Entidades públicas, comunitarias y privadas recaudan fondos para rehabilitar la principal atracción de Culebra

Culebra – La devastación causada por los huracanes Irma y María en la playa Flamenco, principal atractivo de esta isla municipio, motivó un junte de voluntades que formuló y puso en marcha un proyecto de restauración que pretende no solo realzar la belleza natural del balneario, sino hacerlo más sostenible y resistente a futuros eventos atmosféricos.

Tan reciente como el pasado martes, un grupo de entidades públicas, privadas y comunitarias anunció que ya se han recaudado $1.6 millones para la iniciativa, que inició con la limpieza y remoción de escombros en la playa.

“Playa Flamenco, como es sabido, es el motor de la economía de Culebra. Pero sufrimos grandes daños por los huracanes; la playa estuvo cerrada por cinco o seis meses y el efecto fue devastador”, dijo María Coral Sánchez, directora ejecutiva de la Autoridad de Conservación y Desarrollo de Culebra (Acdec).

“Este proyecto de restauración y renovación es una gran noticia, pues las instalaciones (en Flamenco) fueron hechas en 1986 y no había habido grandes cambios desde entonces”, agregó.

La Acdec, creada por ley en 1975 y adscrita al Municipio de Culebra, tiene la responsabilidad de administrar y mantener la playa Flamenco, que recibe 700,000 visitantes –locales y extranjeros– anualmente.

Empero, el presupuesto de la corporación pública ha mermado en los últimos años, de $900,000 a $222,000, y no cuenta con los fondos necesarios para costear la restauración requerida tras los ciclones, admitió Sánchez.

Ante esa realidad, el Municipio de Culebra y la Fundación para un Mejor Puerto Rico firmaron un acuerdo de colaboración.

Mediante el acuerdo, la organización sin fines de lucro –con sede en esta isla municipio– reconstruirá las instalaciones y el entorno natural del balneario con el apoyo de donantes y socios. El ayuntamiento y la Acdec, por su parte, se comprometieron a hacer la playa autosuficiente y generar los fondos necesarios para mantenerla durante los próximos 20 años.

“Playa Flamenco ha sido reconocida como una de las mejores playas del mundo, pero nuestro objetivo es que sea la mejor. No hay otro lugar en Puerto Rico que dependa más del turismo que Culebra. Este proyecto no solo ayudará a Culebra y sus ciudadanos, sino a la economía de Puerto Rico. No tengo duda de que, una vez desarrollado, aumentará la cantidad de visitantes a la playa”, dijo el presidente de la Fundación y exsindicalista Dennis Rivera.

Indicó que, al momento, se realiza un estudio económico sobre cómo alcanzar los objetivos del acuerdo colaborativo entre el Municipio y la Fundación.
