San Juan is a card game released in 2004 by the author Andreas Seyfarth. Based on his super-famous «Puerto Rico». The game is designed for 2-4 people. Duration approximately 45-60 minutes.
The difficulty is slightly below average, the rules are explained in a little less than 10 minutes, but the meaningfulness of the actions comes after 1-2 games. The game mechanics are similar to Race for the Galaxy and could well be considered RFtG light. The rating on BGG is 7.32/10. nine0003
Components
The components of the game are perhaps one of its weakest points. To illustrate, you can look at the original maps. Obviously, an arbitrary fantasy setting would look quite appropriate on the maps. And a similar redesign was done on «5-» by Mikhail Margitych (the minus is the «Ruined Palace» map). A printed redesign might look something like this.

I printed my version as follows. Double-sided printing on paper with a density of 120 g/m2. On the back there is a repeating pattern. Cutting with a clerical knife, and rounding the corners with scissors. The last is packaging in a thin laminate (100 microns, 65 mm. for 95 mm.). The black backdrop looks better, but I didn’t guess what I didn’t guess.
Game progress
Before the game begins, the trading house cards are shuffled to form the trading house deck. The Governor’s card is given to one of the players, in fact, this is the first player’s token. Building maps
Building cards are divided into two types: production and non-production. They are separated by background color and have common properties.
Industrial buildings
Industrial buildings are of five types, which differ in the cost of construction and the cost of goods sold from them. The current sell price, as is clear from the description of the trader’s action, is determined by the trading house card. So, the price of a good produced in the cheapest production building will always be 1. On a building costing three, it will fluctuate from 1 to 2 (four twos and one unit), but a good produced in the most expensive building will already bring 2 or 3 cards (three threes and two twos).

Almost all blue buildings work in one of the phases and provide benefits to the player who built them. Two expansions have been released for the game. The first contains additional building cards that greatly expand the choice of strategies for the player. So, for example, the cathedral, which lies in the center of the table and can be built by any player.

Discuss the possible effects of the cards.
Try to use the cards that come, and not dream about the arrival of specific cards.
Try to ensure that the effects of the cards you build support each other. For example: Haunted Mine/Stone Quarry (build the blue building one card cheaper) and Workshop/Carpenter (get the card after the blue building is built). IMHO from the author of the review. If you played something like this and you liked it, then it’s better to buy RFtG, and in the original version. But if you just want to get acquainted with games of this kind, then find the printed localization of San Juan.
Conclusion
San Juan is an average board game in terms of difficulty and game time.
The score on BGG is not very high, and this is understandable. The randomness factor in it is quite high, which somewhat repels serious players. For family and casual players, it has non-trivial rules. A big factor, in my opinion, is the unsuccessful original design, and printing by hand is still an extra hassle. In addition, although it is not expensive, the lack of localization and a large amount of text on the maps makes it difficult for it to reach the hearts of domestic players. nine0003
However, not everything is so bad. For more or less experienced players, learning the rules will not be a problem, moreover, it can be a springboard for learning more complex Race for the Galaxy. The level of interaction is not high, but the actions of other players need to be monitored. The downtime is small, and there is virtually no kingmaking. There is something to think about and decisions are not made automatically, but it is difficult to break the brain. The difference in incoming cards and the variability of the strategy allow you to safely play many interesting games.
