Spirit Airlines was founded in 1980 in Macomb County, Michigan as Charter One, a Detroit-based charter tour operator that provides full travel packages and passenger service to Las Vegas, Atlantic City, the Bahamas. Charter One began scheduled air service in 1990 from Providence and Boston, Rhode Island to Atlantic City. On May 29, 1992, Charter One introduced jet aircraft to its fleet, changing its name to Spirit Airlines and beginning flights from Detroit to Atlantic City.
Spirit Airlines began operating scheduled flights to Florida cities in April 1993. Spirit expanded its operations over the next five years to include New York, Los Angeles and South Carolina.
Spirit Airlines moved its headquarters from Michigan to Miramar, Florida in November 1999. During the expansion of the market, flights to Chicago were added.
