Travel to San Juan
San Juan is located on the north shore of Puerto Rico and its historic center, known as Old San Juan, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its preserved city walls, 16th- and 17th-century colonial architecture, and cobblestone streets made from the ballast of Spanish ships arriving more than 500 years ago (an even earlier arrival by ship was Christopher Columbus in 1493). Today these streets are lined with antique shops, jewelry stores, art galleries, souvenir stands, and array of restaurants and sidewalk cafes offering mouth-watering Puerto Rican cuisine, as well as flavors from around the world.
Adjacent to Old San Juan, on a point guarding the entrance into San Juan Bay, sits Castilla San Felipe del Morro (“El Morro”). Designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the fort is the most famous site in Puerto Rico and offers a rich history and iconic views. East of Old San Juan is the newer section of the city and the resort areas of Condado and Isla Verde, offering the best of both worlds — city life and resort escape with pampering hotels, excellent beaches, and a thriving dining and nightlife scene.

Discover Puerto Rico
Brimming with culture and natural beauty, Puerto Rico is a one-of-a-kind destination. Home to a vibrant Mayan community and the world’s second-largest coral reef, Puerto Rico is a place filled with happy, easy-going people, with a rich blend of languages and cultures.
Situated in the northeast Caribbean Sea, Puerto Rico is an archipelago made up of the main island and four smaller islands, including Vieques and Culebra, as well as several islets and cays. The main island, with an area of 3,425 square miles (8,870 square kilometers), is the smallest of the Greater Antilles. The island is a preeminent beach destination, with approximately 298 miles (480 kilometers) of coastline boasting some of the most stunning beaches in the world.
For centuries after Puerto Rico was discovered in 1493, it was a Spanish colony, until it became a United States territory in the late 19th century. Now organized as a commonwealth, it remains part of the United States, so the island’s official currency is the United States dollar, and many islanders are bilingual, with Spanish continuing to be their primary language and English as their second language.
Puerto Rico is widely regarded as one of the best vacation destinations in the world, thanks to its sublimely beautiful beaches. Whether on the water or on land, there’s no better place to appreciate nature at its finest. The island is also known for its attractive Caribbean architecture, enriched by influences from many cultures. And Puerto Rico has even more to recommend it—including its people, who are happy, hospitable, and fun. Plus, there are countless things to do; you’ll find music and opportunities for adventure at every turn. The warm tropical climate is just right, with temperatures that rarely climb above 81 °F (27 °C), and the food is delicious. Puerto Rico is the birthplace of a number of classic cocktails, including the piña colada, and it’s a great destination for dining, whether you want to sample one of the island’s traditional dishes or savor the finest haute cuisine.
With Copa Airlines, you can fly to Puerto Rico on an airline known for on-time performance and World-Class service. As you explore everything this destination has to offer, you’ll discover for yourself why Puerto Rico is known as the Island of Enchantment.

What is there to do in Puerto Rico?
Get a flawless tan
With some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, Puerto Rico is the perfect place to bask in the sunshine. Some of the island’s best beaches are in the municipality of Dorado and the Condado neighborhood of San Juan. If you’re seeking a more secluded spot, you’ll want to head for the islands of Vieques and Culebra. Culebra is home to the renowned Flamenco Beach, which lies some distance from any sizable city. The beach, with its fine white sand, is sheltered by lush vegetation, and the turquoise waters are shallow and inviting. It’s an ideal place to while the day away in the company of good friends and a refreshing beverage.
Experience an adrenaline rush
Puerto Rico is an excellent destination for thrill-seekers, with activities like parachuting, kitesurfing, and scuba diving to satisfy even extreme adventurers. You can also go hiking, ziplining, and paddleboarding. For a once-in-a-lifetime experience, go kayaking at night. There’s nothing else quite like it, whether you’re seeing the shining lights of the beautiful city of San Juan or exploring one of Puerto Rico’s three bioluminescent bays. You’ll find one of these bays in the village of La Parguera, in the municipality of Lajas.
Dance the night away
Puerto Rico’s thriving music scene and vibrant nightlife are among the island’s greatest draws. In San Juan, the center of the action is at Placita de Santurce. This former market square is bordered by historic buildings and a variety of restaurants, and at night, the area fills with revelers eager to sing and dance their hearts out. Live music and dance performances can be found anywhere on the island, and many venues also offer dance classes for anyone who wants to learn to get down to the music.

Puerto Rico Island — travel and other — LiveJournal
Puerto Rico is a small island in the Caribbean that has a very interesting status — the island is dependent on the US, but is not essentially an American territory, but they share the same citizenship, currency, and all flights departing from the US to Puerto Rico are considered local, without customs and other special passport control. If you have American internal documents, rights, for example, then you can fly on them. Or you need an American visa in a Russian passport. But the islanders did not always have such relations with America; initially, the island, as you might guess from the name, was owned by the Spaniards. nine0003
At the end of the 15th century, Christopher Columbus landed on the island inhabited by local Indians Taino . By tradition, the territory was named after the saint — John the Baptist, in the Spanish version — San Juan. The main city of the new possession was called Puerto Rico (i.e. «Rich port»). Everything was logical and good, exactly until the moment when the island began to be mapped. Cartographers confused the name of the city and the island, and in the end we have what we have — the state of Puerto Rico with the capital San Juan. nine0003
So, the island was colonized by the Spaniards, and almost all of the natives died. This happened for the most part due to the fact that the Europeans and their slaves, brought from Africa to work on the ground, brought to the island a huge number of diseases unfamiliar to the local population, as a result, there were practically no Taino Indians left. Due to the fact that Puerto Rico was under the influence of Spain for several centuries, the main language in the country is Spanish, but probably 90% of the people with whom we had to communicate speak English very well, but not all, although English is also is the official language. nine0003
The Spaniards used the island as a trading port and fort (in which they kept a lot of gold, among other things). Since those times, two very famous fortresses have remained in Puerto Rico, here they are, but these are such grandiose structures that I will talk about them in a separate post.
1.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Europeans who fled from economic difficulties traveled here, as a result, very soon the white population began to predominate on the island, hence the Puerto Ricans (whose blood contains a large percentage of European blood) are much lighter than most of the rest inhabitants of the Caribbean islands (where the main inhabitants are the descendants of black slaves). nine0003
From colonial times, the island has an architectural style, for example. Here is the Old City, or Old San Juan.

In addition to the Spaniards, many European states tried to conquer the island, but they did not succeed, which cannot be said about the United States. In 1898, the Spanish-American War took place, as a result of which Puerto Rico became one of the American territories. Now the island is a very popular destination for American tourists. A lot of people come here on cruise ships, like this

Yellow sand and clean clear water, very shallow near the shore, a very good place to snorkel even for those who don’t know how to swim.

In the evening after sunset and early in the morning flocks of small sharks, 70-80 centimeters long, sailed to our hotel, and, in principle, a lot of fish.
