at the Russian consumer, not tempted by frills, brand names written beautifully, and even in Latin letters, inspire more confidence than any others: imported ones are certainly better than their own! Shoe manufacturers have adopted this bend of the mysterious Russian soul.

Fontanka shook up the shoe brands that remained in reputable St. Petersburg shopping centers, and was terribly surprised when they found out who they belong to.

Mascotte, Thomas Munz, Salamander

Websites selling shoes of these brands do not hide that they belong to the Russian holding Zenden Group. It includes a retail shoe network and shoe production, which is located in Russia, Uzbekistan, China and India. In 2019, Zenden took over shoe chain Alba , which was founded by Alexander Bayer, and with it the brand of men’s shoes Svetski .

Basconi

The legend on the brand’s website says that Basconi shoes were born in Italy in 1942. Today, one of the owners and copyright holders of the Basconi trademark is an individual entrepreneur Vitaly Ifraimov, registered in Balashikha near Moscow. The main production of the brand is located in China. Shoes of this brand are included in the portfolio of brands of Basconi / Vitacci.

Migliori

Le Migliori means «the best» in Italian. The melodic name of handmade shoes will probably mislead someone about its origin, but the illusion will be dispelled immediately after visiting the site: Migliori shoes were created by Makhach Khaibaev. In the same place, on the site, it is indicated in plain text that its owner is an individual entrepreneur from Dagestan Rashid Rasulovich Khaibaev. Production is located in Russia.

Tervolina

Shoe market players name the owner of the brand Tervolina entrepreneur Vadim Stepanov. In Tervolina LLC, in whose name the trademark is registered, he holds the position of General Director, while the LLC itself is 99% owned by the Cypriot TERVOLINA LIMITED and only 1% by the Moscow Theory LLC, where Stepanov is 100% beneficiary.

The brand’s shoes appeared on the Russian market in 1992, and at first the company produced Czech, Hungarian and Italian shoes for the Russian market. At 19In 1998, production was moved to Togliatti to the Leader factory, but already in 2004 it was liquidated after bankruptcy. Brand collections are produced in Asia, Europe, South America and Russia.

TJ Collection, Carnaby, Chester

The TJ Collection website says that the brand was founded in 1993 in London by immigrants from the USSR, graduates of Moscow State University — Timur and Yulia, from the first letters of their names the name of the brand was formed.

Trademark rights today TJ Collection, Carnaby and Chester belong to the Moscow-based KL GROUP LLC, which has been 100% owned by the Malaysian company United Trading Limited since 2018. General Director of TJ COLLECTION Azat Akhmetov.

Carlo Pazolini

On its website, the brand positions itself as the world leader in the production and sale of luxury footwear, with factories in Italy, Spain and China. And although the name transparently hints at Italy, the founder of the company is Russian businessman Ilya Reznik. On Internet marketplaces, sellers indicate Italy as the country of origin of the brand, and China as the country of origin.

Eber Klaus

The European sound of the name of shoes «Eber Klaus» misled more than one generation of shopaholics, although this brand is originally Russian. Since 2009, the rights to the EBERKLAUS EBER KLAUS trademark have been owned by the Moscow LLC MVT International, although the production itself opened in 1998. Since 2011, the trademark has changed owners twice, finally settled with RVS LLC, which leases property, and since 2021 it has become half as long — EBERKLAUS, in this form it is valid until 2031. But there is not a word about Eber Klaus shoes in the information field, just as the company does not have a thematic website. Moreover, industry market players claim that the brand could not stand the competition and went into oblivion.

Renzoni

The history of the Renzoni brand, told by an online marketplace specializing in the sale of fashionable Italian shoes, goes back to 1995. The young designer Ilasio Renzoni discovered the secret formula of comfortable and stylish shoes and turned around so famously in his native land that a year later they flew to Russia and began to be sold on a large scale here. Maybe it used to be like that, but the last time the brand’s website with the .net extension in the domain name was updated in 2021, revealing new summer shoes from Ilasio Renzoni to the world.

From 2009 to 2019, the rights to the Renzoni trademark belonged to Daltorg LLC from Primorsky Ussuriysk. In 2022, Emil Mammadov registered a trademark with the same name, but in a different font, but announced that he would use it on textiles.

As an expert in the field of shoe sales told Fontanka, allegedly entrepreneurs in China own the brand, the brand only works on the Russian market with Russian distributors.

You can now find Renzoni shoes on any online clothing store, and on one of them, behind the brand name is attributed in brackets — «Factory China».

El Tempo

From the name El Tempo breathes Spanish heat, in the Spanish origin of shoes, which originated more than 20 years ago, the site of the same name assures. But the connection of the brand with the Iberian Peninsula is not so obvious: the Cypriot company Iberpiel Distribution Limited has owned the trademark since 2001, and extended the patent until 2031, the exclusive rights to it belong to Max-M LLC from the Moscow Region, whose founder is Alexey Mazalov. The production of shoes (at least before the special operation) was located in five countries at all — Spain, Portugal, China, Turkey and Russia.

The company did not respond to Fontanka’s request about where the brand’s shoes are mainly produced in 2022. On Internet marketplaces, Russia and China are listed as manufacturers of shoes El Tempo .

Share

Francesco Donni

The legend of the brand is so convincing that you want to believe in it: the secrets of shoemaking were passed down from generation to generation in an Italian family, where for two centuries the sons were called Francesco. And everything would be fine with the last heir, if not for the girl from Russia, after whom he at 1999 rushed to the country of changeable winds and frosty cold. Russia turned out to be merciful to the native of Florence — his craftsmanship now serves to the glory of the brand, and shoes are sold throughout the country.

Judging by SPARK, Francesco’s arrival in Russia in 1999 coincides with the registration in Moscow Mytishchi of LLC BRIGHT-1999, which owns the rights to the trademark Francesco Donni. The company was founded by Svetlana Sharapova.

Giotto

Brand Giotto , open to the entire Internet space, declares that the production of shoes is located in Moscow and Kaluga, and that boots and shoes from Italian materials have been sewn there for almost 20 years. Pure truth: since 1999, the trademark has been owned by Vladimir Timofeev, the founder and CEO of TVV-GROUP LLC, they also have a website selling shoes Giotto . As things are now with the supply of raw materials from Italy, the company did not respond to Fontanka’s request. Sellers on Internet marketplaces write that shoes are made in Russia.

Palazzo d’Oro

The trademark PALAZZO D’ORO ORO has been owned by Muscovite Gennady Antoshin since 2001 and is valid until 2031. He also owns DIORO LLC, established in 2007 in Moscow, which is engaged in the wholesale trade of footwear. The brand does not have its own website, but you can find shoes of this brand on almost every marketplace on the Internet. In 2019, buyers assured that shoes for this brand were made exactly abroad, and in support of their words they sent photos from packing boxes, where it was written in black and white: “Manufactured by Guangzhou D’Oro Leather Co, LTD, Guangzhou, China” . In Serbia in 2014, they also sewed something. The same is said by sellers on Internet sites — China is indicated by the shoe manufacturer in the characteristics of the goods.

Share

Paolo Conte

The brand Paolo Conte was founded in 2001 by Andrey Rotar, in 2008 he founded Paolo Conte Group of Companies LLC, which sold shoes under the same brand. At the end of 2021, Rotar died, bankruptcy proceedings were introduced against the company in May of this year, but brand shoes are still sold in online stores. The country of origin is China.

Corso Como

Perhaps the most interesting story is that of the Corso Como brand.

In the 1990s, Carla Sozzani, the older sister of the editor-in-chief of Italian Vogue, opened her fashion multi-brand 10 Corso Como in Milan. In May 2013, she was registered as the owner of the brand.

This is what the Italian Corso Como looks like.

Share

In 2005, another Corso Como trademark was registered, the owner was Alexei Kirillov from Mytishchi near Moscow, who also established Corso Retail LLC in 2011, which retailed shoes and leather goods. The company owned a website of the same name with the .com extension.

This is how Mytishchi Corso Como looks like.

Share

In March, Corso Retail was excluded from the register of legal entities due to the inaccuracy of the information provided, since then Alexey Kirillov has been listed on the website as an individual entrepreneur.

Many of the brand’s products are sold on online marketplaces, the country of the brand is Italy, the shoe manufacturer is China and Turkey.

China by 50%

There are more than a dozen names of shoe brands with a foreign flair, but with Russian roots, on sale, one of the owners of Zenden Group, businessman Andrey Pavlov, is sure.

— The bottom line is that a couple of decades ago, the Russian shoe market belonged to Russian entrepreneurs and everyone developed their own brands. There are hundreds and hundreds of them. After the officials began to bring order to the shoe market, the first thing that died was Russian business. Now the market is filled with thousands of Chinese brands that smuggle goods here, counterfeit goods, they own more than 50% of the market,” Andrey Pavlov said.

The quality of footwear produced for Russia abroad, says Pavlov, has been affected by the coronavirus. If earlier in foreign production, as a rule, there were a small number of employees from Russia — technologists, designers — and they controlled all processes, now it is difficult to send an employee even to China due to coronavirus restrictions. Therefore, many goods are made without the control of representatives of Russian companies. And this affects the final result, says the entrepreneur:

— Now no one sets goals for himself to make the quality amazing — shoes quickly go out of fashion, and it’s not a pity to throw away a pair worth 2-3 thousand. Well, with rare exceptions, it will be worn for a couple of seasons.
