Centro de Interpretación «Castillo de San Cristóbal»
El Centro de Interpretación «Castillo de San Cristóbal», gestionado por el Organismo Autónomo de Museos y Centros del Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, es una propuesta interpretativa que permite al visitante descubrir y contextualizar los restos de la muralla del Castillo de San Cristóbal, así como conocer algo más sobre la historia y el sistema defensivo de la Isla.
En junio de 2006, durante las obras de remodelación de la Plaza de España a partir de un proyecto de los arquitectos Herzog & de Meuron, aparecen vestigios del muro perimetral de dicha construcción. Ante la importancia histórica del hallazgo, se decide proteger y poner en valor este recurso patrimonial, incorporando al nuevo trazado arquitectónico una galería subterránea para hacerlo visitable.
En el Centro se da a conocer el sistema defensivo que tuvo la Isla, haciendo un recorrido no solo por los castillos de Santa Cruz de Tenerife (San Cristóbal, San Juan o Paso Alto), sino también por los que se emplazaban a lo largo de la geografía insular, alguno de los cuales aún continúan en pie: como el de San Felipe, en el Puerto de la Cruz; o el de San Miguel, ubicado en Garachico.
El proyecto expositivo, que ha sido elaborado por el Museo de Historia y Antropología de Tenerife, dedica otro de sus ámbitos a la historia del propio Castillo de San Cristóbal, desde su edificación hacia 1575 hasta su demolición en 1928. Como testimonio de su presencia, se ha resaltado la silueta de su planta en el piso del lago que actualmente ocupa parte de su emplazamiento. Una construcción militar que hasta hace unos años solo era recordada por la popular calle Castillo; pero que ahora se ha asomado al presente y reclama su lugar en la historia de la Ciudad.
Desde el 25 de julio de 2009, el Centro de Interpretación «Castillo de San Cristóbal» dispone de un atractivo añadido: el mítico cañón de bronce El Tigre. Una pieza de artillería del siglo XVIII, realizada en un taller sevillano, de unos 3 m de largo y 2.000 kg de peso. Se trata de un emblemático bien patrimonial que fue trasladado desde el Museo Histórico Militar de Canarias a su actual emplazamiento para ser expuesto en una sala acondicionada.
Esta nueva ubicación temporal resulta idónea para el representativo cañón, no sólo porque se trata de en una pieza de excepción para ilustrar el discurso expositivo del Centro, sino porque con su presencia rememora, además, el lugar que ocupaba la noche del 24 de julio de 1797, cuando truncó las aspiraciones británicas de tomar Santa Cruz de Tenerife, ciudad que encumbró a la cúspide jurídico-administrativa de la Isla y, por extensión, de Canarias.
Aunque indemostrable históricamente, la tradición popular admite que fue El Tigre quien hirió al famoso almirante inglés Horacio Nelson, arrebatándole un brazo. Símbolo de aquella gesta, esta pieza de artillería ha pervivido en la memoria del tinerfeño. Ha sido mentado, reproducido e imaginado desde entonces y se ha mantenido a lo largo del tiempo como una de las más poderosas metáforas y alegorías del valor; así como de los sentimientos del pueblo de Tenerife.

La estrategia defensiva que montaron los españoles alrededor de San Juan de Puerto Rico fue absolutamente perfecta.
Ni un resquicio podía quedar sin defender. Piratas, corsarios y otros invasores debían encontrarse con una plaza imposible de tomar, y por ello, crearon un cinturón de fortalezas único en el Caribe.
Como parte de ella, el fuerte de San Cristóbal ( que se visita antes o después del Morro y que lleva un pago de entrada conjunta), aparece en la misma puerta del Viejo San Juan, viniendo desde la ciudad nueva y en lo alto de un promontorio de la costa norte.
Su conservación e importancia histórica y arquitectónica lo declararon Patrimonio de la Humanidad y Monumento Histórico Nacional, ya que los especialistas lo consideran un compendio de las características de las fortificaciones europeas de los siglos XVII y XVIII. Una de estas características, que también pude observar en La Habana, es que los lados que dan el frente a los posibles enemigos nunca se encuentran en ángulo recto, lo que obliga a los atacantes a actuar en ángulo oblicuo y los defensores pueden crear fuegos cruzados y cañonear a distintos niveles.

Si no me equivoco se filmó una película. Cierran a las 6 pero hay que ir antes porque por lo menos se tarda 1 hora la visita. Después ir a San Felipe, tiene estacionamiento los que hay por los alrededores están medio lejos.

Castillo de San Juan Bautista
Modern styles meet historic buildings in Santa Cruz. And here, in the immediate vicinity of the new Auditorium building, you will find the castle of St. John the Baptist, also called the Black Castle, which has stood here since 1644. It was the second most important fortress in the defense of the city. It served as a military fortress until 1924 years. In 1948 it was transformed into a military museum.

Maritimo Cesar Manrique Park
A few steps from the fort is the César Manrique Marine Park, a fun water park designed by the architect César Manrique. This is a posthumous work by a famous artist from Lanzarote, discovered in 1995. It uses natural elements such as volcanic rocks, palm trees, ornamental flowers and seawater waterfalls. All this is emphasized by Manrique’s unique wind machines.

Back to the historic center on a scooter
On the way to the assembly hall and other attractions, we walked from the city center along the promenade, which on one side borders the harbor and on the other side a busy road. The distance from the historical center of the city is 1.5 km, and therefore we chose a more fun and faster option to return by scooters. There is a dedicated lane for bicycles and scooters on the embankment, so riding is safe and comfortable. nine0003
Plaza de España
After about 10 minutes drive, we returned the scooters to Plaza de España, from where we continued our tour of the city. Plaza de España is the largest square in the Canaries, built in 1929 on the site of the historic Castillo de San Cristobal, designed to protect the island from pirates.
Currently, in the tunnel under the square, you can see several walls that have been preserved from the original building. This square houses the main political buildings of the island — Cabildo de Tenerife and Palacio de la Carta, and another square adjoins the square — Plaza de la Candelaria. St. Francis of Assisi
St. Francis of Assisi was originally a Franciscan monastery, and now it is the second most important church in the city after the Church of the Conception of the Virgin Mary. The current church was completed in 1680 and stands out for its large number of works of art.
The miraculous painting of Señor de Santa Cruz
The three-aisled church is one of the finest examples of baroque architecture in the Canary Islands and is famous for housing the miraculous image of the Señor de las Tribulaciones.
This is a small image depicting Jesus Christ, famous for the fact that after the cholera epidemic in 1893, the locals walked with him in procession through the streets of the city, and the epidemic miraculously stopped. For this reason, the image is invoked as the protector of the city and given the title Señor de Santa Cruz.

Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary
However, the most important church in the city is the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. It is the only five-aisled church in the Canary Islands with basilica architecture. The church was built in the 1500s and is known as the «Cathedral of Santa Cruz», but it is not really the Cathedral of Tenerife. This is the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Help in San Cristobal de la Laguna, the bell tower of the church and the main altar are noteworthy. Inside there is also an altar to James the Great, the patron saint of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, as well as the cross on which the city was founded in 1494 years.
