  It was nice to stroll along and enjoy the view of the Caribbean Sea on one side and open air restaurants on the other. Sometimes free range horses would stroll along.

  The Malecon is THE spot in Esperanza. If you’re here, you will end up on the Malecon. There’s just not much else other than the beaches. The esplanade itself can be walked in about 8 minutes…

  The place to see and be seen. Nice stretch of road with views of the beach on one side and restaurants and places to stay in the other. Excellent for a walk or to connect with other travelers. Easy access to nearby beaches.

  We had the best time in vieques and were so happy with beautiful Malecon house. They reached out several times prior to our stay to help us with booking any tours we wanted to go on, getting a feel for transportation options and to make sure we were all set the day before arrival. Cannot recommend their service highly enough! The property faces the ocean, has a beautiful pool, and is steps away from Esperanza restaurants and a beautiful small beach, perfect for morning and evening walks.

  La Esperanza! I fell in love with this beautiful city because of its people and the nice beaches. The sand is not my favorite as is too rough and not powdery but still beautiful. Lots of quenepas trees and expensive restaurants but there’s food available if you get hungry. There’s a swing on a coconut palm right on the beach and sea glass of you look.

  Lovely beach, with a broken pier that can be used for a jump, good for snorkeling as you will find a lot of sea life under the pier. But be careful to go close to the pillar as you could hurt yourself

El Malecón de Arroyo fue concebido como parte de un proyecto de Colaboración desarrollado por la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico y la Compañía de Turismo de Puerto Rico. Esta iniciativa, a través de toda la isla, propuso la revitalización de 6 malecones existentes deteriorados en 8 pueblos, de los 78 municipios de Puerto Rico. El proceso de diseño conceptual comenzó en la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico, donde estudiantes y profesores desarrollaron ideas conceptuales. Consecuentemente, se convirtieron en proyectos de política pública del Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico.

Uno de los malecones a revitalizar era el del pueblo de Arroyo. Arroyo se encuentra en la costa sureste de Puerto Rico y está limitado al sur por el Mar Caribe. Eugenio Ramírez / ERERAS Arquitectos fue seleccionado para desarrollar los conceptos, diseñar y avanzar las estrategias del Malecón de Arroyo, fomentando la interacción entre la comunidad y la naturaleza, a través de la arquitectura y los enfoques urbanos. La intervención proporciona las características que lo identificarán como un hito para este pueblo.

Nuestro diseño considera la morfología urbana existente, la relación inmediata con el Mar Caribe y la reestructuración del espacio público para enriquecer la experiencia con el paseo marítimo. El concepto integra el diseño de un parque, ribera y escenarios culturales para proporcionar lugares que se abren, reconocen el mar y su puesta del sol del Sur. El diseño incluyó varias comodidades como un escenario, pabellones, y espacios para sentarse entre otros. La combinación de texturas: hormigón expuesto, diversos patrones de pavimentación y vegetación, mejoran la experiencia urbana. La circulación axial y las pasarelas se fusionan con la arquitectura y el diseño urbano, para integrar el contexto inmediato que consiste en algunos de los edificios históricos de Arroyo, algunas intervenciones menores previas y el escenario natural.

El proyecto se subdivide en varias áreas. En el Oeste, una tarima enmarca el espacio construido y natural con un voladizo de concreto con dimensiones de 10.7m x 10.7m y, al Este, cuenta con varios concesionarios de comida típica del lugar. Esta estrategia de diseño crea dos núcleos de actividad que interactúan entre sí y estimula la mezcla de usuarios entre estas dos zonas también esbozadas por la arquitectura y el Mar Caribe. El espacio de transición es un paseo generoso que proporciona acceso al muelle, que fue cuidadosamente diseñado para ser descubierto por los usuarios.

La arquitectura resultante es una solución específica y distintiva al paseo marítimo de Arroyo.
