On the other hand, how many times in your life have you had a truly memorable stay at a Starwood or Marriott hotel? In doing so, I mention the most “inspiring” of the major chains. It is unlikely that you will remember anything in Homewood Suites, Ibis or Novotel.

In this article I will talk about a group of hotels that is one of the most inspiring in the world. At the same time

almost no one knows about it, and even more so no one writes about it.

That’s what it’s all about.

Paradores is a chain of hotels located in Spain (with only one Portuguese exception) and owned by the state.

Most of the paradors are occupied by historical buildings that are objects of cultural heritage — medieval castles, palaces, monasteries. nine0013

I must say right away that not all paradors are ultra-luxury hotels. There are examples in the industry of more luxurious, modern hotels in restored historic buildings. What makes parador trips a unique experience is their authenticity .

It is difficult to explain in words… I have written many times that it is important for me to feel the reality of the place. Not just to pay money and receive appropriate services for it, but to experience the moment wow . Perhaps this is the difference between tourism and travel.

Sitting all alone and in complete silence on a summer night in the courtyard of a medieval castle and watching the shadows of storks flying overhead is just an example of such a moment.

If such a comparison makes sense, then the difference between W or Shangri-La and a Spanish parador on an emotional level is about the same as between a beautiful whore and just a beloved woman 😉

If priceless moments are more important to you than modest numbers or a weak signal WiFi that can’t get through thick stone walls (here they are, helpless modern technology!), then you will be delighted with paradors! nine0013

There are 95 paradors in Spain plus 1 in Portugal.

They are divided into 3 categories: Esentia , Civia and Naturia .

Naturia is defined as paradors located in the lap of nature
Civia — urban paradors
Esentia — historical and monumental paradors … which does not at all contradict the fact that they can be located in a large city or in the lap of nature.

Paradors are also classified according to the number of stars. Most paradors have four stars. We know that the number of stars characterizes only the formal indicators of the hotel, such as the presence of a gym or a conference room, so I would not pay attention to this. Stars only matter for scoring — more on that later. nine0013

Paradors can be booked both on the official website and on traditional third-party platforms. In terms of price, I did not notice any difference at all, so I booked on the site parador.es.

The possibility of obtaining loyalty points depends on where you book your stay, and more on this later in the corresponding section.

The official site of the paradors looks as old as some of the buildings themselves, and slows down just like the WiFi in them 😉 However, that’s why I still recommend being patient and making a reservation on it. nine0013

I usually try not to eat in hotels as I am never satisfied. The mismatch of pretentious marketing and high expectations with reality, coupled with unjustified prices, makes me look for food elsewhere.

In Spain, just go out into the city or the countryside and you will have plenty of options to eat an economical three-course menu with a bottle of wine for 8-12 euros, or head to a tapear .

But that’s why I still strongly recommend considering the half board option.

The Parador experience is not just about the room you stay in. Moreover, the number itself will often be far from perfect or completely spartan.

The Parador is a complete experience, including dinner in the medieval stables of the monastery, in the former church or in the courtyard of the ducal palace. Yes, there are atmospheric restaurants in the paradors! I recommend overpaying for dinner, not because of the dinner itself, but because of the indescribable atmosphere that will undoubtedly surround it. Here you will see! nine0013

If we talk about the quality of gastronomy, apart from everything that surrounds it, then in my paradors it was good or very good, although not outstanding. I know that many people enjoy the very fact of exclusivity, so it is worth mentioning that the chefs in each parador are carefully selected and trained to emphasize the characteristics of the cuisine of this region and its seasonality.

But the presentation of dishes will always be on top!

In terms of prices, a three-course set menu (excluding drinks) costs about 30-40 euros in the parador. It is very expensive by Spanish standards! Therefore, choose Gastro Pack, it will be more economical. nine0013

Interestingly, on the day of departure, you will be offered a voucher with a 15% discount for lunch or dinner in any parador on the same day. So if your next parador doesn’t include dinner, at least you can take advantage of this small discount. Or just stop for lunch at any parador along the way.

Does it make sense to pay separately for breakfast if you still decide not to choose half board? Mmm…

Breakfasts in each of the paradors include dishes from this province, so to a certain extent this is also a cultural experience. On the other hand, their cost is about 15-20 euros, which is again incredibly expensive by Spanish standards, and by universal standards. nine0013

Dos mejor que una

This default rate includes breakfast and a 25% discount compared to one night. Good value if you want to spend more time in the parador and take your time to explore the area.

Tarjeta 5 nights

This offer is a 5 night pass at a fixed price of €575, which equates to €115 per night. Nights can be used throughout the calendar year in ~~any~~ almost any parador. nine0013

The rate includes accommodation and breakfast for two people, as well as a 20% discount on the set menu at the parador restaurant.

If you’re planning on staying in a parador often throughout the year, this could be a great deal! Surely there will be cases when in monetary terms any of the paradors you are interested in will cost more than 115 €.

Of course, this offer has some limitations:

Card nights cannot be used during high season. In 2017 it is Semana Santa (from 12 to 16 April), as well as the periods from 28 April to 1 May and from 5 to 10 December.
The rest of the time, the availability of nights on the map is also regulated by paradors. However, if there are no available nights, you can still use one night by paying the difference between €115 and the current rate for the respective stay. At least it’s an option if the year ends and you need to use the rest of the night urgently.
Some paradors charge extra per night when using this card: 4 paradors throughout the year and 14 paradors from April to October. nine0004

Tariff for pilgrims

If you still don’t understand what I’m talking about, then let me make a small digression.

This is the famous Camino de Santiago , a pilgrimage route through Spain towards Santiago de Compostela. Camino de Santiago has many variants, so there is a good chance that sooner or later it will pass through a parador. nine0013

I have made this pilgrimage three times and the first Camino de Santiago was by far the best experience of my life. There is so much beauty in Camino de Santiago that you can talk about it for hours; however, this is beyond the scope of my site.

One of its charms is that it is democratic. Everyone goes this way as he can and wants.

Someone does it on foot, someone on a bicycle, someone on horseback. Someone goes without stopping for several months, someone distributes it into small segments of several days or weeks. Some prefer to sleep at albergues (a network of hostels organized and maintained by a religious brotherhood), someone in more comfortable hotels, which, fortunately, can be found in almost every Spanish village.

Personally, I preferred to combine both. I liked albergues for unforgettable evenings with fellow pilgrims, but didn’t like nights in a sleeping bag and not always hygienic bathrooms. From time to time I wanted to sleep in a good bed and take a warm shower.

To use the special fare for pilgrims, you need to present compostela — a book in which the pilgrim stamps himself as he travels: in hotels, churches, cafes . .. This is how you prove in the parador that you did not just stop by here to use low price 🙂

This rate includes a 15% discount on accommodation and breakfast, a 10% discount in the restaurant and parador cafe, and a special “pilgrim set menu” for 15 €.

Everything is obvious here. Paradores offer a 10% discount on room and breakfast if one of the travelers is 55 or older. At the same time, another guest staying in the same room can also receive points. In other words, you can book a room in your own name as long as there is at least one person over 55 living in it. And get points yourself 😉

Escapada joven: discount for those under 30

Youth also has its advantages in paradors: a 15% discount on accommodation and 30% on breakfast.

Paradors and points/miles

Good news for those who like to benefit from loyalty: even overnight in the monastery you will collect points!

There are two ways to earn points: Amigos de Paradores’ own program and Iberia Plus.

You can read the complete terms and conditions of the Amigos program here . Here are her highlights:

This is a cash program, meaning the guest earns points based on the amount spent: 1 point for every €3 spent on the room itself and in the restaurant, and 1 point for every €12 spent on extras such as the spa.
The program has only one status level — Circulo . It is given to those who have collected 2,500 Amigos points within two years. Simple arithmetic shows that for this you need to leave a lot of money in the paradors. I’m not even sure that some marquis who lived in the Middle Ages in the palace, which is now occupied by the parador, could get a Circulo card 😉 Well, The benefits of this status are quite small: free breakfast and free parking, and without the possibility of reserving it in advance.
Points are valid for 24 months. Moreover, if there has been no activity in the account for 24 months, then all points are burned out.
Points can only be used for own stays in the Paradors. Oops.

There is no price table for premium nights (is it a Delta influence?), so you have to search and look at the prices every time. nine0013

As an example, a standard room in the Parador de Santiago de Compostela — the most exclusive parador of the chain — costs from 515 points, and a suite from 1560 points (at least this is the lowest price I found …)

As you can see , if we take the average cost of living in paradors for 100 — 150 €, then to get one standard premium you need to spend about 1500 €. Moreover, the rates expressed in money for standard rooms of even the most exclusive parador are quite moderate. Does it make sense to spend 515 points on a number that costs 142 € for money? nine0013

In general, it seems to me that it is only possible to use the program if you literally “live” in paradors. (I wonder if Charles V used it?)

The Amigos program offers a weak value . And it’s not like it makes sense for paradors to go out of their way to encourage loyalty. Still, this is an exclusive segment!

The second option is Iberia Plus.

I think it goes without saying that the versatility of the Iberia Plus air carriers is incommensurably higher. In addition to being just as good at spending it on a stay in a parador (albeit at a hefty price), they have hundreds of uses, including transfers to British Airways flights. nine0013

I don’t consider Avios to be such a valuable currency, but if the choice is between Amigos and Iberia Plus, then I tend to the second option.

I don’t know how to determine the rate, but in my case all the paradors were booked at a promo rate. It’s not that I was surprised 😉

In short, only Amigos points can be earned when booking on the official website of the Paradores. Exceptions are tariffs available both on the official website and on third-party platforms.

To receive Iberia Plus points, you need to either book a standard rate on the Parador website that does not require an Amigos account and is available on third-party sites,
, or book a stay on a third-party site.

In practice, I have been awarded points in Iberia Plus, even if it was contrary to the above rule, but for the most recent stays I have not been able to achieve this yet. nine0013

Well, let’s take it philosophically. Again, I emphasize that the value of paradors is in the paradors themselves, and not in loyalty points.

What to be prepared for in a parador, and some critique
Just to reiterate: Paradors are some of the most inspiring hotels in the world. It is impossible not to enjoy parador trips. nine0013

However, it is worth keeping in mind some everyday issues.

Parador is not a luxury in the usual sense
I can call the buildings themselves luxurious, in which some paradors are located. Many of them are simply jaw dropping. They are maintained in a luxurious condition. They are kept luxuriously clean. The presentation of dishes in restaurants is luxurious.

But the numbers themselves can be more than modest. Manage your expectations!

WiFi
If this factor is important to you, I recommend having your own internet rather than relying solely on the parador’s network. So far, I’ve only had one parador on my list, with Internet quality that matches what we’re used to in traditional chain hotels.

Accessories
In this aspect, the paradors clearly have much to strive for. Slippers are not provided in the rooms, which would be helpful as parador floors are cold. There is no facilities for making tea/coffee. Bath accessories are only the most basic, and not of very high quality. nine0013

Late check-out
Since the paradors do not have a status program per se, none of the guests have a late check-out benefit. However, guests are encouraged to extend their stay (in some hotels even until 18:00!), either by paying €30 or by dining at the parador restaurant on the day of departure. It seems to me that this is a generous offer, especially since there is no limit on the minimum amount of spending in a restaurant.

Menu
Parador restaurants have a cool, salivating menu, but it doesn’t change on a daily basis. If you live in a parador for several days in a row, the gastronomic experience will get a little more boring from one day to the next. nine0013

Interesting facts

The very first parador of the network is Parador de Gredos , which was opened in 1928. Outwardly, it looks rather modest and unattractive, but this region is one of the most exciting in Spain.

The latest paradors — Parador de Lleida and Parador Costa da Morte . The last one was opened in early 2021. And here is my review of the parador in Lleida.

The most iconic and luxurious parador of the chain is Parador de Santiago de Compostela . It is considered the oldest continuously operating hotel in the world. To experience a little bit of the magic of this parador, it is not at all necessary to stay in it for the night. Pilgrims on the path Camino de Santiago who have completed their trip, upon presentation of the appropriate certificate, can dine free of charge in the service kitchen. I remember very well my lunch at the back of this parador 😉

The only parador located outside of Spain is the Parador Casa da Ínsua that has “wormed its way” into neighboring Portugal. One of the few five-star paradors of the network looks just cool!
