Information about Puerto Rico. What country is Puerto Rico?

The baseball team regularly competes in the world championships. More than 70 years ago, Puerto Ricans climbed to the top step of the podium. They won silver and bronze four times.

About Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is the easternmost and smallest of the Greater Antilles, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the south. The Puerto Rico archipelago includes small islands surrounding it, such as Culebra and Vieques to the east and Mona to the west. Mona is a natural park and wildlife sanctuary under government supervision. The total land area, including small islands, is 8,875 sq. km. nine0004

The island of Puerto Rico has an amazing geographic diversity, as about 60% of the island is very hilly. It also has caves, deserts, oceans, rivers and beautiful beaches. There are three distinct physiographic regions: Karst regions, coastal lowlands and mountainous regions.

The mountainous area is formed by the central mountain range, commonly known as the Cordillera Central, which extends inland from Mayagüez to Aibonito and crosses the island from east to west. The highest mountains are Cerro la Punta (1338 m) and Roses (1267 m). The second important physical and geographical feature is the coastal plains, which extend 13-19km inland in the north and 3-13 km in the south. The third important physical and geographical feature is the karst zone in the north. This limestone area is a very attractive area with vast hills covered with sinkholes, caves and limestone cliffs.

Due to its relatively small size and east-west mountain range, Puerto Rico has no major rivers or lakes. The largest river is the Grande de Arecibo, which flows into the northern coast. nine0004

San Juan is the capital and most populous city of Puerto Rico. Today, San Juan is one of the most important ports of Puerto Rico, as well as the industrial, economic, cultural and tourist center of the island.

The history of Puerto Rico began with the settlement of the island by orthoptera between 3000 and 2000 BC. These people are believed to have originated from the Orinoco Valley in South America and migrated from Trinidad and Tobago to Puerto Rico in the Antilles. Other tribes, such as the Arawak Indians and the Saladoids, inhabited the island between 430 BC. and 1000 AD When Christopher Columbus arrived in Puerto Rico in 1493 year, the land was inhabited by the Indians secretly. Columbus claimed that the island belonged to Spain and named it San Juan Bautista, after Saint John the Baptist. Conquistador Juan Ponce de León founded Caparra as the first settlement on the island. He subsequently became the first governor of the colony. After the Spanish-American War in 1898, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States. In 1917, the people of Puerto Rico gained independence from the United States.

Cacti grow in the dry southwest corner of Puerto Rico. Hardwood trees now rare include nutmeg, satin, Spanish elm, and Spanish cedar. nine0004

There are no large wild mammals in Puerto Rico. The mongoose was bred to control rats on sugar cane plantations. There are many iguanas and many small lizards and bats. The island is home to many animals that are not found anywhere else in the world.

Several endemic birds and many migratory birds live here. Birdwatching in Puerto Rico is very easy. Puerto Rico’s most «famous» bird is the Puerto Rican parrot. Hummingbirds abound on the island, so keep your eyes peeled for them. Marine life is extraordinarily rich, including many tropical fish, crabs and corals. The island of Puerto Rico is not well known for its jobs. Since there are not enough jobs for all citizens, foreigners cannot count on employment. Many locals emigrate from the island in search of decent work.

In addition, the standard of living is generally lower than in the US, Europe, or Canada, but the country is not a Third World country in terms of economic growth. nine0004

Immigrants can still compete for jobs in industries and technological development, where skilled workers with good work experience are always needed. The tourism industry is also always in need of fresh, new talent.

The flag of Puerto Rico was developed at the end of the 19th century from the flag of Cuba and symbolizes the Cuban Revolutionary Party. Some changes have been made. The triangle and stripes were painted in different colors. nine0004

As a result of the war between the Spaniards and the Americans in 1898, the American flag was raised over the island. It was the symbol of the state until 1952. After that, the old Cuban flag became the official flag. However, on ceremonial occasions, it is raised only together with the American flag.

Puerto Rico — what country can compete in beauty with this island nation! Looking at photographs of the capital city of San Juan today, you can see how deeply colonial history is inscribed in the life of the city. It was built on the site of the Caparra settlement, founded by Juan Ponce de Leon at the beginning of the 16th century. nine0004

Employment on the island

Puerto Rico is a land of tropical rainforests, mostly wet or dry, with mangrove-covered seashores.

The rainforest is teeming with birds and reptiles. Endangered species such as the Koki frog can be found here. This animal makes a surprisingly loud rattling sound. When a group of these amphibians perform a concert, they can stun people nearby.

In the Guanica dry rainforest you can admire mango groves, waterfalls, the Kamui cave system, colorful limestone peaks and coral reefs. nine0004
