It was a difficult task to narrow down, nevertheless, here are our 10 of the greatest and most famous Puerto Rican singers. Let’s get started!

Table of Contents

1. Jennifer Lopez

J-Lo cannot be anywhere other than at the top, including on our list. Arguably the most famous celebrity of Puerto Rican descent, Jennifer Lopez is a megastar on both the big screen and on the charts.

In her early twenties, Lopez became a Fly Girl dancer on the sketch comedy show In Living Color. Later, she turned down the opportunity to tour as a dancer with Janet Jackson to pursue an acting career.

She received high praise for her lead role in the biopic Selena and had a star turn opposite George Clooney in Out of Sight.

Lopez has also managed a successful music career alongside her acting. She has released eight studio albums, and all but one charted in the top 10 on the Billboard 200.

2. Ricky Martin

If J-Lo is Puerto Rico’s biggest celebrity, Ricky Martin is not far behind. How else could he have earned the nickname King of Latin Pop?

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Martin has become a music sensation, pop icon, sex symbol, and Emmy-nominated actor. No wonder he is considered one of the most influential people in the world.

3. Daddy Yankee

The King of Reggaeton, Daddy Yankee was born Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez in San Juan in 1976. He has been credited as one of the pioneers of reggaeton and has influenced a number of rappers and music artists who have followed.

Rodríguez scored his first major hit with “Gasolina” in 2005. In 2017, Rodriguez scored big again with “Despacito,” the first Spanish-language song to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in over two decades.

He has won hundreds of awards and accolades. Rodríguez is widely considered to be one of Latin America’s most influential music artists, cited as an idol by many singers on this list.

4. Bad Bunny

Born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio in Almirante Sur, Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, fans know him better as reggaeton rapper Bad Bunny.

Ocasio sang in the church choir until he was thirteen, then started rapping in high school. He experimented in Latin trap and reggaeton, streaming his music independently until he was discovered.

Bad Bunny has collaborated with some of the top artists in music, including Drake and Cardi B. The song “I Like It” was the first #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 featuring Bunny.

5. Rita Moreno

6. José Feliciano

Feliciano was born in Lares, Puerto Rico, in 1945. He was blind at birth due to congenital glaucoma. From the age of 9, Feliciano would teach himself how to play acoustic guitar by listening to rock and roll records.

Some of Feliciano’s most known songs include his rendition of the Christmas classic “Feliz Navidad” and covers of “Light My Fire” and “California Dreamin’.”

7. Marc Anthony

Marco Antonio Muniz Rivera was born and raised in New York City to Puerto Rican parents. His father played guitar and taught his son how to sing in both Spanish and English at an early age. That boy grew up to become better known as Marc Anthony.

Anthony and fellow New Yorker J-Lo were married from 2004 to 2012. They have twins together, Emme and Max.

Farruko released two smash hits in 2014, “Passion Whine” and “6 AM.” He has also collaborated with top artists like Daddy Yankee, Bad Bunny, J Balvin, and Ricky Martin.

He stopped a concert to speak about God, upsetting many fans who paid to hear his songs. Farruko asked forgiveness for the lyrics of his popular song “Pepas,” denouncing the references to partying and drug use.

10. Chayanne

And lastly, Elmer Figueroa Arce became one of Puerto Rico’s best-selling music artists of all time under his stage name, Chayanne. He has sold over 50 million records worldwide.

Born in Rio Piedras in 1968, Chayanne once tried out for the group Menudo, but he was turned down because of his young age. Instead, he joined the band Los Chicos and released several hit recordings.

Chayanne’s solo career rose with his self-titled album in 1987. He had several hits, mixing ballads and dance tracks.

He is not just famous for his hit songs, however. Chayanne is also an accomplished actor, appearing in a couple of telenovelas through the ’80s.

Tesla founder Elon Musk, known for his renewable projects energy, promises to restore Puerto Rico’s devastated power industry using its solar panels.

Weeks after the devastating Hurricane Maria, most of this island nation is still without electricity.

  • Hurricane Maria left Puerto Ricans without electricity
  • Seva Novgorodtsev about hurricanes over the Virgin Islands Rico.

The governor of the island, Ricardo Rosello, wrote back: «Let’s talk. »

«Do you want to show the world the capabilities and adaptability of Tesla technology? Puerto Rico could be that flagship project,» Governor Rosello said.

Musk Tesla is best known for its electric vehicles, but it also has a subsidiary, SolarCity, which manufactures solar panels capable of storing significant amounts of electricity.

The company claims to power entire islands such as Tau in American Samoa. A solar-panel-based energy grid has been built there, feeding the entire island and able to store energy, which is enough for three days without the sun.

    • Elon Musk bets on giant factory

«The Tesla team has done many similar projects for small islands around the world, but this technology has no limits, so it can be replicated for Puerto Rico,» Musk said on your Twitter.

However, he then added that such a project would require the support of the Puerto Rican authorities — just what the governor of the island had been talking about.

The conversation was reminiscent of a Twitter bet between Musk and an Australian software developer that set off a project to build the world’s largest energy storage facility in South Australia.

Tesla guaranteed that the batteries would start working 100 days after the signing of the contract, but in fact the structure was half erected within a few days after the start of construction.

Reuters reported this week about a florist, Hector Santiago, who invested $300,000 in solar panels six years ago.

«Then everyone called me crazy — it was so expensive. But now I have electricity, and they don’t,» he told the agency.

Tesla has reportedly already sent battery systems to Puerto Rico that can capture and store power from the island’s already existing solar panels to make up for the shortfall in electricity.

Elon Musk has been successful in many innovative projects.

In addition to his famous Tesla Motors and solar energy project, he also founded SpaceX, which develops reusable rockets for spaceflight.

Last week, Musk unveiled plans for a city-to-city passenger rocket flight system that would take London to New York in half an hour. The millionaire innovator also announced an expedition to Mars by 2024.

15 major cities in the world where tourists should not go, they want to live

The sea, palm trees, picturesque beaches and beautiful skyscrapers — all these components of a million-plus city do mean that you have arrived in paradise. In such a city, the infrastructure can be well developed, hotels can offer excellent services for luxury guests, but it is not a fact that ordinary residents live there safely. And in some cities, even just walking down the street is a big risk, not only in the evening, but also during the day. Analysts have compiled a list of the most dangerous, most criminal major cities in the world. Read it and it might surprise you.

    1. Tijuana (Mexico)

This Mexican metropolis has more than 2 million inhabitants, but it is considered the most dangerous city in the world. The murder rate in Tijuana is approximately 138 per 100,000 citizens, in other words, an average of seven people die here every day. Despite the rich history and abundance of attractions, Tijuana is characterized by widespread poverty and violent crime. In addition to murders, these are most often rapes and kidnappings.

    Tijuana.

There is a lot of human trafficking and drug dealing run by various gangs. Another reason for the violence is the rivalry between the Sinaloa and Tijuana cartels.

    2. Acapulco (Mexico)

This famous city is surrounded by a romantic halo, because in the Mexican serials that we played in Russia in the 1990s, love twists and turns unfolded there. However, Acapulco is also famous for its very high crime rate. It is not for nothing that it is in second place in the ranking of the most dangerous of large cities. With a population of about 800 thousand people, the murder rate here is noted in the proportion of 111 to 100,000 inhabitants.

    Acapulco.

Yes, this city used to be a playground for melodramas and Hollywood films, but now the war on drugs is not in the movies, but on the streets. The hillside areas of Acapulco have become strongholds for gangs like 221 or Los Locos. They consist of kidnappers, hired killers, extortionists, car thieves. The uncontrolled violence caused the city’s tourism industry to decline.

    3. Caracas (Venezuela)

The population of the capital of Venezuela is 2,682,801 people, and the murder rate is one in a hundred. In 2017, Caracas was named the most dangerous capital in the world. More than five years have passed — and he is still one of the shameful three, although he has lost his position a little.

    Caracas.

Violence in Caracas is due to the widespread poverty of most of the townspeople and a weak law enforcement system.

    4. Fortaleza (Brazil)

The Brazilian city of Fortaleza has approximately 4 million inhabitants, and approximately one in 69th out of a hundred thousand citizens dies at the hands of murderers.

    Fortaleza.

While popular tourist attractions such as Lençua Maranhenses National Park and Jericoacoara Beach are in close proximity to Fortaleza, violent crime unfortunately overshadows its beauty. A tourist should be very careful when walking around the city and its picturesque surroundings.

    5. Pretoria (South Africa)

This prominent South African city of 741,651 has a homicide rate of 38 per 100,000.

    Pretoria.

Experts specify that tourists should avoid traveling and hiking in the evening and at night, even in groups. In Pretoria, you are not immune from armed robberies and gang violence.

    6. Durban (South Africa)

Following Pretoria in the criminal rating is another South African city — less famous, but more populated (about 4 million people live in it). Durban is the third largest and busiest metropolitan area in South Africa, but its poverty is still at its peak.

    Durban.

Among South Africans, this city is notorious for a wide variety of serious crimes, including rape, murder (average rate — 43.4 per 100,000) and robbery. In addition to poverty, political instability is a major reason for the spread of violence in Durban.

    7. Johannesburg (South Africa)

Johannesburg is one of the deadliest cities in the world. The display of wealth in this city can be a delight to the tourist, but one must be very careful on the streets.

    Johannesburg.

The murder rate in this South African city with tall skyscrapers and luxury jeeps is 37.9 per 100,000 inhabitants.

    8. Salvador (Brazil)

Salvador, the capital of the Brazilian state of Bahia, is home to 4 million people. Luxurious high-rise buildings are built here, and the beaches amaze with their beauty. Salvador is known as one of the places where Brazilian culture was born, the largest carnival takes place here, and the old part of the city is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. However, the crime rate in the millionaire is impressive: statistics record 46.8 murders for every 100,000 inhabitants.

    El Salvador.

By the way, pickpocketing by children is very common in this city, so tourists and residents need to be very careful and avoid traveling by public transport.

    9. Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)

The population of Rio is about 7 million people. And the murder rate in relation to the number of inhabitants is about 30 per 100,000 people. Also, the city that Ostap Bender dreamed of so much, other crimes are common — robbery, rape, theft.

    Rio de Janeiro.

The US Department of State and the British Foreign Office advise their citizens not to visit the beaches of Rio de Janeiro after dark: they can be robbed and beaten. Also, guests of this sunny city are advised to avoid displaying any wealth, such as expensive watches or flashy gold jewelry.

    10. Cape Town (South Africa)

Half a million Cape Town has a well-developed infrastructure by African standards, there are enough foreigners in the city. However, the capital of South Africa also falls into the list of the most dangerous cities in the world.

    Cape Town.

Cape Town, with its homicide rate of 66 per 100,000 inhabitants, occupies an «honorable» tenth place in the anti-rating and is considered one of the deadliest cities in South Africa.

    11. San Juan (Puerto Rico)

San Juan is the largest city in Puerto Rico (about 320 thousand inhabitants), but the murder rate here is also rather high — 38 per 100,000 people.

    San Juan.

This city is «famous» for having the highest rate of violent crime in the country. The reason for this situation is social unrest and poverty.

    12. Baltimore (USA)

Baltimore, Maryland attracts many tourists in part because of its art scene and delicious food. However, the crime rate in this city of half a million is very high.

    Baltimore.

First of all, you need to beware of pickpockets, which are very numerous in the city, even in «safe» areas. However, violent crime is also a problem. The homicide rate in Baltimore is 75 per 100,000 people. True, the victims of serious crimes, unlike pickpocketing, as a rule, are not tourists, but local residents in lush areas.

    13. Maceio (Brazil)

Maceio is a popular tourist destination due to its stunning beaches and coral reefs. However, this city was once the most dangerous in Brazil, and indeed in the whole world, largely due to the high level of poverty and the spread of drug gangs.

    Maceio.

Military police action has helped curb crime in the area, but the homicide rate is still quite high. More than a million people live in Maceio, and about 40 out of 100,000 people regularly die at the hands of criminals. True, if a guest of the city does not leave the tourist area, the risk of becoming a victim of a crime will be minimal.

    14. St. Louis (USA)

The population of St. Louis, Missouri, is 300.5 thousand people. It is a lively industrial city. However, it still remains one of the most criminogenic cities in the United States. There are 70-80 murders per 100,000 inhabitants.

    St. Louis.

Tourists, as a rule, are completely safe here, but only if they do not move away from the main tourist areas. In the cereal districts of St. Louis, complete chaos reigns.

    15. Kingston (Jamaica)

Jamaica is one of the most popular and romantic travel destinations in the world with stunning tropical beaches and coral reefs.
