Domes is the number one surfing beach in Puerto Rico
Domes Beach is in the northwest corner of Puerto Rico in the municipality of Rincón, about 78 miles west, southwest going in a straight line from San Juan. And if you’ve ever been in surfer circles you know that Rincón is one of the greatest surfing areas in Puerto Rico. So this is not the beach for you if you’re looking for that tranquil, one-inch surf.

But Rincón isn’t known only for its surfing. This is actually one of the most beautiful places in Puerto Rico. Period!!! The Island of Desecheo, almost straight to the west, is home to a Wildlife Refuge that is closed to the public. But about twelve miles away from Desecheo is one of the greatest diving spots in the Puerto Rico.
Domes Beach has fluffy light tan sand, crystal clear turquoise water and a perfect climate all year ’round.
It’s also a natural beach. That means no parking, showers, restrooms, lifeguards, safety buoys, concession stands, gazebos, recycling bins, signage or written material.
And guess where it got its name? It sits right next to a nuclear power station covered by a blue dome that the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority tried to build during the sixties. Public outcry was so intense that the Island’s government abandoned the project. But don’t worry. You won’t see any two-headed fish in the water because there’s no evidence of radiation here.

What you could see is the occasional humpback whale in the distance. Why? Because Rincón is also famous among whale watchers that come here every year, from January to March, to witness migrating whales as they pass by the Rincón coastline, mate and give birth on the way back to New England, Iceland and Newfoundland.
It’s a nature lover’s paradise.
You can watch the show from the nearby lighthouse area or you can rent a boat that will take you right next to the whales. Apparently they don’t mind.
And what can I tell you about the sunsets? Well, let’s just say that they’re among the most spectacular in the world.
So there you have it: swimming, surfing, scuba diving, whale watching and spectacular sunsets. What more can you ask? Rincón has it all!!!

Matt, Conner and I went skin diving this morning for more lobsters. We were drinking coffee at 4:30 am and spent about an hour and a half exploring Reactor Reef, the reef that sits just north of Domes surfing beach. We hopped in about 100 yards around the corner on domes trail and hunted around the corner of the reef to Domes beach. I saw about 20 lobsters, but they were all small. Conner and Matt both spotted a few big ones but weren’t able to catch any. All in all, it was fun diving but I was a little disappointed to come back empty handed.
That’s just how it goes.
On our walk back to the truck (without lobsters), we started talking about the Dome that is right off the beach and I told Conner and Matt that I didn’t know the real story, but rumor had it that it was only open for an hour and then they shut the thing down, filled it with concrete and haven’t touched it since. When we got home, Conner decided to do a little research and we got the skinny on the Rincon Nuclear Reactor from the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission website.
The Dome is located on the point of Rincon past the light house about 100 yards at the end of the road. Rincon is located on the North West corner of Puerto Rico South West of Aguadilla and North West of Mayaguez. Rincon can be accessed of the #2 Road on both sides by the 115. The Dome was prototype nuclear power plant built to learn more about the technical and economical feasibility of a Boiling Nuclear Superheater reactor (BONUS). Rincons BONUS reactor is one of only two ever built by the U.
S. Atomic Energy Commission. The Nuclear Power Plant created power by producing saturated steam in the center portion of the reactor and would then superheat that steam in four surrounding chambers and feed the superheated steam into a turbine generator which would create electricity.
Construction for the facility began in 1960 and the first nuclear chain reaction was achieved on April 13th 1964. After being thoroughly tested it was brought up to full power in September of 1965. The reactor ran successfully until June of 1968 when its operation was terminated due to technical difficulties and high-cost modifications needed to run the plant safely and effectively. It was fully decommissioned in late 1969 early 1970. All nuclear materials were removed to the mainland. All the lines were flushed and the reactor vessel and associated internal components within the biological shield were entombed in concrete. Recently, in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s more clean-up and shielding activities were conducted.
The site is inspected minimally every quarter by PREPA and DOE. Current intentions of the site include opening the main floor to the public as a museum and learning facility.

Temperatures in Orange Beach in southern Alabama create a feeling of spring with mid-60s highs. Although the water is not warm enough for swimming, you can still enjoy many other outdoor activities such as parachuting, boating, fishing and nature trails. In addition, the beaches here are absolutely gorgeous, the sand is mostly quartz, resulting in pure white sand that sparkles in the sun. Sitting on the edge of the water, which is bluer than blue, the contrast is absolutely mesmerizing. Here, nine miles from the beach, you’ll have plenty of room to spread out your beach blanket and soak up those rays.
If you’ve always wanted to see dolphins in the wild, this is the place to be – there’s so much water here that you’re guaranteed dolphin sightings on cruises aboard the Cold Mill fleet. Nearby Alligator Alley offers the chance to see over 450 alligators in their natural habitat – and even feed and keep them if you dare.
Nature walks are also shown where you can see owls, ospreys, turtles and bullfrogs up close.

Winter temperatures in Kauai are in the upper 70s and you can even enjoy swimming in places like the beautiful and secluded Hanalei Bay. Poipu Beach on the south side is much calmer and a great snorkeling spot where you can see everything from colorful tropical fish to vibrant coral reefs. Tourists won’t want to miss exploring the cliffs of Na Pali for stunning views of the coastline. When the winter rains kick in, you can escape to the Kauai Museum in downtown Lihue, which features two floors of exhibits documenting Kauai’s heritage from Native Hawaiian days to the island’s plantation days, in addition to a host of historical and contemporary art from regional artists.

And on the west coast, the beaches of Rincon are the biggest secret of the surf community. In fact, some refer to the area as the surfing capital of the Caribbean. Some of the best beaches for surfing are Antonio Beach, sandy beach, domes and gas chambers. There are also many amazing surf beaches, such as Pool’s Beach, which is known for its warm, shallow pools and calm waves. If diving or snorkeling is your thing, some say that the sheltered island of Deseceo, just off the coast, offers the very best in all of Puerto Rico.

Sponges, sea fans and corals grow along the wall, and marine life such as seahorses, lobsters, turtles and an endless array of fish all live here.
Excellent snorkelling can be found on almost every beach on the island, and many hotels rent or provide snorkel equipment to guests. If you’re a surfer, beaches like Hollywood, Wenham, and the Silver Coast offer some of Southern California’s most consistent and best surf spots, and it’s at its best during the winter. Wine lovers can enjoy tastings and tours of a number of local wineries. If you are going on a boat trip, take 9A 0-minute excursion to the Channel Islands National Park and the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, one of the region’s most popular attractions.

If you’re cold, head back to your room to warm up with a soak in the hot tub for two or a dip in the heated saltwater pool.
