Article San Juan. City where cards are everything / San Juan game review | all about board games

San Juan is a card game released in 2004 by the author Andreas Seyfarth. Based on his super-famous «Puerto Rico». The game is designed for 2-4 people. Duration approximately 45-60 minutes. The difficulty is slightly below average, the rules are explained in a little less than 10 minutes, but the meaningfulness of the actions comes after 1-2 games. The game mechanics are similar to Race for the Galaxy and could well be considered RFtG light. The rating on BGG is 7.32/10. nine0003

Components

The components of the game are perhaps one of its weakest points. To illustrate, you can look at the original maps. Obviously, an arbitrary fantasy setting would look quite appropriate on the maps. And a similar redesign was done on «5-» by Mikhail Margitych (the minus is the «Ruined Palace» map). A printed redesign might look something like this.

nine0002

Original view on the left and printed redesign by Monkey on the right. Redesign image courtesy of Levsha.

I printed my version as follows. Double-sided printing on paper with a density of 120 g/m2. On the back there is a repeating pattern. Cutting with a clerical knife, and rounding the corners with scissors. The last is packaging in a thin laminate (100 microns, 65 mm. for 95 mm.). The black backdrop looks better, but I didn’t guess what I didn’t guess.

Game progress

Before the game begins, the trading house cards are shuffled to form the trading house deck. The Governor’s card is given to one of the players, in fact, this is the first player’s token. The rest of the characters are laid out in the center of the table. Each player is given one of the simplest production buildings, it will be built initially. All other building cards are shuffled and four are dealt to each participating player. You can start. nine0003

The player with the Governor card chooses one of the roles for himself, and the action of this role is played by each of the players. The order is clockwise, starting with the player who chose the card. Then the player following him also chooses a role for himself, and all players in turn, starting with the one who chose the card, play its action. This continues until each player has chosen a role card. This round of the game ends. Role cards are returned to the center of the table, and the Governor card passes to the next player. nine0003

The game ends when a player completes their 12th building. After that, the calculation of points begins, which are brought by the constructed buildings and only they.

Role Cards

Builder

Each player may build one card from their hand. To do this, he must discard any other cards according to the cost of the card being built.

nine0068 Gold digger

The player who chooses the role simply draws one card. The gold digger phase applies to everyone, but by itself does not give anything.

Mayor

Each player must take 2 cards from the deck (whoever chooses the role takes 5) and keep only one of them.

Manufacturer

The player who chooses this role takes a card from the top of the deck and, regardless of its face, places it face down on two of their unoccupied production buildings. The remaining players may place a card from the deck on one of their unoccupied production buildings. nine0003

Merchant

The player who has chosen this role starts selling goods.

Reveals the top trading house card.

He can sell both one item and two items. He takes the appropriate goods from the selected factories and discards them on the discard pile. Then he draws cards from the deck according to the values indicated on the trading house card.

nine0002

Subsequent players can sell one of their goods at the indicated prices.

As his last action, the Trader places the revealed trading house card face down under the trading house deck.

Trading house card determines the current selling price of each of the produced goods.

Building maps

Building cards are divided into two types: production and non-production. They are separated by background color and have common properties.

Industrial buildings

Industrial buildings are of five types, which differ in the cost of construction and the cost of goods sold from them. The current sell price, as is clear from the description of the trader’s action, is determined by the trading house card. So, the price of a good produced in the cheapest production building will always be 1. On a building costing three, it will fluctuate from 1 to 2 (four twos and one unit), but a good produced in the most expensive building will already bring 2 or 3 cards (three threes and two twos). nine0003

Production buildings can be built in any number, without worrying about the built copies.

Non-production buildings

Or «blue» buildings.

Almost all blue buildings work in one of the phases and provide benefits to the player who built them. The effects are quite diverse and allow, for example, to produce or sell additional goods, to receive cards when certain conditions are met. Three cards have no effect and are simply worth more points. For players playing for the first time, I recommend just carefully reading the text on the map, this removes most of the questions. For more demanding players who want to better understand what and how, the rules provide a more detailed description of the effect of the cards. nine0003

Two expansions have been released for the game. The first contains additional building cards that greatly expand the choice of strategies for the player. So, for example, the cathedral, which lies in the center of the table and can be built by any player. A customs house that allows you to “produce” goods in it during the mayor phase, and an office that allows you to “scroll” cards at the beginning of the turn. The second expansion provides 6 event cards, when they are revealed (as a result of drawing a card or a building action), they are laid out in the center of the table and can be played by one of the players instead of choosing a role card. The played event is reset. nine0003

Tips from a player who has played several games

Discuss the possible effects of the cards.

Try to use the cards that come, and not dream about the arrival of specific cards.

Try to ensure that the effects of the cards you build support each other. For example: Haunted Mine/Stone Quarry (build the blue building one card cheaper) and Workshop/Carpenter (get the card after the blue building is built). The Ruined Palace/Crane (build on top of other buildings) and the City Council (one victory point for each blue building) also potentially fit well there. Read more about card combinations here. nine0003

Follow the strategy of other players, the game allows you to use the actions of other players to your advantage.

Comparison with Race for the Galaxy

Number of players 2-4.

Number of players 2-4. Add-ons provide the ability to play with six players (6). nine0003

Large amount of text on maps. All actions of the card are described in the text.

There is virtually no text on the cards. All actions are set out in symbols that must be remembered.

There is no official translation into Russian.

An official Russian translation exists. nine0003

Simpler rules.

More complex rules.

Closed. Cards in the game have a limited set of effects. There are two additions to the game, almost completely closing all the possibilities for expansion.

Open. Maps from the base interact with expansion maps. Three major expansions have been released for the game and a fourth is in preparation. nine0003

IMHO from the author of the review. If you played something like this and you liked it, then it’s better to buy RFtG, and in the original version. But if you just want to get acquainted with games of this kind, then find the printed localization of San Juan.

Conclusion

San Juan is an average board game in terms of difficulty and game time. The score on BGG is not very high, and this is understandable. The randomness factor in it is quite high, which somewhat repels serious players. For family and casual players, it has non-trivial rules. A big factor, in my opinion, is the unsuccessful original design, and printing by hand is still an extra hassle. In addition, although it is not expensive, the lack of localization and a large amount of text on the maps makes it difficult for it to reach the hearts of domestic players. nine0003

However, not everything is so bad. For more or less experienced players, learning the rules will not be a problem, moreover, it can be a springboard for learning more complex Race for the Galaxy. The level of interaction is not high, but the actions of other players need to be monitored. The downtime is small, and there is virtually no kingmaking. There is something to think about and decisions are not made automatically, but it is difficult to break the brain. The difference in incoming cards and the variability of the strategy allow you to safely play many interesting games. nine0003

So if the company is assembled, and the box with the game is nearby, then why not?
