Where to stay in puerto rico 2022: The BEST Spots in 2022

Where to Stay in Puerto Rico

An unincorporated U.S. territory, Puerto Rico is one of the most exquisite islands among the Caribbean and is characterized by its diverse landscape that comprises lofty mountains, gushing waterfalls, plush tropical rainforest, and of course, the stunning Caribbean Sea. However, its landscape is not the only distinct feature of Puerto Rico. In fact, the culture in this paradisiacal island is a great mixture of Spanish, African, U.S., and Taíno ethnicity.

With a bustling capital city and a close proximity to mainland United States, Puerto Rico has been a prominent tourism hotspot for decades. While San Juan is definitely at the core of all tourist activities, Puerto Rico also comprises several smaller islands that are worth exploring.

Let us explore the island jewel in detail so you can plan where to stay in Puerto Rico during your visit.

Paradores

Not to be confused with the Spanish parador system (luxury hotels in converted historic buildings in heritage cities), in Puerto Rico, a parador is classified as a “country inn” that meets the requirements of the government’s Paradores Puertorriqueños program. To qualify for parador status, the hotel must be located outside the San Juan Metro area, have between seven and 75 rooms, be considered of historic importance and be managed by a resident owner.

Airbnbs

Popular with longer-visiting travelers, digital nomads and families, Puerto Rico’s growing Airbnb sector—over 10,000 listings—extends the length and breadth of the island. From basic rooms in the Metro area to rainforest treehouses, rustic mountain farms and luxury oceanside villas, there’s an impressive variety of accommodations for every budget. The priciest properties are often located in gorgeous settings, such as Vieques and Culebra, or deliver breathtaking mountain top views. Most likely, you’ll need a car to access properties outside the Metro area.

Room Rates and Availability

As Puerto Rico has become one of the Caribbean’s most sought after destinations—and with a post-pandemic surge in demand overall—room rates have risen sharply. During peak holidays and on weekends, plan to book well in advance. Generally, you won’t have trouble finding a room, the rates just may not be palatable. The best times to find discounted rates are from September to November and from late April through June. Rates also tend to be higher during the two peak seasons (December to early May and July/August), while rates between September and November are usually the lowest.

Not sure which region to choose? We get it. There are so many great options. Use this map (and save it!) to locate each accommodation. We’ve color-coded it by type (Black: Hotel, Purple: Airbnb, and Orange: Parador) and only included public Airbnb’s locations (some don’t share it until you book them).

Find the Best Puerto Rico Retirement Cities

If you’re planning to retire in Puerto Rico, take the time to explore some of the cities and towns that populate this small but diverse island before deciding where to stay. Its best communities have a relaxed atmosphere, a safe environment, many restaurants and shops, convenient services, good medical care and a variety of living options. (For more on retirement planning in Puerto Rico, see Retirement in Puerto Rico with $200,000 in Savings, an Overseas Retirement Plan, and What Costs Overseas Overseas?)

Here is an example of options:

San Juan

The sprawling city of San Juan has many attractive neighborhoods, and some of them cannot be safely set foot. If you don’t mind tourists, try Old San Juan for its fine Spanish architecture and narrow cobbled streets. Miramar is an upscale residential enclave that boasts two marinas. Condado , the epitome of chic in the Jazz Age, is in its final revival. Ocean Park claims to be the most beautiful beach in San Juan and has many suburban homes along tree-lined streets.

Guaynabo

Often crowded in San Juan, the adjoining seaside town of Guaynabo was the site of Puerto Rico’s first Spanish colony, settled in 1508 and ruled by Juan Ponce de León. It is now known for its good shops and restaurants, modern medical facilities and gated communities. A bonus for residents is the many festivals organized there throughout the year.

Palmas del Mar

On the east coast of Puerto Rico, Palmas del Mar has become a favorite among those moving from the US mainland. This is actually part of the city of Humacao, but it has earned a reputation as its destination among tourists and residents alike. This gigantic gated resort community includes two golf courses, tennis courts and an equestrian center, not to mention a wide selection of oceanfront homes.

Mayaguz

Among the towns that roam the west coast of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez and the smaller towns of Rincón and Cabo Rojo are all attractive options. If you are looking for a quieter environment, beach living and an eco-friendly lifestyle, you can find it here.

Cayey

Significantly lower housing prices and a cooler climate can be found less than 40 miles from San Juan in Cayey, a small town in Puerto Rico’s central mountains. Surrounded by tobacco fields, sugar plantations and chicken farms, Cayi boasts a small college and affiliate of the University of Puerto Rico.

Culebra

If you want the country to live in a tropical paradise, try Culebra, an island 17 miles east of mainland Puerto Rico and 12 miles west of St. Thomas. Much of the island and the islets that surround it have been designated a nature reserve and protected by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, while most of the 2,000 people live in the capital, Dewey. Twice daily ferry service and a small airport provide access to the rest of the world.

The Bottom Line

If you crave big city life, San Juan is your only choice in Puerto Rico and there are many attractive options within the urban sprawl. Elsewhere on the island you will find many small but livable towns and resort communities. You don’t have to worry about being too isolated: the entire island is only 100 miles across and about 35 miles wide.
