Window Purim in Hebron — STMEGI
Everyone knows the noisy and cheerful holiday of Purim. The solemnly decorated scroll of Queen Esther is read. Carnival costumes are taken out, whistles and beaters sound, music plays, treats are prepared! There are so many kings of Ahasuerus, Amans and Mordechais walking and wandering the streets that it is enough for a good hundred performances-Purimshpils! The Jews rejoice, celebrating the day of deliverance from death at the slander of the villain.
Anti-Semites radiate hatred, commemorating the spirit of evil — it would be our will, we would show you Purim! But God is a shield to His people.
nine0003
However, in the old days, when Jews were persecuted everywhere, communities often celebrated a local, small Purim. And behind each such holiday there is a magical story.
So in Hebron, before the expulsion of the Jews from there, already in the 20th century close to us, such a holiday was celebrated — Purim Window, which, according to the Jewish calendar, is the 14th Tevet.
This was the case in the Ottoman Empire. Jerusalem, Hebron, the entire Holy Land were in Turkish citizenship. The Jews of Hebron lived neither shaky nor rolls, it happened even worse. There is a great shrine in the city — a cave with the remains of the Patriarchs. But the Jews are barred from going there — long ago, Muslim rulers introduced a rule: a person from the Chosen People can climb the stairs to the cave only seven steps and pray there. They even posted a guard!
nine0003
Morals in the state of the Turks were severe. At the beginning of the 19th century, the slave trade was still in full swing there! Not serfs, as in Russia (they had some, but no rights), but abducted and deprived of their freedom people! Jews were also among the unfortunate.
Somehow, messengers from Jerusalem arrived in Hebron, collecting «pidyon shvuim» (funds for the ransom of fellow tribesmen). The community of Hebron was offered to collect five thousand local gold coins — gourush.
nine0003
The elders of Hebron knew that if the community strained its forces and unleashed the moshna, such a sum could be collected. But, people, have mercy, we have enough problems and requisitions here too!
And in general, charity begins with neighbors! And who are those whom you want to redeem? Do we know them? The people supported their elders. Nobody objected.
The elders got carried away, trying to bring down the amount of the donation, and the messengers stood their ground. The ransom money is a great service to G-d. And if you do not understand this, then may God help you to understand. With that they left.
nine0003
Quite a bit of time passed before the envoys left Hebron, and a new pasha steward was appointed to the Damascus eyalet (a region that included Hebron). And that Pasha was an inveterate anti-Semite.
Only having established himself in power, he immediately issued new decrees on exactions, and money flowed from Jewish pockets into his treasury. And since the new ruler did not allow unrest, and sent everything that was necessary to Istanbul, the Sublime Port through her fingers looked at his notions.
nine0003
However, even this was not enough for Pasha. He was an educated man, knew European languages and, reading historical chronicles, paid special attention to how Jews were treated in Europe. He really liked the idea of imposing a huge contribution on the entire community under pain of death, and taking some of the elders hostage — let the Jews do their best for them and themselves!
And so he summoned all the elders to him. They stand, neither alive nor dead, listening to the voice of the herald:
nine0003
“Assign to the Jews of Hebron a ransom of 50,000 gurushes, which are to be collected a week. The Jews will not manage — death to them and ruin. And take half of the elders as hostages!”
Half of the elders, as they were in ceremonial clothes, were sent to the zindan, and half to collect money.
It was then that both the elders and ordinary people remembered how 5,000 gourush were denied to the pidyon shvuim pickers. Here is the promised lesson from V-him!
nine0003
But, since the punishment is from G-d, then the deliverance is from G-d! It was decided to collect what was possible, to pray, repent and fast, and prepare to stand before the Creator.
Three days before the appointed time, the elders, who are free, decided to take the letter to the Ancestors of the People in the Cave of the Patriarchs. They performed the necessary cleansing, the soifer wrote a petition for intercession in a beautiful handwriting on the best kosher parchment. But how to transfer it? Bribed the guards at the Cave. Where there was no access for the Jews, just above the cave where the Patriarchs rested, there was a small opening in the wall, one might say a small window. They gave money to the guards (they gave everyone to avoid denunciation). Well, baksheesh in the Ottoman Empire is a special article. The guards swore by the Prophet, Paradise and the salvation of their souls that they would throw the letter into that opening.
nine0003
The night before the appointed time came. There is no sign or miracle from the Patriarchs. Forgetting about sleep, all the Jews of Hebron gathered in the largest synagogue and began to pray for forgiveness and deliverance.
Pasha could not sleep that night either. He was looking forward to how tomorrow he would be swaggering over the Jews — there was nowhere for them to get 50,000 gourush! And if they take it, they themselves will fall into poverty, and his wealth will increase! The pasha was greedy for gold. He took out a special chest with a secret lock, where he kept the accumulated, opened it with a key with twisted teeth. He took out a bag with a whimsical pattern and began to count the coins. I counted exactly 50,000 gurushes!
nine0003
Suddenly a breath passed through the chambers. The oil lamps went out. It’s dark and smells like a burnt wick. Out of this darkness three tall, radiant figures stepped towards the Pasha. The pasha saw the majestic elders, whose faces and clothes emitted a bright, blinding light, and fell on his face.
A powerful, booming voice reverberated through the hall:
“If you want to save a life, give us 50,000 gourush immediately!”
Silently, the pasha pushed a bag of gold to the feet of the elders and lost consciousness.
nine0003
I woke up in the morning from the singing of birds. He opened his eyes, and what — he lies on his bed. At the feet is a special chest. The lid of the chest is locked. Pasha remembered what had happened at night, rushed to the chest — to check if the treasured bag was there? Yes, how evil the key disappeared somewhere! And then the secretary came in — great gentleman, you can go to Hebron!
Entrance to mosque within the complex Caves of the Patriarchs 1920s
The Jews of Hebron, having finished their prayers, moved to the gates to the Jewish quarter — to meet Pasha and their fate. Everyone was sad — there was no answer for them …
The servant hurried last — a pasha — not a pasha, but everything had to be cleaned up and closed. As soon as he took a step from the door, he stumbled on something and flew upside down. Looks — he stumbled on the bag. Such an intricate one, with embroidery … I tried to lift it — it’s hard! He opened it, looked, and just thumped on his seat — apparently invisibly in a bag of money! I picked it up (where did the strength come from?!), and let’s go G-d — dusted it right to the elders! Those in the sack saw — their faces brightened. And then the pasha with the guards showed up.
nine0003
“We collected 50,000 gurushes, Jews,” the pasha asked contemptuously, without dismounting.
“Here, sir,” the elders answered simply and carried out the sack.
Seeing him, the pasha turned pale and began to fall off the saddle — the old men had to pick up the nobleman.
“This is my bag,” the ruler of the Damascus region said with trembling lips, “know, Jews, the Defenders of Israel do not sleep and do not sleep!” At night, Patriarchs Ibrahim, Ishak and Yakub came to me! Fear was instilled in me for the evil that I did to you! Saved my soul from sin! Take this money for yourself and pray for me in your synagogues — now I am your protection!

On June 28-29, pupils of the Tourism Center (headed by R. R. Fakhretdinova) visited the Salavatsky and Kiginsky districts of the Republic of Belarus.
After a 4-hour journey, we stopped for lunch in the valley of the Ai River, near the village of Lakly. nine0003
Next, the tour group went to the Idrisovskaya cave, which is located in a picturesque corner on the banks of the Yuryuzan River.
Idrisovskaya cave is also known as Salavata, Kissyatash (cut mountain) and Palace.
According to popular legend, in the autumn of 1774, after the suppression of the peasant uprising, Salavat Yulaev was hiding in the cave with a group of comrades.
We reach the tourist camp, pass the bridge over the stream, and a beautiful panorama opens before us: sheer cliffs towering above the river and “window openings” of the cave. We cheerfully climb the rocky path, and we are already on the «balcony» of the famous cave. An amazing creation of nature — walls resembling stonework, narrow partitions between openings — like in a real palace …
Next we go up to the observation platform. The view is amazing, below is the beautiful Yuryuzan, in the sky there is not a cloud, only the dazzling rays of the hot sun and the indescribable aroma of wild strawberries!
Next we go to Tekeevo — the homeland of Salavat Yulaev. The village has long been gone, it was wiped off the face of the earth by punishers after the suppression of the Pugachev rebellion. A picturesque place on the bank of the Ust-Kanda river. It is not surprising that Salavat Yulaev was a poet, in such beautiful places there is so much inspiration for creativity. nine0003
We stopped for the night on the banks of the Yuryuzan River not far from the regional center Maloyaz. Soon a bivouac was set up in the “Salavat rock” tract, a fire blazed, and the children were already swimming in the river with might and main.
The next day, after breakfast, we went to the mineral springs «Kurgazak».
The source is a hydrological monument of nature, the composition of the water belongs to hydrocarbonate-magnesium-calcium waters. Not far from it is the famous sanatorium «Yangantau», one of the best health resorts in Bashkortostan. It was not possible to visit the territory of the resort, due to epidemiological restrictive measures. nine0003
A 3-kilometer walking route to the gushing Aisky spring was organized in the Kiginsky district. Artesian spring water gushed out in 1981, as a result of exploration work in search of bauxite.
