fire and explosion theory: explosion in San Juan (Puerto Rico)

explosion in San Juan (Puerto Rico)

On an early December morning in 1996 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, a massive explosion rolls through the streets. 33 people died, more than 80 were injured. Exploded commercial six-story building, which was located shops and offices.

This office building has never had a gas supply because there are no living quarters here. Under the road, located next to the building, laid communications (water, gas pipes, sewerage). Not far from the building there is a restaurant that uses liquefied gas. nine0006

A few days before the explosion, Sarah Ruiz, a saleswoman in a store located in an office building, noticed an unpleasant smell when she arrived at work, so she decided to spray perfume in the room.

Arturo O’Neill, the manager of the Umberto Vidal shoe store, also noticed an unpleasant smell. When Arturo went down to the basement where the shoe store was located, the smell got stronger. Worried about the smell, O’Neal calls a gas company technician, but he finds no gas and assumes the smell is coming from the sewer. The next day, the smell became even stronger and Arturo again calls technicians, who again find nothing and suggest that the smell comes from shoes, but still check the soil under the road, under which communications are laid (including a gas pipe). A day later, technicians from the gas company re-check the holes punched in the soil with a gas analyzer, and again they find nothing. On the same morning, technicians came to repair one of the air conditioners. The store opens despite the smell. Explosion! nine0006

The investigation ruled out arson and terrorism as the cause of the explosion, and found that the technicians did not know how to use the gas analyzer.

Using the informational material, answer the questions:

1.

What kind of gas could explode in the basement?

2.

Why didn’t this gas explode sooner?

3.

What do you think caused the explosion?

Properties of propane

Propane is a colorless, odorless gas, but under the influence of a small pressure (1.6 — 1.8 MPa) it turns into a liquid, in this state it can flow like water, heavier than air. The source gas has no odor, so special components are added to it at the production stage. Thus, in the event of a leak, it can be felt. Very slightly soluble in water. Forms explosive mixtures with air at vapor concentrations from 2.1 to 9,five%. Propane is used as fuel. For heating industrial premises in construction. For heating industrial premises (on farms, poultry farms, in greenhouses). For gas stoves, water heaters in the food industry.

Properties of methane

Methane is the simplest hydrocarbon, colorless and odorless gas. Slightly soluble in water, lighter than air. When used in everyday life, industry, odorants with a specific “gas smell” are usually added to methane. The main component of natural (77–99%), associated petroleum (31-90%), firedamp and swamp gases (hence the other names for methane — swamp or firedamp).

Methane is 90-95% biological. Herbivorous ungulates emit a fifth of their annual methane emission: it is produced by bacteria in their stomachs. Other important sources are termites, paddy rice, swamps, natural gas filtration (this is a product of past life), plant photosynthesis, decomposition of household waste, and sewage.
