Much of the world wide popularity of Salsa dancing can be attributed to Puerto Rico, and there are hundreds of bars and clubs around the island where you can enjoy either watching or joining in this fabulous dance. Another area worth some particular attention on the island is the El Yunque National Forest which is a lush and natural tropical rainforest. It has the unique distinction of being the only tropical rain forest on US soil. It is full of unusual flora, fauna, mangroves and fascinating wild life. El Yunque National Forest is also a great place to do some bird watching.
If you are lucky, you might even see the protected and rare Puerto Rican Parrot.
Puerto Rico has some of the best beaches in the Caribbean, and the best bit is there are hundreds of picture postcard beaches to choose. There are too many to mention, but the one that stands out is Flamenco Beach as it is widely considered to be one of the best beaches in the world. It is for good reason as it is a stunning stretch of beach with white sands and calm waters.
San Juan is the capital of Puerto Rico, and it is fast being recognized as one North America’s most trendy cities. San Juan has one of the largest fortresses in the Caribbean, and it has some incredibly well-preserved ramparts. It is honoured to be one of the UNESCO world heritage sites. San Juan is an enchanting city which is full of romance, exuberance and culture. The old part of San Juan which is known as Old San Juan is particularly lovely and rich in history with several old forts dating back to the fifth century.
Also, it has fabulous local and designer shops, charming cobblestone streets, brightly colour buildings and incredible restaurants serving the freshest and most exquisite food.
Old San Juan is connected to the main island via three bridges. The city has lovely views of both the Atlantic Ocean and of San Juan Bay. Any visit to Puerto Rico would not be complete without a visit to San Juan.
Puerto Rico has not one but two UNESCO World Heritage sites. The second one is called La Fortaleza and is now the Governor’s Palace. The building is unique as it is the oldest mansion which is still in use in the Western Hemisphere.
If you fancy a day trip, we highly recommend a visit to the island of Vieques. It is just 7 miles off shore. The island of Vieques boasts the world’s most impressive bio luminescent bays. It is a natural wonder of the world with its blue and green lights which are formed by micro-organisms. An excellent way to explore the bay is by kayak, and our concierge team at Exceptional Villas will be happy to arrange it. The only time it is not possible to do a tour is during the days of the full moon. Vieques has many stunning and pristine white sand beaches as well as some beautiful fishing village.
A boat trip at night to see the bay is especially magical.
Puerto Rico is a melting pot of nationalities and is also considered to be one of the friendliest islands in the Caribbean. Puerto Rico has it all, and there are few destinations that can beat the birth place of the Pina Colada!
Getting to Puerto Rico is very easy. There are direct flights from more than ten major US cities as well as access from many European cities such as Frankfurt, London and Madrid.
