Origen de los villancicos en inglés

Empezaremos por decir que la palabra Villancico, en inglés, se escribe Christmas Carol. En su origen, el carol (villancico) era una composición que surgió durante el siglo XV. Originalmente se trataba de una danza que posteriormente se convirtió en composición basada en una poesía religiosa de estilo popular. Los villancicos navideños en inglés grabados aparecen por primera vez en una obra del año 1426 de John Awdlay, un capellán de Shropshire y, desde entonces, cientos de canciones navideñas han dado alegría y calor a la Navidad.

We wish you a Merry Christmas

El clásico por excelencia. Originario del oeste de Inglaterra, la versión moderna apareció por primera vez en el coro de Arturo Warrell.  Se cree que fue allí donde sustituyeron el «we» por el «I» inicial, y ese uso del plural fue lo que incrementó su éxito, dándole su índole tradicional y convirtiéndolo en el himno de los buenos deseos, traducido a numerosos idiomas en todo el mundo.

Jingle Bells

Compuesto en 1857 por el músico James Pierpont, bajo el título original One-Horse Open Sleigh, algo así como un “trineo abierto tirado por un caballo” , Jingle Bells no era un villancico en principio, pero se convirtió en él más tarde, cuando los coros tradicionales se la apropiaron como una canción navideña. El villancico evoca las campanas usadas por los trineos de Nueva Inglaterra del siglo XIX.

Como curiosidades, parece ser que fue la primera canción retransmitida desde el espacio, cuando los tripulantes de la misión Gemini 64 contactaron por radio con la base en Tierra el 16 de diciembre de 1965 y, tras comunicar el avistamiento de una extraña nave comandada por alguien vestido de rojo, cantaron la canción acompañándose de una pequeña armónica y unos cascabeles que habían colado en la nave.

Fue además la inspiración del también famoso Jingle Bell Rock de Bobby Holmes en 1957, que ha acabado convirtiéndose en el tema final de la banda sonora de toda la sagaLa Jungla de Cristal, con Bruce Willis como protagonista, otro clásico cinematográfico navideño.

¡La bso de Love Actually, otro clásico indiscutible y probablemente una de las canciones más versionadas de los últimos años!Ha sido votada como la canción navideña favorita de Reino Unido. La clave de su éxito, según la mayoría de los encuestados, es que es un villancico que no te provoca ganas de acabar con tu vida.

A su compositor y productor, Walter Affanasief, productor también de My Heart Will Go On de Celine afirma que no esperaba para nada el éxito de la canción. Como anécdota simpática, durante la composición de la canción en junio de 1994, Mariah Carey decoró la casa que alquilaba con su marido Tommy Mottola en los Hamptons de Navidad. No le importaría demasiado recoger luego, ya que simplemente con los derechos generados por esta alegre canción, solamente en 2013 se embolsó la friolera de 440.000€.

 The Twelve Days of Christmas 

Los doce días de Navidades un villancico tradicional inglés frecuentemente incluido en el “carolling”, una actividad que sigue siendo popular en el Reino Unido y en la que grupos de niños y adultos van cantando villancicos de puerta en puerta por su barrio o en el centro de la ciudad, generalmente con el objetivo de conseguir fondos para una buena causa. Esta canción sirve además para practicar los números y la memoria, ya que hay que ir recordando los doce regalos que se mencionan. También podéis actualizar la letra a vuestra manera sustituyéndolos, por ejemplo, por “12 texters tweeting, 11 bloggers blogging…” (“12 tuiteros tuiteando, 11 blogueros blogueando…”).

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas 

Quizá la menos conocida y la más nostálgica. Esta canción, compuesta por Hugh Martin y Ralph Blane, en 1944, para la película musical Cita en San Luis interpretada por Judy Garland, se convirtió enseguida en un clásico. Con el paso del tiempo fue versionada, entre otros, por Frank Sinatra, e incluida en la lista de 100 canciones más representativas del cine americano. ​

Santa Claus Is Coming to Town

Uno de los Villancicos que mejor ha resistido el paso del tiempo. Compuesto en 1932 por John Frederick Coots y Haven Gillespie, su popularidad fue creciendo a lo largo de todo el S.XX y XXI, sobre todo en EE.UU, hasta convertirse en todo un clásico navideño, utilizado como banda sonora de docenas de películas y anuncios. La canción ha sido versionada por numerosos músicos y adaptada a todos los estilos, desde ​Ella Fitzgerald a Bruce Springsteen, Mariah Carey o incluso Justin Bieber.

Happy Xmas (War is Over)

Compuesto por el genio John Lennon en 1971 fue inicialmente un himno contra la Guerra de Vietnam, pero pronto se convirtió en una de las canciones navideñas más simbólicas y versionadas en todo el mundo.

John y Yoko financiaron una campaña publicitaria con la letra de la canción con el mismo propósito, pero el tema trascendió la Guerra del Vietnam para convertirse en un alegato a la concordia y la paz atemporal, en cualquier rincón del mundo.

White Christmas

White Christmas, cantada por Bing Crosby, es la canción navideña más vendida en todo el mundo, así que no podemos obviarla, tenía que estar en nuestra lista. Es una de las canciones más nuevas de la lista, la escribió Irving Berlin en 1942, aunque innumerables artistas han hecho versiones de ella, Elvis, Iggy Pop y Lady Gaga, entre otros, y se ha traducido a una infinidad de idiomas.

Silent Night

Silent Night (Noche de paz) es básicamente el Happy Birthday de los villancicos: es la canción más popular del mundo y ha sido traducida a más de 100 idiomas. Franz Xaver Gruber compuso Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht en 1818 en Austria; dos años más tarde, se añadió la letra y la canción ha viajado por el mundo desde entonces y se han hecho mil versiones. Silent Night fue incluso declarada patrimonio cultural intangible por la UNESCO en 2011.

¿Dónde se cantan villancicos?

El villancico es una forma musical y poética en castellano y portugués, tradicional de España, América latina y Portugal, muy popular entre los siglos XV y finales del Siglo XVII. Los villancicos eran originariamente canciones profanas con estribillo, de origen popular y armonizadas a varias voces. Posteriormente comenzaron a cantarse en las iglesias y a asociarse específicamente con la Navidad. Compositores notables de villancicos fueron, entre otros, Juan del Enzina, Pedro de Escobar, Francisco Guerrero, Gaspar Fernandes, Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla y Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz.

En los países anglosajones, se cantan los Christmas carols, en Valonia los heyes, en Rusia los koliadki a las puertas de las casas, en Rumanía las colinde, en Polonia las kolęda, en Bulgaria las koleda, en Italia los canti Natalizi o las pastorali, en Alemania las Weihnachtslieder.

What are notes — definition and letter designation, notes in music

Due to the conditional graphic sign — note — certain frequencies are not only expressed in writing, but also make the process of creating a musical composition understandable.

Definition

Notes in music are tools for instantly fixing a sound wave of a specific frequency in writing. Such predetermined recordings form the whole series from which the music is composed. Each note has its own name and a certain frequency, the range of which is 20 Hz — 20 kHz.

To name a specific frequency, it is customary to use not specific numbers, since it is difficult, but the name.

History

The idea to arrange the names of notes belongs to the musician and monk from Florence Guido d’Arezzo. Thanks to his efforts, musical notation appeared in the 11th century. The reason was the difficult training of the choristers of the monastery, from whom the monk could not achieve a harmonious performance of church works. To make it easier to learn compositions, Guido marked sounds with special squares, which later became known as notes.

Names of notes

Each musical octave consists of 7 notes — do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, si. The idea to name the first six notes belongs to Guido d’Arezzo. They have survived to this day, practically unchanged: Ut, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La. The monk took the first syllable from each line of the hymn that the Catholics sang in honor of John the Baptist. Guido himself created this work, which is called «Ut queant laxis» («To a full voice»).

Over time, the name of the first note changed from Ut to Do (in Latin, the word «Lord» sounds like «Dominus»). The seventh note si appeared — Si from the phrase Sancte Iohannes.

White and black

Keyboards have black and white keys. White keys correspond to the seven main notes — do, re, mi, fa, salt, la, si. A little above them are black keys, grouped by 2-3 units. Their names repeat the names of the white keys located nearby, but with the addition of two words:

• sharp is a prefix to the name of the black key to the right of the white key;
• flat is an additional name for the black key, which is located to the left of the white key.

Two white keys share one black key, which is why it is called a double name. Consider an example: between white do and re is a black key. It will be both C-sharp and D-flat at the same time.
