarks.
Getting up, Mary went to the window overlooking the lush green Puerto Rican hills and forests. The only sign of civilization here is a parabolic antenna sunk into a plateau among the hills and directed straight to the zenith. The radio telescope at the Arecibo Observatory is the largest radio telescope in the world, a triumph of human technology. It symbolizes the synthesis of sciences, which has culminated in the peak of human creation, nestled in the middle of a primitive landscape, personifying the past of mankind. And now he has accomplished his highest mission. Contact.
«He’s real,» Mary snapped.
— How do you know?
— It has our address on it.
Looking up from his drink, John looked up.
— We need to get out of here, Mar. Back to civilization, to people. You will immediately feel better…
— I can prove it. — Turning away from the window to the computer, Mary pressed a few keys and called a signal on the screen. — It has two sequences. What the second one means, I have no idea, I admit it. She’s too complicated. But the first is made up of elementary repetitions: on-off. 0–1. binary numbers.
— Exactly. But there is a third code — a separator. It appears after every eight beats.
— Eight bits. One byte. John pushed the bottle aside.
— This is the code.
— I don’t know yet. Mary went back to the computer to check on the progress. “There is less than an hour until the analysis is complete.
— This may be a coincidence.
— Can’t. The first part, already decrypted, is our address.
Laughing out loud, John grabbed his drink again.
— You fooled me for a minute, Mar.
— If you were going to send a signal to another planet, what would you put at the beginning? Address.
Nodding, John poured more schnapps into the glass.
— Uh-huh, don’t forget the zip code.
— The first bytes contain two numbers: 27624 and 0.00001496.
John was silent.
“Well, think about it,” Mary urged him. What is the only constant in the entire universe that doesn’t change?
— Gravitational constant?
— The gravitational constant is a constant, but its value depends on the curvature of space-time and on the mutual proximity of gravitating objects. And we need a common denominator, which is known to any civilization, on any planet, regardless of its mass and location, throughout the Universe.
John just turned his head around as if he was looking for an answer.
— The speed of light. This is a universal constant. It never changes, no matter where you are.
— Right …
— The first number — 27 624 — is the distance to the Earth from the center of the Galaxy in light years.
— This distance can refer to dozens of planets. ..
— The second number is 0.00001496 — the exact distance from the Earth to the Sun in light years.
John stared at the space in front of him for a good minute, then pushed the bottle and half-empty glass out of sight. And he fixed his eyes on Mary.
— This is our ticket.
Mary raised her eyebrows.
— Let’s sell it. John leaned back in his chair.
— For what shisha? In my opinion, all the supermarkets have already closed.
— Well, I think no one has canceled barter yet. We need protection, decent food, and basically everything we’ve ever wanted.
— This is the greatest discovery in the history of mankind. We will not sell it.
— This is the greatest discovery in the history of mankind — at the moment of its greatest despair. The signal is hope. distraction factor. Don’t be stupid, Mar.
Stop calling me Mar!
— When the plague broke out, you retired here because you wanted to do what you love until your hour strikes. As for me, I came here because I knew that there was the largest liquor store within walking distance, and I was also sure that you would turn up here. Yes, I fell for you from the moment I landed in San Juan. He threw up his palms before Mary could get a word in. — I’m not into that at all. I mean, the world you know has come to an end. People are in despair. They act out of self-interest. For me, the main thing is sex and alcohol. For the people you’re going to call, it’s about holding power. You give them the means to that end—hope. Once you provide it, they won’t need it anymore. This is not the world you remember. He’ll chew you up and spit you out, Mar.
— We will not sell anything.
— You are a fool. This world does not spare the idealists.
A computer beeped behind Mary. The analysis has ended.
Before she could look at the results, a noise rumbled down the hallway in front of the office from the opposite end of the building. Is someone banging on the door? Mary and John looked at each other. Both froze.
The clatter grew louder until it was finally interrupted by the sound of glass breaking on the floor.
And then slow footsteps.
Mary was about to move towards the office door, but John caught her by the arm.
“Stay here,” he whispered, picking up the baseball bat he brought with him during the outbreak. — Lock the door. If they are here, it means that food on the island is tight.
Mary reached for the phone, knowing who to call now. With trembling hands, she dialed the number of the only person who could save them, her ex-husband.
Rise and Fall

near the northern coast of Morocco
David Weil was already naughty from the corner from the corner to the corner of the cramped norie, in complete absentee when Kate will return — and whether she will return at all. He kept glancing at the bloodied pillow. The stream, which began as a couple of drops ten days ago, has grown to a river that stretches from the pillow to the middle of the bed.
«I’m fine,» Kate repeated every morning.
— Where do you go every day?
— I just need some time. And spaces.
— Time and space for what? David didn’t hesitate.
— To get better.
But she didn’t get any better. Every day when Kate returned, she felt worse. Each night brought more and more monstrous nightmares, sweat and nosebleeds so much that David began to fear that nothing could stop them. He hugged her, showed patience, waiting, hoping that the woman who saved his life, whom he himself had saved two weeks ago, would cross some line and miraculously recover. But every day she only slipped a little more. And now it was too late. She has never been late before…
David looked at his watch. Three hours late.
It could be anywhere in the huge Atlantean ship, covering sixty square miles and buried off the mountainous coast of Northern Morocco, directly opposite Gibraltar.
