Conservation status	Es un ave aún abundante en muchas áreas, aunque su población ha disminuido en las últimas décadas en algunas zonas, especialmente en el este.

Habitat	Lagunas, lagos, pantanos; en invierno, también campos, estanques de parques y bahías de agua salada. Durante la temporada de reproducción, necesita cuerpos de agua dulce poco profundos con mucha vegetación. En otras épocas del año, puede residir en casi cualquier hábitat acuático, incluidas las lagunas o los embalses con costas vacías, los campos abiertos cerca de lagos, las marismas y las bahías costeras protegidas. A veces se ven aves que migran por el mar a cierta distancia de la costa.

Las fochas son aves acuáticas resistentes y adaptables. Aunque están relacionadas con los cautelosos rascones, nadan en aguas abiertas, como los patos, y caminan a lo largo de la orilla; son visitantes frecuentes en los campos de golf y los estanques de los parques urbanos. Por lo general se encuentran en bandadas y son agresivas y ruidosas. Emiten una gran variedad de cantos de día o de noche. Tienen patas fuertes y grandes con dedos lobulados. Las fochas que luchan por los límites territoriales se alzan y atacan a sus pares con las patas. Con frecuencia se las ve caminando en campo abierto cerca de estanques. Al levantar vuelo, deben caminar sobre la superficie del agua y batir las alas con fuerza para poder despegar.

Comportamiento alimentario

Presenta una amplia variedad de métodos de alimentación: camina en la superficie del agua, gira el cuerpo en aguas poco profundas, se sumerge bajo el agua (impulsado por las patas) y pasta en el suelo. Asimismo, les roba el alimento a diversos patos.

Huevos

De 6 a 11; a veces, entre 2 y 12. De color beis a grisáceo, con manchas marrones. Los nidos con más de 12 huevos probablemente pertenecen a más de una hembra. La incubación la realizan ambos sexos y dura entre 21 y 25 días.

Cría

Las crías pueden nadar con facilidad después de la eclosión, siguen a los padres y ellos las alimentan. Por la noche, las crías son empolladas en una plataforma construida por el macho. Las crías pueden volar a las 7 u 8 semanas después de la eclosión. 1 o 2 nidadas por año.

Dieta

Omnívora. Se alimenta principalmente de material vegetal, tallos, hojas y semillas de espigas de agua, juncos, hierbas y muchos otros, así como también de muchas algas. Además come insectos, renacuajos, peces, gusanos, caracoles, cangrejos de río, camarones y huevos de otras aves.

Nidificación

La focha americana es muy agresiva al momento de defender el territorio de nidificación. En el cortejo, el macho puede perseguir a la hembra a través del agua. Las exhibiciones incluyen nadar con la cabeza y el cuello retraídos, las alas arqueadas y la cola levantada para mostrar las manchas blancas. Nido: el sitio se encuentra entre la vegetación alta del pantano en aguas poco profundas. El nido (construido por ambos sexos) es una plataforma flotante de espadañas, totoras y juncos muertos, que está revestida con materiales más finos y se encuentra anclada a plantas permanentes. Puede construir varias plataformas similares; solo una o dos se utilizan para nidificar.

The resort town of Las Galletas is located in the south of Tenerife, 80 km from Santa Cruz de Tenerife and 10 km from the resort of Los Cristianos.
