Hix Island House – Hotel Review
Reviewed by Kathleen Squires
What stands out to you about this place as you arrive?
Set on 13 acres of fruit trees, whispering pines, and palms, on Vieques, Hix Island House consists of five geometric concrete buildings—triangular, round, square, and rectangular—that fit into the natural surroundings despite their modernist design. A hilltop location in the center of the island affords views of the ocean in all directions. The very definition of seclusion—there are no phones, TV, or Wifi—the property serves as the ultimate place to hole up and opt out.
What’s the backstory?
An eco-friendly pioneer on the island, Hix Island House opened in 2000. Toronto architect John Hix, inspired by the Japanese concept of Wabi-sabi, built the hotel with conservation and responsible living at the forefront of the design. Solar and wind energy power each building, and cisterns capture rainwater.
So what are the rooms like?
This tropical home-away-from-home has 19 huge, loft-like, polished-concrete spaces, all austerely decorated with wood furnishings and small pops of color. All but two have outdoor showers; all have kitchens, patios or terraces, and garden or ocean views.
Is there a charge for Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi is complimentary, but the catch is it’s only available near the front desk,.
Drinking and dining—what are we looking at?
Management stocks kitchens with breakfast items (eggs, cereal, juice, coffee and tea, milk, jam, fruit, and homemade bread) daily.
What type of travelers come here?
Conservationist conversationalists taking some me-time.
What’s the surrounding area like?
Your neighbors are coquis, hummingbirds, and trade winds. A 25-minute flight from San Juan, or a seven-minute flight or 90-minute ferry ride from Ceiba, Vieques is known for its beautiful beaches, bioluminescent bay, and galloping wild horses. Hix Island House is a 10-minute drive to the town of Esperanza and beaches, 20 minutes from Isabel Segundo, seven minutes from the airport, and 20 minutes from ferry terminal.
Any other hotel features worth noting?
A 50-foot long pool with panoramic views provides a central point. Yoga classes are offered in a scenic pavilion for guests and non-guests. There’s no A/C throughout the houses, but their hilly location and abundance of greenery draws cool breezes. The hotel supplies chairs, towels, and snorkeling equipment for beach trips. Sprawling La Casona at the top of the property is available to rent for events (up to 80 people).
Bottom line: why are we picking this hotel?
This is a well-designed, modernist retreat that’s right for anyone looking to get off the grid—and off Instagram—for a few days.
Malecón House Vacation in Vieques, Puerto Rico
Vieques is a Caribbean Island 6 miles off the east coast of Puerto Rico. Isla de Vieques is largest of the Puerto Rico islands. Vieques hold about 10,000 residents knows as Viequenses. It is about 21 miles long and 5 miles wide. There are no traffic lights in Vieques. Narrow roads lead to unspoiled beaches, colorful towns, and breathtaking scenes.
Vieques is known for it’s secluded beaches, snorkeling, Bioluminescent Bay (the brightest in the world), wild horses, and the largest wildlife refuge in the Caribbean, the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge.
Malecon House: A Vieques Boutique Hotel
Malecon House, located on the Caribbean boardwalk in the seaside village of Esperanza, has 13 guestrooms directly across from Esperanza Bay. A short walk will bring you to the towns beach bars, restaurants, boutiques, ocean sports, and picturesque beaches. Some rooms have private balconies to enjoy the view of the Esperanza (“hope” in English) Bay while others enjoy a garden view. Malecon House has a small pool to sunbath in or near, a breakfast of baked local good and fruit, and beach kits of chairs, coolers and umbrellas.
Vieques Tours
Walk to Sun Bay, Media Luna Beach, and Navio Beach.
Sun Bay, a 20 minute walk from Esperanza, is a palm tree lined sandy beach with areas of waves at one end and tranquil water on the other. Horses stroll around the grassy area of the beach. The calm waters and soft sand, bathrooms, food, and lifeguards make Sun Bay a great family beach. Walk another 10 minutes to arrive at Media Luna Beach, a shallow, calm, powdery sand covered beach. Continue another 10 minutes to Navio Beach, a beach full of fun waves for boogie boarding and a cave for exploring.

Bioluminescent Mosquito Bay
Puerto Mosquito, Mosquito Bay, is located on the southern shore of Vieques. Mosquito Bay is recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records 2008 as the brightest recorded. This is best explored in the New Moon so be sure to check the moon calendar before making your trip. The dinoflagellates, Pyrodinium bahamense, in Mosquito Bay are responsible for the bright lights seen when touched. The bay being shallow with a narrow mouth and lined with mangroves, it is perfect for keeping the light producing plankton trapped. Book a kayaking trip with a glass bottom boat for a truly amazing experience.
Snorkeling
Almost every beach of Vieques is good for snorkeling so carry your equipment with you. Soft sand leads out to shallow water where you will see patch reefs, sting rays, reef fish, sea urchins, manatees, and nurse sharks. Some popular snorkeling sites include Esperanza Beach, La Chiva which is a breeding ground for many fish, and Secret Beach which has great visibility and a diversity of sea life. JAK water sports offers a kayaking trip to Tres Palmitas on the Vieques National Wildlife Reserve. The trip starts in Puerto Ferro bay where you will learn about the mangrove ecosystem and some of the features of the bay, following by paddling out to the mouth of the bay where you will snorkel along a fringe coral reef. Refreshments and snacks on a secluded beach are included.
Beach/Trail Rides on Horseback
Esperanza Riding Company offers a guided 2 hour horseback riding tour of the Esperanza area. The tour rides through hills, open meadows, woods, river bottoms and 2 secluded beaches. The tour concludes with a walk through the waterfront pasture overlooking the south side of the island. A group trail ride is $80/person.

We stayed at the Malecon House earlier this year and it was a truly memorable stay. The staff were all amazing, with Christy the general manager making sure we had a one of a kind experience. We wanted to take her home with us! I intended to write this review when we first returned from a holiday in Vieques at the end of January and time just slipped by. But it just goes to show how memorable the experience was, that I’m here, months after it happened, and I still remember it fondly. Feel free to stay there. We stayed in one of the deluxe ocean view rooms (ocean view on the left). nine0005

We have just returned from an amazing week at the Malecon House that exceeded our expectations. Our ocean view room was perfect. It was beautifully decorated and immaculate. The grounds are very well maintained and the lovely pool with waterfalls was a great way to end a day at the beach. No request or question was too much trouble for the staff at Malecon House, providing us with sun loungers, umbrellas and ice coolers every morning. We felt we were so well taken care of and their white glove service is unmatched anywhere we have stayed before. nine0005

The Malecon house was the most beautiful place on the island. The service from the staff was the best I have ever received in a hotel. Highly recommend staying here. They were incredible. The rooms were very clean. Christy, the manager, was so amazing and so helpful in every way. She definitely went the extra mile to make our trip perfect. Did I mention great staff and service? I would give them 5 out of 5 stars. 😀
And Tyson is the bomb. He let us rent his car while he was on the island because all the rent payments had disappeared. He was amazing and doesn’t even work for Malecon House.

Had an incredible time in Vieques thanks to the phenomenal staff at Malecon House. Shout out to Nicky and Christy who went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and set us up for rides, tours etc. Everything we needed they got for us. Another shout out to Tyson who drove us around became our best island buddy 🙂
About staying here:
They have coolers, deckchairs, tubes, umbrellas, everything you need for a day at the beach. There are beach swings right across the road (sunset photo!) Restaurants and a grocery store half a mile away. Sugar Cane Pier down the street for a nice dip in crystal blue water. Sun Bay is a walking beach.
Hot Tip: Rent a golf cart to explore the island. We didn’t, but it was a blessing because we relaxed with Tyson.
Bonus for some people: Ability to switch off completely. Limited cellular service and Wi-Fi availability throughout the island. No one walks or texts here lol. nine0005

This mini-resort is a kind of resort. It is beautifully landscaped with a quiet waterfall, swimming pool, rooftop living area to watch sunrises and sunsets, breakfast on the terrace. The rooms are clean and nicely decorated. The staff is friendly and helpful. We are located just a few steps from the beach and located to several delicious restaurants. We are also close to pick up a site for a biopsy tour. nine0005

Malecon house is a real find! The hotel is beautiful, amazing staff and the room was amazing. My husband and I visited in November 2019 for our honeymoon. We loved everything about Vieques and understandably the Malecon House is the best boutique hotel on the island. We stayed in room 11 & enjoy the canopy Caribbean Sea view and our own private patio. The entire hotel was spotlessly clean and every day we can return to a Clean room. There were tons of amazing extras there too — like a ‘bar’ where you can get drinks and snacks 24 hours a day, a gorgeous pool that was perfect for cooling off after a day at the beach, laundry services and tons of towels. beach things to use. Every staff member we came in contact with was truly wonderful. Although it was technically off-season, there are still many restaurants open (with no crowds and with more opening every night of our 4 day stay) and the weather was perfect. I highly recommend staying here! nine0005

My husband and I spent 4 days at the Malecon house and absolutely loved it! Our room was nice, clean and had a big balcony. We took the golf cart off the road and drove around exploring the amazing beaches of Vieques. The staff at the Malecon House were very friendly and recommended some of the restaurants in the Esperanza area. There was a continental breakfast from 8:00 to 10:00. We will definitely be back! nine0005

A wonderful place to stay in Esperanza and I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Vieques. The staff was amazing, delicious and healthy breakfast every morning, everything you need for the beach. The owners, Fred and Tammy were so accommodating. They were great with my 3 year old son, he couldn’t wait to see them every morning for breakfast. My family really enjoyed every minute and can’t wait to come back again! nine0005

Malecon House is the perfect place to stay in Esperanza. We absolutely loved our time there and appreciated all the amenities included in the room rate with beach towels for guests to enjoy the continental breakfast. The room was exceptionally clean and designed with all guest needs in mind. Not only is the accommodation beautiful, but the staff, especially the general manager, Daphne, were all welcoming and friendly. This hotel has a wonderful friendly and relaxing atmosphere that our family of four (including two teenagers) felt at home and was able to quickly recover from. The hotel does not have a restaurant on site, but there are a variety of restaurants within walking distance and we had fantastic food in them all (bananas, duffies, lazy jacks, and trade winds). This location is ideal for visiting all the beautiful beaches on the south coast of Vieques or simply enjoying the beautiful views of the Malecon. nine0005
