Many other breaks are just a quick drive away or hire a local boat in las salinas.

Playa Popoyo (Playa Guasacate) is a long stretch of remote coastline several kilometres northwest of the little town of Las Salinas de Nagualapa, named for the salt evaporation ponds you’ll pass on the way in. Apart from a few surfers and fishers, this stretch of sand is almost empty, ideal for a long walk at sunset. The large, dramatic rock formations on the beach are fun to explore at low tide.

Local community tours Food supplies:

We recommend stocking up on groceries from one of the big supermarkets (La Colonia, La Union, Maxi Palí) in Managua, Granada, or Rivas. If this is not possible there is a small shop at the end beach, that always has the basic stuff and other shops just a few miles away.

Eating out:

There are numerous options for dining out within the area. There are a handful of restaurants on the beach and a two-minute drive to the commercial zone at the main road you have some bar food at Mad Dog Pizzeria, and coffee and Ice cream in Algo Rico. For a higher end restaurant experience at the beginning of the Guasacate road is La Jolla De Guasacaste ($) with a great environment, first-class cuisine and perfect for a family day out. Then you have the best Nica breakfast (egg, tortilla, rice, and beans) at El Toro, for local authentic food we highly recommended La Perla de Guasacaste and for Pizza night and some drinks Viento del Este. There’s also café Dutchies Deli with homemade bakery and delicious sandwiches perfect for kids or hangouts.

Summary

The surf in Popoyo, Nicaragua is well known for being extremely consistent due to its offshore wind and year round barrel opportunities. This is what attracts more and more surfers every year who are, for the most part, trying to get away from the Costa Rican crowd.

To find the best surfing destination for you, try our WaveFinder search engine!

Popoyo is located on the southern end of Nicaragua’s Pacific coast and is a very good destination for laid back die-hard surfers trying to get in the water as much as possible without getting involved in the San Juan Del Sur madness.

Many surf spots are located right around this little village. The most popular is simply called Popoyo. This A-frame reef break is very consistent and challenging while still being quite forgiving for surfers looking to improve without worrying too much about the consequences.

Beginners can also find their waves at the river mouth on Playa Guasacate or at Playa Santana, near Magnific Rock. On bigger swells, there is another spot called Popoyo outer reef which is a very shallow and hollow right-hander that should only be kept for experts.

When to go

The best time to surf Popoyo, Nicaragua is from April to October, when waves are more consistent and sizable while winds drop almost dead. This also happens to be the rainy season in Central America.

The winter months, from November to March will offer decent conditions for learning on smaller waves as well as being sunny almost every day.

It was here, according to the legends of Homer’s poem, that the legendary king Odysseus spent seven years under the spell of the goddess Calypso. Golden sand can also be found on the beaches of Hawaii, in the Greek Kefalonia and on the Spanish island of Tenerife.

surprisingly, they are not very rare. One of the most famous red beaches is located in Greece on the island of Santorini, near the city of Akrotiri. The rocks surrounding the beach and the shore itself have become copper-burgundy due to the red limestone that is part of the soil. The beach seems especially bright due to the contrast with the blue water. There are other famous red beaches in Canada — Honokalani Black Sand Beach, Oneuli Beach, Kehena Beach, Pololu Valley Beach . Similar beaches can be found in Tenerife, Fogo, Jamaica, California, Syria and New Zealand.

This beast — COLL water. Multi-colored glass pebbles shimmer in the sun with all the colors of the rainbow. At the beginning of the 20th century, there was a landfill for household waste on the coast, in 19In 67, the authorities closed it, some of the garbage was removed from the coast, and nature edited the rest to its own taste.
