Greater San Juan

Puerto Rico’s capital city is known not only for its vibrant cosmopolitan charm but also for having some of the hottest beachfront in the country. Easily accessible and popular among travelers, San Juan beaches boast vacation vibes and beachy bliss.

• Isla Verde, Carolina: While Carolina is technically San Juan’s neighboring town (just a short walk up the beach), it’s got some of the best beaches in the San Juan area. They are:
• El Alambique: The closest Isla Verde beach to San Juan proper, this is a great beach for pure hangin’ around—there are palm trees, umbrella and chair rentals, and food carts. Beach access is via neighboring hotels, so it’s street parking only for casual visitors.
• Balneario Carolina: While many travelers will head to El Alambique, a true local will tell you that Balneario is where it’s at. This public beach is super clean and filled with amenities like bathrooms, parking lots, and picnic areas. It’s a much more local vibe.
• Pinegrove Beach: Part of a beachfront hotel complex, Pinegrove is a great place to go to Puerto Rico if you’re looking to vacay at an oceanfront resort. Plus, the water is super calm.

• Condado Beach: A sunbather’s paradise with great waves to boot, Condado Beach has a luxurious vibe that’ll make your most extravagant vacation dreams come true. Lined with five-star restaurants, casinos, and chic shops, it’s a great place to grab a piña colada and chill out.
• La Playita del Condado: Just a stone’s throw from Condado Beach, this small lagoon-front beach boasts great views of San Juan’s skyline. Plus, the shallow water and small shore sit just feet away from an outdoor playground, making this small beach—playita—the perfect Puerto Rico destination for families.
• Playa Peña: One of the only beaches in Old San Juan, this one is great for vacationers and explorers. Spend time relaxing on the secluded sand, just minutes outside the city, then check out the historical ruins and sea glass along the shore.
• Playa El Escambrón: just outside of Old San Juan, this family-friendly beach is where the locals hang out. It’s protected from the waves by a reef, and the calm, roped-off swimming area is watched by lifeguards. Go early in the morning to see elderly locals doing their daily tai chi on the sand and before cooling off with a swim.

Isla de Culebra

This small island just off the east coast of Puerto Rico is breathtaking all around. A short and cheap ferry ride from Fajardo (or a 30-minute flight from San Juan) means that you can get to this wonderland in no time at all.

• Flamenco Beach: World-renowned for breathtaking views of clear, blue water and pure white sand, Flamenco Beach is bound to break your Instagram. The Puerto Rican beauty saw some damage after Hurricane Maria, but it’s since been restored to its former glory. It’s been hailed by many publications as one of the best beaches in the world.
• Bonus: Make sure to check out the rusted, graffiti-covered tanks that dot the beach—they’re relics from an old US military presence.

• Playa Tamarindo: Looking to get off the beaten path? Tripadvisor won’t tell you about this  hidden gem. Quiet and secluded, the waters at Tamarindo are extremely tranquil due to its surrounding reef—which also makes it an incredible place to snorkel. Experience marine life up close at Tamarindo Beach where stingrays and turtles are known to swim right up to people and practically pose for pics!
• Zoni Beach: This beach boasts the beauty of Flamenco Beach with the silence of a tropical daydream. Located in a secluded area of Culebra Island, it’s beautiful and quiet, devoid of other travelers and a local favorite. Be aware, though, it lacks beachside facilities.

Vieques Island

A larger island (also off the eastern shore of Puerto Rico proper), Vieques boasts some of the most unique beaches in the Caribbean—if not the world.

• Playa Negra: Playa Negra—a black sand beach on the south end of Vieques—is the perfect place to hike, kayak, and explore. Packs of wild horses from Vieques’ inland countryside are also known trot and swim alongside travelers. How cool is that?
• La Chiva: Nicknamed “The Blue Beach”, La Chiva definitely deserves a spot on your Puerto Rico bucket list. With crystal clear blue water and golden sands, there’s no question why.
• Punta Arenas: Yet another color-named beach, Vieques’ “Green Beach” runs alongside the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge. Ask one of our expert travel planners how you can take a slow drive through the lush forest before hitting the beach.

  July 4, 2020 we stock up in the elevator for over 30 minutes with 2 minors. No organism hears the alarm or answers the emergency phone. When the lady at the reception answered, she said no one knows how to open. They call a personal one from a nearby hotel. No apology, no other compensation, just a refund. Bad experience.

  The room was ok, my check in was 300pm and my room was not clean. I had to wait. The parking was far away and they didn’t have water to drink or sell any and if you wanted something to drink like soda or water you have to go and buy it cross the street to another hotel. Not good at all. To top it off, it was raining and everything was flooded outside, I could not even get out, not use my car as a boat. It was a terrible $259.00 spent on Saturday. Nowhere to go because of the flood. Worst place ever bad experience. Ruin my holiday.

  Good hotel in the middle of everything. Beach, nightclubs, casinos, restaurants, and plenty to do nustvwalking distance. They charge $16 for parking but there are plenty around the area that’s free.

  Great little hotel in a good location close to everything. The clerk who helped us at night (sorry can’t remember his name) was excellent. He was very sociable and energetic and gave us lots of advice on things to do/see/eat during our stay. The room was comfortable and very clean. The breakfast was average but that was to be expected.

  Warning DONOT stay here. Here are a few things they don’t tell you about — the hotel is still under construction, there is flooding every night outside of the hotel, there are cockroaches, etc. When I first arrived at the hotel, they put me in a room where there is a sink The faucet wouldn’t turn, the TV didn’t work, and the toilet was relentlessly clogged. Staff Absolutely oblivious. They will also not report the crime of stolen items. Terrible.

  I visited this hotel just after the hurricanes to help with relief efforts. The generator was turned off during the day to save energy which was really unbearable. I worked the night shift and couldn’t open my windows. I understand that there has been a huge amount of people who have no power at all, so it doesn’t seem fair to leave a terrible review. The thing is, there was power available and the manager chose to place our entire night shift rescue crew on the upper levels of the hotel and still make us pay for parking every day with no water or power available to us at all.

  Government employee, stayed at the hotel for disaster relief for 12 nights. When disaster hits, you should be thankful even for a hotel room. But there were things that had nothing to do with the disaster that ruined my otherwise great stay at the Comfort Inn.
  At check in, my bathroom was not clean and there was long hair all over the shower, floor and toilet. The towels weren’t changed every day and the bathroom wasn’t cleaned daily either, despite the manager saying they had service even during that time.
  Breakfast was constantly in need of restocking or cleaning and nothing will be done unless you ask for more bread or more eggs.
  My last day, I found long brown hair in my comb… I am a guy traveling alone with 2 inches black hair. I filed an incident report with an employee and have never received any apology or acknowledgment from management.

  We stayed here for two nights. Check in was quick, the front desk agent was very knowledgeable and was able to tell us about all the great local restaurants and attractions. We had a small view of the beach from our room which was a great plus. Comfortable bed, I appreciated the bright lighting in the bathroom, clean room in general. The breakfast was great. Eggs, sausages, assorted cereals, fresh coffee, fresh waffles — you make them yourself which I personally appreciated — assorted pastries (corn and chocolate muffins were super moist and delicious. ) The location of this hotel is perfect. Really beautiful 5 min walk to the beach, good 10 min walk to the square with all the bars, clubs and restaurants, 5 min taxi ride to Old San Juan. We didn’t use the pool at all because the beach was so close so I can’t comment on that. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay here and will definitely stay here next time!

  The place was very clean, very comfortable, love the bed Nice fluffy pillows beautiful towels. Very quiet, the only negative is you have to pay for parking $17 per day. They should have told me the cost. You only when you rent a hotel with parking. I have problems all over the country and there is always parking at my hotels. I believe there is always a first. I just feel it’s out of place you’re paying high prices and not like this… the rooms have been upgraded to a great continental breakfast.

  Do not stay here, the service is bad and there is no hospitality at the front desk. Especially at night the check in lady was not pleasant at all times. She ask about outside towel in the room, Wend we didn’t have any towels any moment. We call the front desk several times and they never pick up the calls. The hotel is not updated it looks like a Motel. It was $130 per night and $16 por a day for mini parking. I do not recommend this hotel and stay away from angry personal check in, especially the night shift.

  Had to stay here because it was the cheapest we could find that is nearby ave Ashford and Condado Beach. Friendly staff and good breakfast with fresh pastries from the bakery along with standard hotel breakfast fare. The room was outdated and dirty. The door was open when we arrived and there were towels not included in the room so we had to look for them. On top of that the AC worked great and the bed was really comfortable.

  Very nice free stay using the point, we love it!
  The location is good, as is 5 minutes walk from Condado beach. They gave us a room with a partial view of the Condado beach which was really good. You can view the Laguna del Condado as well from the hotel. The amenities are basic with a large LCD TV. We used our selection of hotel outlets so it was completely free, which is even better. Breakfast was typical and served at the bar. Everything there was a bit dated but still in good shape. The pool was good and they let us use even after they posted time. We took a taxi from and to the airport as the time of their travel speed is too fast to compare us to the standard. The prices for Hotels in San Juan are generally expensive so if you have the points to use this will save you a lot. Public transport (buses and free carts) was not reliable and traffic can be too bad, you can wait a long time sometimes. Walking may take less time especially in the Old City and El Morro.
