Baja California Sur — Mexico — Planet Earth

Geography

The state of Baja California Sur occupies the southern half of the California Peninsula — a long narrow strip of land that protrudes far into the ocean and stretches parallel to the mainland. A low mountain range stretches along the axial part of the state, ending at the southern tip of the peninsula near Cape San Lucas. On the cape is the city of Cabo San Lucas — the second largest and most populated after the capital La Paz. Cabo San Lucas is a popular place for beaches that merge into one long strip called the Los Cabos Corridor, or Corridor del Oro — Golden. Here is the most famous natural landmark — the symbol of the state — the rock of El Arco. Its shape with a characteristic round hole is well known throughout the world.

The state has the longest coastline in the country. It also includes several dozen small islands: in terms of their number, the state also ranks first in Mexico. The islands and the sea coast are a lot of beaches, the main visitors of which are visitors from the USA.

Nature

There are only two relatively large rivers in the state, the rest are temporary streams that form after heavy rains and dry up literally before our eyes.

Cape Pulmo National Park has been created to preserve the largest coral reef in the Gulf of California. This reef is more than 20 thousand years old, it is inhabited by about 6 thousand different species of mollusks, invertebrates and fish. The El Vizcaino Whale Sanctuary is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Diverse fauna has been preserved: iguanas, several species of turtles, many birds, including a large population of pelicans that have chosen the islands on both sides of the peninsula. Higher in the mountains there are deer, mountain lion (puma). The vegetation is represented by species that have adapted to the arid climate: a variety of cacti and shrub pine.

The California Peninsula is often compared to a finger, and the state of Baja California Sur, located in its southern part, to its extreme, nail phalanx.

History

Before the appearance of the Spanish conquistadors in these parts, and after them — the Catholic missionaries, the local Indian tribes, until they were destroyed, only began to move from gathering to farming.

Nomadic tribes appeared on these lands about 14 thousand years ago. In the caves, drawings of ancient people have been preserved, very authentically depicting snakes, birds, wild cats and those who hunt them. The rock art in the Sierra de San Francisco is another UNESCO World Heritage Site in the state.

The Spaniards discovered these places in 1533, discovering four tribes: Perico, Guaicur, Monquil and Cochimi. They already mastered the art of pottery, built large rafts to travel along the coast, and had a complex mythology. They disappeared by the end of the 18th century: they died in clashes with the Spaniards (the Indians exterminated all the missionaries, considering them messengers of an evil spirit from the bottom of the ocean) and from imported diseases.

Hernan Cortés visited this place in 1535, but he and the conquistadors after him did not stay in these places isolated from the mainland for a long time. In the 17th century the Jesuits got here, they tried to settle here, in 1697 by building the first mission. And later, a couple of dozen more, until in 1767 the remaining monks were expelled from here at the behest of the Spanish king. When there were almost no Indians left, the Dominican and Franciscan fathers preached on the peninsula.

The state stayed away from the revolutions and wars in Mexico. In the middle of the 19th century, after the American-Mexican War of 1847, the parties managed to agree on the division of these disputed territories. 1876-1910 — the time when the Indians who moved to the state finally lost all their lands, given to supporters of the president-dictator Porfirio Diaz.

The status of this corner of Mexico was determined only in 1974, when the State of Baja California Sur was proclaimed.

Currently, the state is developing mainly by serving American tourists — divers and surfers. The locals, the Sudkaliforniano, live in several towns and in the countryside, working on plantations.

Curious Facts

  • The state flag features four fish on a blue background, symbolizing the richness of the ocean waters surrounding the state. The large bivalve shell in the center is a symbol of the struggle that the inhabitants waged to protect its borders.
  • A significant income comes from the extraction of sea salt obtained by simple evaporation in the sun. On the west coast, in the region of Guerrero Negro, on the border with Baja California Northern, there are hundreds of huge tanks — containers filled with sea water evaporating under the sun. The remaining salt can only be collected and cleaned.

  • In the old days, pirates used the rock of El Arco as an ambush to surprise Spanish ships that were going to the Philippine Islands, to Manila, with a cargo of Mexican and Peruvian silver from Acapulco, and back with goods, mainly silk . From afar, El Arco seems very small, but this is only an illusion. The local authorities have long banned climbing the rock because of the increasing incidence of falls from it.

  • In the resort town of Cabo San Lucas, especially for tourists, most of whom are Americans, a newspaper with the characteristic name «Gringo Gazette» is published twice a week.

  • The state has its own independent source of energy: a geothermal power plant has been built near the volcano Las Tres Virgines (Three Virgins, it consists of three cones). The volcano last erupted in 1746.

  • In the middle of the 19th century. the current state managed to visit the status of an independent republic for three months. Taking advantage of the post-war confusion, the American William Walker (1824-1860), who settled in California during the years of the gold rush, left the practice of law, rented a ship and, at the head of a detachment of forty mercenaries, landed first in Cabo San Lucas, and then in La -Pace. When he reached the governor’s residence, he lowered the state flag and raised his own. There is a lot of strangeness in this case, and the American archives related to this case are still marked «secret». Walker remained in La Paz, waiting from day to day for the promised reinforcements. This mysterious «someone» was believed to be the American multimillionaire William Vanderbilt (1821-1885). Presumably, it was he who paid for Walker’s adventure. Poor Southern Baja California was to become a springboard for the capture of another Mexican state — rich Sonora on the opposite coast of the Gulf of California with huge deposits of gold, copper and coal. But, probably, Vanderbilt changed plans, and Walker did not wait for the promised money and people. Subsequently, he got involved in several more adventures and even served as president of Nicaragua until he was shot by the authorities of Honduras.

Envigado — frwiki.wiki

Envigado is a Colombian city in the department of Antioquia.

It is bordered to the north by the country’s second largest city and economic capital, Medellin, to the east by El Retiro, to the south by El Retiro and Caldas, and to the west by Sabaneta and Itagüí.

Envigado («beam» in Spanish) got its name from the fact that the wood of tall trees was used to make the main beams of the city’s first houses. Other theories say it’s because of the old beam bridge that was used to bring the population into the city.

In 2005, the city had about 175,240 inhabitants and its inhabitants are called «Envigadeños».

The inhabitants of the departments of Caldas, Quindio, Risaralda and Antioquia, of which Envigado is a part, are most commonly referred to as «paisas» and are for the most part descended from Basque, Andalusian, Extremaduran or Catalan settlers.

History

The land of the present city was inhabited by the Yanakonas tribe, belonging to the great Nutabe family. Its range was Envigado, as well as Sabaneta, Itagui and La Estrella.

Then in 1541 these lands were gradually colonized by the Spaniards, with the arrival of Jeronimo Luis Tejelo on the order of Jorge Robledo (1500-1546), conquistador and marshal of the Spanish XVI — th century.

The origin of Envigado is closely linked to the existence of Medellin. At first, the countryside covered a vast area that included what is now Envigado, Sabaneta, Itagui and Caldas. Estates quickly appeared on this territory, populated by their owners, rich people who gave their offspring in marriage to the Spaniards who came to make a fortune. These possessions multiplied and prospered, increasing the population of this territory.

At the beginning of the last quarter of XVIII — th century, in 1775, urban life appears in Envigado, during the creation of the parish of Santa Gertrudis. The Place de la Paroisse is created and the first streets are born everywhere.
