Auxerre — the most beautiful city in Burgundy
When I was planning a trip to Burgundy Auxerre, I only knew about the city that the city has its own football team, playing in the top of the French championship. And the spelling of the city in Russian and French is too different — Auxerre. Therefore, I did not expect anything from this visit, but it turned out that I was going to one of the most beautiful cities in Burgundy, and the city is large enough to admire all day.
Auxerre, which had the name Autissiodorum in ancient times, is a Gallic settlement that was captured by Caesar’s troops during the Gallic War. Otissiodorum developed rapidly, as the main road of Gaul, the Via Agrippa, passed through it. In the III century, the city is attacked by the Bagauds and Franks, which is why the local authorities begin to build defensive fortifications. Around the year 258, the Pope sent the first preacher to these lands — St. Perelin, who became the first bishop of the newly created bishopric. It is believed that in the basements of houses 29-31 along Rue Saint-Pelerin are the remains of the very first church of the III century. Under Diocletian, the city becomes the capital of the province. In the 5th century, Saint Herman of Auxerre, very revered in France, was bishop of Auxerre. It was he who founded one of the most famous abbeys in the country — Saint-Germain (Saint German), under him a cathedral appeared in the city. From the 8th century, the bishopric received county rights, and Auxerre became the capital of the independent county of Auxerre. By that time, many monasteries had been founded in the city. In the XI century Auxerre county. merged with other counties — Tonnerre and Nevers. During the XI-XII centuries. walls were erected (expanded) around the city. In 1273, as a result of a dynastic marriage, the county was headed by the House of Châlons-Auxerre. A century later, the count sold his county to the French king, the accession dragged on for a century, by that time France had replenished with the lands of all of Burgundy. In 1567, as a result of the Wars of Religion, the city was captured by the Huguenots, who seriously damaged the Catholic buildings of Auxerre.
In the 18th century, medieval fortifications were demolished in the city. In the 19th century, the city abandoned its railway station, which led to economic decline.
From Paris by car to Auxerre is only about 2 hours, but you can also get here by train (there is a station on the right bank of the Yon River, near the city center)
is the Clock Tower (part of medieval fortifications)

Behind the tower is the main square of the city, where the city hall is located, it must be said that the squares in the city are very small
Immediately there are many shops in the center, where there is not
and we go to the St. Etienne Cathedral
Cathedral of St. Etienne
One of the three portals of the temple
As already mentioned, the first cathedral on this site appeared in the 5th century, now its remains can be found in the crypt of the modern cathedral, its construction began in the 11th century (and continued until the 16th century). The cathedral was dedicated to the first Christian martyr — St. Stephen (Fr. Etienne), an archdeacon from Jerusalem, whom the Jews stoned to death for his sermons.

Tower of the city wall near the Abbey of Saint-Germain
And now we come, perhaps, to the main attraction of the city — the same Abbey of Saint-Germain. The temple is not active, now there is a historical and art museum with a fairly short opening hours. I couldn’t get inside. But a crypt of the Carolingian era (IX century) with unique frescoes of that period has been preserved there, and the relics of the saint are still buried there.
The former Benedictine monastery was founded around a small chapel built by Bishop Germanus of Auxerre for the relics of the Hieromartyr Mauritius and other martyrs from the Theban legion. Herman himself also rested there in 448. In the 6th century, the Myrovingian queen Chrodechild ordered the construction of a basilica on this site. By the 9th century, an abbey was formed around the church and the church was rebuilt again. In the 11th century, the abbey was badly damaged by fire, but despite this, Saint-Germain reached its dawn, many theologians from all over the world lived and studied here, among them was the future Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Becket. In the XIII century, the abbey church was rebuilt again. In the 16th century, the Huguenots severely damaged it, and subsequently the temple continued to collapse. During the French Revolution, part of the temple was demolished. The tower in the photo, which is now separated from the facade by about 50 meters, used to be one of the towers of the facade. Under Napoleon, the temple was a hospital.
View of the abbey church from the embankment
And we will go to another church in the city — St. Peter’s Church, it has a tower, which is not typical for a simple temple, since towers were placed only near cathedrals, this is that the church also belonged to the abbey of the VI century, but it was built only in the 16th -XVII centuries

9000 from Vercelli). Founded in the 7th century as part of a monastery. Initially, the monastery was outside the city fortifications and was often attacked, so the monks had to leave it. And in the 11th century, when the walls of the city were expanded, and the monks returned here, the canons of the Abbey of Saint-Laurent-les-Coses, located nearby, were introduced here. But the troubles of the church did not end there, the church was destroyed (and destroyed), like the mother abbey, and by the 16th century it was in a deplorable state, but nevertheless, it was restored. During the period of Huguenot power was also damaged and did not function. Subsequently, the monks of one of the main monasteries of Paris, the Augustinian monastery of St. Genevieve, were engaged in restoration here, to which the temple was subordinated. In the XVIII century, the last monks left here, and the lands of the abbey were sold for private houses
