San Juan de la Isla Hotel Review, Ometepe, Nicaragua

Lush and volcanic Ometepe Island is located in the southern part of Lake Nicaragua – the second largest lake in Latin America. It’s an idyllic island for volcano hikes, swimming, nature tours and coffee plantation visits. This lakefront converted finca, halfway along the island, sits on a 160-acre dairy and plantain farm. The long rural track to the lodge passes through fruit trees, shady cedar forests and farmland and ends at a sandy beach near Santo Domingo.

Style and Character

8
/
10

Authentically Nicaraguan, packed with eco-credentials, this finca comprises a main lodge that reflects the farm’s century-old Spanish colonial roots. Expect loads of period detail in tiled floors, whitewashed bedrooms, local handicrafts and patio hammocks. The newer buildings include beachfront log cabins and volcano-view bedrooms, all echoing the style notes of the original farmhouse; so too, the semi-alfresco bar and restaurant pavilions.

Particularly appealing is its garden setting, where palms, red flowering Malinche trees and tropical plants provide shelter from the fierce sun and at night, fireflies dance through the branches.

Service and Facilities

Although few of the staff speak good English, they are charming and keen to please. The concierge can arrange exciting island activities from guided volcano hikes to nature tours, alongside kayaking, mountain biking and horseriding. For families, a spacious lodge offers slouchy sofas, toys and board games, and age-related island tours can also be arranged.

The sandy beach has palapa shades and the lake water is clean and safe. The finca can also arrange car hire (from $60/£46 a day), or meet guests from either the airport (Managua is a 30-minute flight away) or the ferry terminal.

Rooms

Pick a stilted lakeside cabin for the best breezes as these come with covered balconies. However, the interior wood panelling and palm thatched ceilings make them somewhat dark. Beds are comfortable and there’s air-conditioning, alongside thoughtful extras spanning tea and coffee-making facilities to filtered water and a well-stocked minibar.

Spacious bathrooms have decent showers, but apart from hooks and shelves, there’s nowhere to hang your clothes. Beware of flying ants in summer months – they’re attracted to light and easily gain entry. Nice touches in all rooms include locally made wooden furniture and handicrafts, although lodge and volcano rooms tend to be basic and very small.

Food and Drink

/

Nicaraguan food is not known for its gourmet credentials but the food served in the semi-alfresco pavilion is pretty good. Expect perfectly cooked lake fish with garlic sauce, capers and salad ($12/£9), alongside pastas, steaks and chicken. Cocktails are reasonably priced with many featuring Nicaraguan Flor de Caña rum. Breakfasts include traditional Nicaraguan dishes like eggs with pinto gallo, tropical fruits and homemade bread.

Value for Money

Double rooms from $75 (£58) in low season; and from $125 (£97) in high. Breakfast included. Two nights minimum. Free Wi-Fi.

Access for guests with disabilities?

San Juan de la Isla enjoys stunning views of Ometepe’s towering volcanoes, the rugged, active Concepción and the misty, cloud forest wrapped, Maderas.

The lodge’s beach-front location is the ideal base for swimming in Nicaragua’s lake, clean, warm waters, hiking inside nature reserves, mountain biking, horseback riding and volcano climbing.

The best of all is the laid-back, authentic rural style of San Juan de la Isla, which is set inside the Finca San Juan, a tropical fruit tree plantation surrounded by precious wood trees and rare wildlife.

The understated, century-old Spanish colonial hacienda house has been faithfully restored and serves visitors as the lodge’s restaurant. Lodging is exclusive, limited to four colonial rooms near the Casa Hacienda, four rooms with a shared porch in front of a beautiful water pond, where you can see different kinds of birds and other animals, three independent cabins near the restaurant and Casa Hacienda. And the best ones, eight front-lake bungalows.

A uniquely privileged site, with frontage on the main road between Moyogalpa and Altagracia that affords direct paved access to the private entrance of the property, the Finca San Juan enjoys at its other extreme more than 650 feet (200 m) of private beach front along the island’s finest beach Santo Domingo.

The Finca San Juan possesses 160 acres (65 ha) of rolling island terrain, full of tropical flora, two year-round fresh water springs, century-old stone walls, precious wildlife, over 40,000 fruit trees and stunning views to both volcanoes.

A ground-up restoration of the historic hacienda house was completed in August of 2009, achieving its principle goals, restoring and conserving the authentic colonial hacienda Nicaragua style of the house, returning it to its original classic form, which visitors can appreciate today in its understated splendor.

San Juan de la Isla offers a variety of lodging options, all close to the shores of Lake Nicaragua and feature authentic Nicaraguan in style and character. Each room, cabin or bungalow features handmade furnishings made right here on our property by local Ometepe artisans using precious woods sourced from our farm natural strands and replaced by our reforestation project.

  • Hotel San Juan de la Isla Activities:
  • Ecological Reserve Charco Verde
Although degraded by the owners who have deforested lands above the body of water to seed cattle pasture, this tranquil coastal lagoon is still worth a visit.

Home to the island’s most legendary ghost and a fresh water Atlantis, Charco Verde or Green Lagoon attracts some beautiful wading birds and mangrove trees that hide turtles and boas; while forest around the lagoon is home to many fruit trees and howler monkeys.

  • San Ramón Cascade
The biggest cascade on the island is a one hour hike from the private farm that sits at its trail head. Though damaged by farming pressures on its water output, this is a big attraction for many visitors looking for shorter mountain hikes than the summit trail and it affords a glimpse at some beautiful flora and lake views. On clear days Costa Rica’s northwestern Volcanoes are visible from the upper trail head.

  • Finca and Playa Santo Domingo
La Finca Santo Domingo was founded in the mid-nineteenth century, the family Floes, who emigrated Chontales department seeking better horizons. The family settled on a small property of 106 blocks, located in the region of the shores of Lake tilgen, which was called Hope, then eventually took the name of Finca Santo Domingo livestock traditional vocation.

Given the growing demand of tourists in the 90s, several of the properties located on the coast of Playa Santo Domingo were converted into hotels and restaurants, which focused its offer these beautiful 4 km of white sandy beach and water volcanic shallow ideal for enjoying safe bathing, which currently represent one of the main centers of attraction of the island of Ometepe.

  • La Peña Inculta Trail
A pleasant, if rocky, 1.5 km hike through the best preserved lowland forest on Ometepe. The Peña trail cuts through volcanic rock fields trapped in tropical dry forest and is home to some of the islands oldest trees.

This forest is home to thousands of nesting parakeets and parrots like the endangered Yellow-napped Amazon Parrot, while howler and white-faced monkeys are also prevalent.

  • Río Istian
One of the best bird watching sites on the island, this river that cuts into then isthmus that connects the islands’ two great volcanoes in accessible from Mérida. Many choose to explore the river in kayak or row boat rented from locales. Views of Concepción are impressive and birding and wildlife watching are rewarding.

  • Punta de Jesús María
Punta de Jesus Maria, is a peninsula located 4 km south of Moyogalpa, formed by the accumulation of ash and dust from the volcano Conception. Also called Punta de la Paloma. This is one of the most visited by tourists because of the panoramic view of the volcanoes. You can walk on the sand and ashes into the lake, which in summer can reach up to 2 km, giving the feeling of walking on water.

  • Concepción Volcano
Concepción volcano tour can be done with two variations: the ascent to the Floral and the ascent to the crater. The recommended time-out is at 6:00 am., By car to the community of La Concepcion and La Sabana, where the ascent begins 30 minutes after arriving and have received general recommendations of the guide. The first stage is a buffer zone of the rise and nature reserve.

The base of the mountain is covered in tropical dry forest, however above 1,200 meters the eastern slope enjoys superior humidity and orchids and bromeliads are more common.

The cone is home to howler monkeys and White tailed deer which share this semi-sulfurous environment, with numerous birds and reptiles. Closer to the summit gases emitted from the interior of the crater are more prominent making the upper reaches of the mountain a harsh landscape, ample evidence of the earth’s inner fury.

  • Maderas Volcano Natural Reserve
The Maderas volcano has much to offer in terms of natural and archaeological wealth. Its forests are potentially the most diverse of any forest of its size in Nicaragua, showing a transition from rain forest to cloud forest, dry forest and elfin forest in dry western slopes.

The crater of the volcano’s summit at 1. 394 m, covering a freshwater lagoon and little-known lower slopes contain several beautiful waterfalls. The petroglyphs, archaeological artifacts around the base of the volcano indicate that it was an important center for pre-Columbian civilizations of the Olmec, Toltec and Nahuatl.

  • Natural Spring Water Pond
The most robust fresh water spring on the island is also a favorite swimming hole for visitors and locals alike. Though significantly altered from its natural state, this shady spot is great for cooling off in pristine subterranean waters that rise to the surface here. Located just inland from Santo Domingo Beach, the spring has a cover charge and feeds one of the few rivers on the island, known as Rio Buen Suceso.

  • Archaeological Museum Ometepe
The Ometepe Archaeological Museum is located in the town of Altagracia park 50 meters to the west. This museum was founded in 1994, thanks to the interest of the association sponsoring the museum and culture of Ometepe between volcanoes and the Foundation, supported by DANIDA and the Nicaraguan Institute of Culture. This has 4 exhibition rooms: living environment, living ethnology, history and archeology room.

This community museum is worth a visit for its diverse displays of everything from geology to natural history to culture and archaeology. There are also bigger basalt pieces in the back patio of the museum. The exhibits are open from 9:00 17:00 daily.

  • El Ceibo Museum
Located 11 km from Moyogalpa on the road to Altagracia is the island’s finest museum. Though originally started as a monetary museum with very complete examples of Nicaragua’s monetary history, the museum also has the finest pre-Columbian collection on display on Ometepe, with more than 1,000 pieces in the collection. The exhibits are open daily from 8:00 to 17:30.

  • Petroglyph Sites
Nicaragua is extremely rich in pre-Columbian rock art called petroglyphs, the epicenter of this wealth in the Island of Ometepe with more than 73 different sites and over 1,700 panels recorded to date.

While some have been sent to museums or entered into private collections, many are still in their original locale. Two of the most popular sites for visitors are the Finca El Porvenir located west of Santa Cruz and Finca Magdalena on the east slope of Maderas, just above Balgües.

  • San Diego Festival
Altagracia and the festival in honor of a Franciscan saint is famous countrywide for a unique folkloric dance that originates here. Known as Baile del Zompopo (dance of the leaf-cutter ant), the dance can be seen during celebrations for the town’s patron saint, San Diego de Alcalá which hits stride on November 12 and climaxes on November 17. The dance comes from a pre-Christian tradition.

The indigenous population of the area used to celebrate their harvest God, every November. Legend has it that one year the harvest was being annihilated by leaf-cutter ants and the local religious leaders instructed the people to pay tribute to the ants, to win them over and draw the ants away from critical, year-end corn plantations. The dance imitates leaf-cutter ant lines, with dancers holding a single branch over their heads.

The original dance was not doubt a success and a unique tradition born. When the Franciscans arrived in 1613 they brought with an image of the saint of San Diego whose celebration days coincided with that of the annual celebration for the harvest God. Gradually, by careful design, San Diego usurped the native God and thanks to this historical theological morphing, today’s visitors can experience a thousand-year-old island dance.

Hotel Lara’s Planet

Hotel in El Castillo de la Concepción

Lara’s Planet Hotel offers pet-friendly accommodation in El Castillo de la Concepción.
We were greeted by Natalie, who could not. have been more friendly or helpful. The room we booked was nice and as described but we upgraded to the bigger room which has a wonderful view along the river. The room was airy & spacious and had a lovely balcony with a hammock to relax in. Hot water and. Internet was available. Remember when booking at El Castillo it is a remote village where everything has to be bought in by boat. Considering this the standard was much better then we expected. We really enjoyed our stay here.

Guacim Lodge

El Castillo de la Concepción

Guacimo Lodge is located in a 40-hectare forest, close to El Castillo and the Indio Maiz Biosphere Reserve.
We loved everything about our stay at Guacimo Lodge and wish we had stayed longer!
Getting there- The owner, Manuel, organized every aspect of our transfer to the lodge from San Jose, Costa Rica and onward to Ometepe Island so our travels were safe and SO easy. Communication and coordination between all of the drivers/captains was flawless and Manuel even had someone waiting for us at the Nicaraguan border to assist us through immigration.
The Lodge- The staff at the lodge were attentive and highly skilled from first contact to departure. The food was fresh and delicious and all of our requests were accommodated with a genuine smile. The rooms were our perfect idea of “rustic luxury” with beautiful natural building materials, a comfortable bed, and breezy nights with screens to keep out the bugs. One of the highlights for us was the view from the rooms, which has to be the best in the area! The owner has put great effort into employing locals and conserving the forest in the area.
The activities- We did many of the tours offered by the lodge and loved all of them. The guides were fantastic, spoke perfect English, and really went above and beyond to make certain we had a wonderful experience.
Overall, our stay at Guacimo Lodge was our favorite part of our month long trip to Nicaragua. We loved the El Castillo area, the friendly locals, and the lodge felt like a jungle paradise. We look forward to returning for a longer stay in the future to spend more time enjoying the lodge and exploring the Indio Maiz Reserve!

A great place to stay! A lovely old house, clean, comfortable and on a quiet street close to the center for the bus and boats. The owners are extremely kind people, I needed to change my dates twice due to a chane of plans and then unforseen circumstances and they were very generous and understanding. I booked and stayed here both times I was in San Carlos. Overall, fantastic value and would absolutely recommend a stay here!

The staff was awesome, super friendly and accommodating. Modest and comfortable rooms. good wifi. We were there before heading on to Nicaragua. The owner was very helpful to make sure we had what we needed before leaving. Very nice Costa Rica typical breakfast. Great location a couple blocks off the highway from the big stores/bus station. 4 or so blocks from the river park and bank. Los Chiles is also a pretty quiet town, which was nice. The river front park is new too and nice for our kids. We will definitely stay there again next time we are coming through the area.

It is a very remote location near the Nicaraguan border so facilities should be judged in that light. It is run by a charming and hard-working family and staff. They work hard on preserving the ecology and attracting birds and monkeys and producing artisanal chocolate and planting cocoa trees and guests are invited to plant a tree for these purposes. They produce excellent guides for bird and animal watching on the Rio Frio. An excellent stay

Great accommodation in Cano Negro. Family who run it is really nice and helpful, there were no problem with anything. The accommodation is really nice, it sits in a large garden which is connected to a small lagoon.
It is clean, has a coffee maker (which is important for me:). Next to the Poponjoche is restaurante Fogon, which has the best meal I ate during our month in Costa Rica.
We are birdwatchers so wanted to take the tour on lagoons. We did our search in the village and than decided to take son of owner of Poponjoche as guide since he can speak english. His father who is good bird guide also went with us. We were happy we choose them.
Beware, there is NO BUS from Cano Negro to Upala or Los Chiles on Sunday!!! And taxi can get really expensive on this day.
