Refunds and cancellations

If you wish to cancel or change a holiday that you’ve booked, you should contact your travel company. The question of refunds and cancellations is a matter for you and your travel company. Travel companies make their own decisions about whether or not to offer customers a refund. Many of them use our travel advice to help them reach these decisions, but we do not instruct travel companies on when they can or can’t offer a refund to their customers.

Safety and security — USA travel advice

Crime

Take sensible precautions to protect yourself and your property against petty crime. Don’t leave passports in rental cars, especially in the boot, as there have been a high number of thefts by gangs targeting the vehicles of those who appear to be tourists.

Violent crime, including gun crime, rarely involves tourists, but you should take care when travelling in unfamiliar areas. Avoid walking through less travelled areas alone, especially at night. You can find public advisories and information about recent incidents, such as the Sunset Park subway attack in Brooklyn, New York on 12th April 2022, on the websites of local law enforcement authorities.

Incidents of mass shooting can occur, but account for a very small percentage of homicide deaths. Read the US Department of Homeland Security website, which has published advice on what to do in such an incident.

Research your destination before travelling, be vigilant, and follow the advice of local authorities. Crime associated with the illegal drugs trade is a major issue in Mexican states bordering Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. Some foreign nationals have been among the victims of crime in the border regions, but there is no evidence to suggest they have been targeted because of their nationality.

Road travel

Traffic laws vary from state to state. If you’re planning to drive in the USA, check the driving rules in the state(s) you’ll be visiting. In most states, a full UK driving licence is sufficient (provisional licences aren’t accepted). However, some states may also require an International Driving Permit (IDP), which you can get over the counter at the Post Office. The USA doesn’t issue IDPs to foreign visitors, so you’ll need to get one before you travel. If you’re hiring a vehicle, check requirements with your rental company before you travel.

Check the weather conditions before embarking on a long journey, particularly in mountainous and isolated areas where there is increased likelihood of snowfall, or in dry desert areas where you may need extra water and petrol stations could be scarce. Do not sleep in your car by the roadside or in rest areas and avoid leaving any items on display in your car. Try to stay on main roads and use well-lit car parks. If you’re involved in a collision while driving, indicate to the other driver to follow you to a public place and call 911 for the police.

Petrol stations that do not display the price of fuel usually charge considerably more than the national average for a gallon of fuel. They’re often found close to tourist destinations and airports, and notoriously near to Orlando International Airport.

In 2019 there were 36,120 road deaths in the USA (source: Department for Transport). This equates to 11 road deaths per 100,000 of population and compares to the UK average of 2.7 road deaths per 100,000 of population in 2019.

Air travel

Before you travel, check the security measures you’re likely to face at the airport on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website. The TSA has a helpline number to help passengers with disabilities and medical conditions before they fly.

Don’t make flippant remarks about bombs or terrorism, especially when passing through US airports.

Safety concerns have been raised about INSEL Air. The UK Government, like other governments (including the USA and The Netherlands), prohibits its staff from using the airline while safety checks are being carried out.

Safety rules at public venues, such as theme parks and other tourist attractions, may vary from state to state.

Population

Windsor is a multinational city, so on its streets you can meet representatives of almost all nationalities of the world. If you study the ethnic composition of the city, you can see that about 70% of local residents are native British, while 30% are representatives of national minorities. The most widely represented in this group is the Negroid race (11%), which includes Africans, Caribbeans and other nationalities. About 10% of the population are from South Asia and the Middle East, 3% — Irish, 6% — other nationalities.

City history

Windsor is first mentioned in history in the pages of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. At that time the name of the city was New Windsor, which comes from the Old English phrase «crooked river bank». In 1170, the famous Windsor Castle was built here, and 2 years later a bridge was built across the Thames, which connected Windsor with neighboring Eton. New Windsor enjoyed royal privileges, was the main city in the county, and in 1277 received the official status of the royal bureau.

During the Middle Ages, New Windsor was one of the 50 richest cities in England. Trade was actively conducted here, the castle was rebuilt and expanded, the city flourished. The end of the 15th century was a period of mass pilgrimage for people who traveled to New Windsor to visit the tomb of Henry VI and a fragment of the True Cross.

10 years after the Reformation, New Windsor is actively built up, but at the same time it is a rather poor and unattractive city. During the English Revolution, Colonel Venn is based here, and after his departure, the city is occupied by the Roundheads. In 1649Charles I was buried in New Windsor, and with the advent of Charles II, the situation in the city did not change. Decline and ruin continued until the beginning of the 19th century.

In 1778 the kings returned to New Windsor, and in 1840 Windsor Castle became the residence of Queen Victoria. The new status contributed to the rapid construction of the railway and the rapid development of the city. It turns into the center of the empire and attracts the heads of many European states. In 1974, the city receives its modern name — Windsor, and the royal castle becomes the record holder for the time that the owners spend on their estate.

Today Windsor is one of the most popular tourist cities in the UK. Peace and tranquility reign here, and travelers annually come here from all over the world.

Best time to go to Windsor

The ideal time to visit Windsor is the summer months. At this time, warm and, as a rule, dry weather sets in the city, which allows you to walk a lot, enjoying the warmth. The air temperature stays within +20°C, sometimes rising to +25 and even up to +30°C. At the same time, it should be borne in mind that most tourists come to Windsor in summer, so queues and crowds cannot be avoided.

With the onset of autumn, the weather gradually deteriorates, rainy and cloudy days await tourists in Windsor. The air temperature drops to + 10 ° C, and because of the dampness, walks become less comfortable. The same goes for the winter months when the temperature drops to -5°C and the days become much shorter. In the spring, Windsor comes alive, especially in city parks. It is very beautiful here at this time of the year.

Visit Windsor Castle — the current residence of the Queen of England. It is for the sake of visiting this castle that tourists most often come to Windsor. It is considered the largest and most beautiful in the UK and impresses guests with its magnificence. Spacious halls, royal apartments, the Throne Room — in such an atmosphere it is easy to feel like members of the royal family.
Visit St. George’s Chapel. The shrine can certainly be called one of the main attractions on the territory of Windsor Castle. At first glance, the Gothic architecture is striking — the Chapel looks majestic and very impressive. It is here that 35 members of the royal family are buried.
Be amazed by the fabulous Queen Mary’s Dollhouse. Perhaps this is the most amazing attraction that can be seen in Windsor Castle. The unique doll house consists of more than 40 rooms, it has 2 elevators, furniture, appliances, electric lighting and even water supply. By the way, Queen Mary received this miniature masterpiece at the age of 57!
Walk along the shady alleys of the Royal Park. The beauty of the park, which is located next to Windsor Castle, is impressive. It is especially pleasant to realize that the queen herself walks along these same paths. Administrative-territorial division of York
