Too noisy to enjoy–a musical assault

This is a gorgeous beach, and used to be my favorite place to visit: clear, warm, turquoise waters, sand that stretched along for somewhere between a kilometer and a mile (depending on who you ask) and very few people,no hi-rises only two places to stay at, just 2 or 3 stories high and tasteful, at one end of the beach, with camping at the far end–my idea of paradise, I dreamt of retiring here. That was 10 years ago. When I recently visited I was met by blaring reggaeton all day into the evening, on the beach and coming from yachts (which were a new phenomenon) parked in the water, apparently just there to party, no peace to be had. I had saved up all year for a restful vacation and instead spent a week wearing earplugs I usually use on public transportation–and they only muffled the sound a little. A crushing disappointment. I learned I could still enjoy the beach, however, by going out for a swim first thing in the morning–apparently reggaeton lovers are not early risers, thank god. Not enough to justify a trip there though, if you have to leave by 10 or 11–unless you’re into the music, or don’t care about music.

Absolutely beautiful!

Warm, clear waters. Even though the ferry and taxi areas were full, the beach was not very crowded and there was tons of space to pick from at the beach. They rent umbrellas but very limited stock. There are a couple of food stands with inexpensive options (cash at one and credit at the other).
Seaweed at the shore but not a problem in the water. Such an amazing experience and view.

All I can say is the Flamenco Beach I knew over the last 10 years is now gone. It’s now covered with sargassum seaweed and littered with trash. No one is maintaining the beach now that the park service has left. The park service used to maintain the campgrounds and beach. They have now been vacated because some corrupt authorities are now “refurbishing” Flamenco supposedly… They have been working on building new kiosks and “modernizing” the entire area for several years now. Mind you, the old kiosks survived hurricane Maria. As far as the locals are concerned, it’s all a big, corrupt money exchange. It’s really a tragedy. In the past I would park (which is now 9 dollars for 2 people and a golf cart) walk down the boardwalk and witness the most stunning view of natural beauty; shimmering sand, turquoise water. Its so changed. The water is still beautiful if you can find a spot to swim in that is not swimming with sargassum. Shameful the lack respect for this beautiful place.

Beautiful Beach… nothing else to do

I was very excited to travel to Flamenco after all of the great reviews but was slightly let down at the lack of things to do. If you plan accordingly you can have a great time. . just know that there are minimal restaurants if ANY and that things are a little drive away so make reservations to get a golf cart so you avoid trying to get taxis.

Most beautiful beach in the world! Absolutely gorgeous water .. it doesn’t even look real. The color is so beautiful. The beach is breathtaking. The way the palm trees line the beach and the shore is just stunning. Number one beach is Culebra and Puerto Rico!

Gorgeous but be conscious

Here are a few things I learned that might be helpful to know when planning your trip to Flamenco Beach, which is gorgeous and clean (side note there will be seaweed on the beach but not in the water). Currently there are 2 ferry trips per day. If you purchase a ferry ticket with chairs and umbrella for when you get to the beach, just be mindful that although the beach is open, the guys at the hut with the chairs and such are likely to be close by the time the second ferry arrives. When you arrive to Culebra, you have to figure out transportation from the dock to the other side of the island where the beach is, a taxi is going to cost you around $20, it is not in walking or hiking distance. Once done with your visit to the stunning crystal clear waters, you will need to again get transportation back to the docks where you have to wait for said ferry to return hours later. The shops and food places are likely to be closed and you will have to be patient. My recommendation would be to go on the earlier ferry ride so you can catch the afternoon ferry back and enjoy your evening elsewhere. It does not have nightlife.

Best beach for a day trip in Culebra

This beach is the best for families jn culebra probably the only one with some infrastructure on the island, has bathrooms and shower to get the sand off. White sand and a lot of plants from the sea on the shore. Clear blueish green waters. Barely any waves. Trees around the bech make good shadows.

Long sandy swimming beach with multiple amenities

Probably the most popular beach in Culebra, this long beach seemed to be the most populated but it did not feel crowded. There were food trucks and chair rentals and BATHROOMS. It is one of the loveliest beaches in the Caribbean.

WORTH IT AS A DAY TRIP?

We went to Culebra and Flamenco Beach as a day trip. While in PR we stayed in Luquillo and got our ferry tickets to Culebra days in advance. The Culebra trip was 5/31/22. After arriving early, parking and catching the short shuttle our 9:30a ferry didn’t leave until 10. The website said a 45 min ride…we docked at Culebra at 11:30a. Flamenco Beach was a cab or golf cart ride away and we got onto the beach around 12:15. Had to drop off our golf cart by 4:30 and we were at the dock at 5 and waited for the 5:30 return ferry. Again we didn’t get off the boat at Ceiba until 7:20 and not out of the parking area until 7:40. Between ferry rides, and waiting we spent more than 5 hours getting to and from Culebra. There may have been faster boats, but we did not get a choice in boat. And… some folks got sick on the boat ride out and that ride was not pleasant (ride back was better).

Flamenco was a really beautiful beach and Tamarindo was the best snorkeling we did in PR.

However, for the hours of travel and waiting we would not do Culebra as a day trip again. Staying for a couple days in the little island might be the way to go.

Be careful

Well , they don’t tell you that you have to buy ferry tickets months in advance since they’re limited. We lost the trip because we didn’t know and according to their rules there’s no money need back. Some one called ( Very nice person ) and said they would try to resale our tickets ( which are on high demand) it’s hard to get in one of these tours. We haven’t heard anything from them soo we figured no money will be refunded to us. Sad
They need to let people know about the ferry tickets ( book tickets in advance ) also it would be if refunds are granted especially if it’s not due to negligence on the customer side.

Everything You Need to Know About Planning the Perfect Visit to Flamenco Beach in Puerto Rico

Flamenco Beach is consistently ranked as one of the top beaches in the world. It is home to a perfect white sandy beach cove and calm, turquoise waters. We spent time at Flamenco Beach during our last vacation to Puerto Rico and had a great time. The beach is perfect for families and a beautiful place to spend the day.

Where is Flamenco Beach?

Flamenco Beach is on Culebra Island in Puerto Rico. Flamenco Beach is on the north side of Culebra. The island is 17 miles off the east coast of Puerto Rico.

Why is Flamenco Beach so popular?

Flamenco Beach is consistently ranked as one of the top beaches in the world. What makes Flamenco Beach so popular is the stunning beach and beautiful ocean.

The water is calm and the most perfect turquoise color. The calm water and shallow depth make it popular for snorkeling and swimming, especially for families. The sand is a beautiful white color and is very fine. It is gorgeous!

Is Flamenco Beach worth visiting?

If you are going to be in Puerto Rico for at least three days, we would recommend making the trip out to Flamenco Beach. It is such a beautiful island and a great way to experience the beautiful beaches in Puerto Rico.

How do I get to Flamenco Beach?

If you are visiting Flamenco Beach from the main island of Puerto Rico there are two main ways of getting there – by ferry or by plane. The ferry is WAY cheaper and gives you more flexibility in your departure and return times. Flights take less time out of your day.

If you are going on any tours (SEE OUR TOUR RECS BELOW) often times they will arrange the transportation for you. If you are nervous or unsure about how to get there, a tour may be a good option for you.

Flights to Culebra

There are two options for flights. The first option is flying out of Ceiba. Ceiba is about an hour west of San Juan. If you have a rental car and want to save some money, this is going to be your cheapest flight option. Round trip flights through Air Flamenco range in price but start at about $90.

If you don’t want to worry about getting over to Ceiba, flights are available from the San Juan International Airport which is just outside San Juan. Flights vary quite a bit based on the day, but tickets start at about $180.

Ferry to Flamenco Beach

The ferry is run out of the Ceiba ferry terminal which is about an hour east of San Juan. The ride to Culebra Island is about 45 minutes. If you have a tendency to suffer from motion sickness, be sure to bring some Dramamine or other remedies. The water is rough and multiple people in our group got pretty sick.

The ferry ticket price is $4.50 for a round trip ticket and is $2.25 for a one-way ticket.

The other thing to be aware of is there is a passenger ferry and a cargo ferry. The cargo ferry is much slower, so you don’t have to worry about motion sickness. We took the cargo ferry back to Ceiba and no one got sick. The passenger ferries and cargo ferries do operate on different schedules so keep that in mind.

The ferry times do vary by season so be sure to check the ferry schedule before planning your trip to Flamenco Beach. The ferries do fill up so you will want to get there AT LEAST 30 minutes before the ferry leaves but get there an hour early if you can.

We were able to get on the departure time we wanted but the return time was sold out, so we ended up coming back later than we originally wanted to.

How far is Flamenco Beach from the ferry?

Flamenco Beach is about three miles from the ferry terminal on Culebra Island.

How to get to Flamenco Beach from Dewey Ferry Terminal

When you get off the ferry, there is a shared van that will take you over to the beach. The cost per person for the van ride is $6 and is typically paid in cash. There are lots of different vans waiting so just pick one and go.

If you want a little more control over your trip to Culebra and Flamenco Beach you can rent a jeep or golf cart from Carlos Jeep Rental. If you are visiting with kids who need to be in car seats, you will need to rent a jeep. We rented a Jeep and had a great time exploring the beach on our schedule.

Access Fee: $5 parking from 6 am to 6 pm

Flamenco Beach Amenities

Restrooms are available on-site and are open 24/7. There are water tanks along the walkway throughout the beach that have fresh water in them. You can also purchase water at any of the food kiosks.

There are outdoor showers that are open from 4 pm to 7 pm. There are also changing rooms you can use.

Flamenco Beach Rentals

Once you get to Flamenco Beach, there are a number of different kiosks that rent beach gear like chairs, umbrellas, and camping gear. There was also a truck and trailer just outside the entrance also renting gear. Chair and umbrella rentals are about $5 each.

The Rent City/Colmado kiosk rents tents, air mattresses, and some other camping gear. The nightly rate for renting a tent is around $20. You can also purchase a hammock here for around $25. They also sell snorkeling gear, bodyboards, and hats.

When renting gear, just keep in mind the time the gear needs to be returned because lots of them close by 5 pm.

Dining at Flamenco Beach

Near the parking area, there are a few different food kiosks. They sell food, drinks, and snacks. The operating hours for these kiosks do vary and some say they are inconsistent.

Flamenco Pizza is usually open during lunch and during the busy season. They sell pizza and sandwiches. Rice and beans are sold at a few of the kiosks along with seafood, traditional Puerto Rican plates as well as burritos, burgers, and smoothies.

There are picnic tables by the kiosks or you can take your lunch down to the beach.

Flamenco Beach Snorkeling

One of the best places to snorkel in Puerto Rico is on Culebra. The best place to snorkel is on the east side of the bay or the beaches and coves facing the west. There are two small rock jetties near the end of the beach. This is where the sand bends and the rocks begin.

There is a lot of coral to see in this area. There will be some sea life but depending on the day, there may not be as much. You can expect to see stingrays in the sandy area and turtles in the grasses.

There is another healthy reef just out from the tank on the beach.

Tanks on the Beach

Along the beach and in the brush, there are some old, rusting World War tanks. In 1901, President Roosevelt gave the public lands on Culebra to the Navy. It was used for bombing practice in 1936. Eventually, the residents of the island did not appreciate the Navy’s use of the island which led to the Navy evacuating the island by 1975.

The Navy left behind a lot of their equipment including several of the large tanks that you can see today. The tanks were too large to move so they have remained on the beach. They have started to rust and have been painted by visitors to the beach.

The tanks are along the shore on the far west side of the beach. One of the tanks sits right at the water and there are a few more back in the trees.

Muellecito Access Point

The Muellecito Access Point is a second public beach access point to Flamenco Beach. There is no access fee but there are no amenities here. This is a good place to visit if you are looking to escape the crowds or snorkel.

You will want a jeep or high clearance vehicle to drive here though. The road is rough but is drivable.

There are a number of tour companies to help you explore Flamenco Beach. No matter how you want to explore Culebra and Flamenco Beach, there are lots of tours that can make your trip out to Culebra so much easier!

Culebra Kayak and Snorkel Tour

One of the best ways to experience the beauty of Culebra Island is on a Kayak & Snorkel with Turtles Adventure.

This tour will take you to two beautiful beaches on Culebra. You will start your journey at Tamarindo Beach and kayak into the beautiful Luis Pena Marine Reserve. There are amazing coral reefs here and lots of seagrass beds where the turtles like to hang out.

Then you will head over to beautiful Flamenco Beach where you can get lunch if you didn’t bring one with you. Snacks and all equipment are included in the tour as well as a digital photo album of your day trip.

Can you stay at Flamenco Beach?

The only option for staying right on Flamenco Beach is to camp. However, within a 10-minute drive, there are a lot of hotels and private villa rental options.

Camping at The Beach

The camping area at the beach is on the north shore. There are spots for about 400 tents. When we visited in January, the camping area was not very full. The camping area is just a few steps away from the ocean and is a beautiful area of the beach.

If you have the camping gear with you or you are willing to rent the gear, we highly recommend camping at the beach. It is so pretty and you will get to experience the beach in the evenings and mornings without the tourist rush during the day.

Open fires are not permitted in the campground but there are BBQ pits you can use with charcoal. The nightly charge is $20 for up to six people. There are showers on-site as well.

Where to Stay Near Flamenco Beach?

The island of Culebra has several hotels and private villas to rent. If you can stay at least a night you will get a much more local feel for the island instead of being in the tourist rush just going to Flamenco Beach. Visiting Flamenco Beach outside of the busy tourist hours is amazing!

TIP: If you are able to spend more time on the island of Culebra, we highly recommend it. It is a small, charming island with lots of beautiful beaches and areas to explore.

Clean beach with beautiful blue water. To the west of Flamenco Beach is an area that is up to 1975 was used for joint military exercises of the US Navy and US Marine Corps. Many military vehicles, including tanks, remained here as exhibits in the open. Some of the tanks are decorated with colorful graffiti and create a unique landscape against the backdrop of a tropical beach.

Indeed, one of the best…

Spent three days on Culebra, right on the beach – there is a small hotel there, very comfortable – cottages right next to the water.

The beach is very impressive, but there are too many vacationers, they come with belongings . .. Only early in the morning, before no one arrives, on the virgin sand at sunrise … It’s just unforgettable)

Clear water, quite a large area of well-groomed sand, paid umbrellas and sun loungers are available. You can take two deck chairs and an umbrella for $ 20, you can bargain for one deck chair for 5. Coconuts are quite decent at 5%. In the city you can buy for $ 2. In general, nice, but after the Maldives and the Seychelles is not impressive. Lots of noisy people too.

This was one of the first Caribbean cruise beaches. And I must admit that one of the worst. It is not clear who and for what merits included this beach in the top 10 in the world.

Party paradise 2015

Great beach. There is a campsite nearby!
You can rent a tent and spend the night on the shores of paradise.
Attention: noisy youth is coming! If you get on the weekend, then be prepared for the fact that young people will not let you sleep. Night festivities with loud music, but at the same time with local flavor are provided to you.

Stunning beach I don’t eat rubbish, the Widow slinks in dragstores for 35 dollars, which adds even more charm to the beach .. there is a funny American tank gnawed by the tropics)

Unique beach

We were on the weekend so there were a lot of locals on the beach. You can move away from the center of the beach and there will be fewer vacationers near you. There is wind and small waves. From the side of the tank flocks of pelicans fly and fish – it is interesting to watch them. Minibuses from the beach to the city run until 18-00 ($ 3 per person one way)

the best beach in Puerto Rico

2014 • Family vacation

The day was not very sunny, but warm.
The water is pure, transparent, amazing. We swam for 6 hours, we were satisfied.
The beach is cleaned, there are many cafes, there is a shower and a toilet.

Colonial Puerto Rico (part 4) – The circle is complete

Before I returned to San Juan a few more places in southern Puerto Rico that I wanted to visit. But Christmas was approaching and visiting the Flamenco beach could, according to the recommendations of the locals, become problematic. Therefore, I, waking up before sunrise, make a 3-hour dash and from Parguera drive half the island to the Ceiba terminal, from where ferries go to the islands of Culebra and Vieges. Nearby there is an airport of the same name to fly in 15 minutes, but it will cost $ 50 against some ridiculous $ 2 for the ferry. And yes, it’s more fun.

It’s very comfortable here, they’ll also give out bags if you suddenly get seasick.

After arriving on the island, I jump on the shuttle bus, dangling my legs, and rush to the beach with the first group of vacationers.

The entry fee to the beach is also symbolic, a few dollars.

Well, here I thought, on the most popular beach, there will be a crowd of people and tourism.

No matter how! Cats are lazily bored in empty areas

Only one of a couple of eateries is open, the rest are closed . .. and this is the day before Christmas!

But what an amazing beach with turquoise water. And not a soul!

The first visitors immediately put their umbrellas in and run into the water. Nothing special at all..

If you want to sunbathe and swim for the whole day – then you are definitely here! Just better to take food and entertainment with you.

Near the road to the beach there is such a gate. You can’t go for them like, so we go there. I was recommended that there is a beautiful wild beach. Let’s go.

After 15 minutes of walking I go out to a beautiful bay. A lonely yacht, and next to it is a family swimming in masks. Although there is not so much clean sand, there are no waves at all and the water is not muddy. After sailing a little, you can enjoy corals, jellyfish and schools of fish even with a simple snorkel and fins!

The water is clear as a tear, you can see it like in a swimming pool!

After swimming, I walk along the shore watching the hermit crab looking for something to eat.

Seeing me, he instantly hides

And slowly creeps out again, making sure that there is no one around

Having had a good rest, I return back, right at sunset.

I’m going to San Juan where I will spend the remaining two nights at the third couchsurfing host in the city.

I decide to take a little walk in the old part of San Juan

Locals and sometimes tourists walk lonely through the streets. Still, most tourists live near the beaches, and not in San Juan.

I go to a cafe for dinner.

Very colorful and tasty. Everything is decorated, because tomorrow is Christmas!

Returning to the car, I find a parking ticket. I don’t understand anything, because I parked where it is allowed. Later they tell me that this is such a way to make money on tourists – it turns out that only local residents living here can park in this area after 7 pm. And not a single warning anywhere!

And in such a cozy room I spend the night for free. Thank you CouchSurfing and my host!

Morning in San Juan, houses merrily decorated for Christmas

Who needs car washes?

Today is Christmas, so I decide to get away from the crowds, returning to the southern part of the island, where I didn’t go yesterday in a hurry to visit Flamenco. On Google Maps, I found the La Cueva Del Indio cave, with another portion of Indian rock paintings, and decided to go there. There was no direct access to the cave and I went along the beach

Judging by the map, it took about 30 minutes to walk. I was sure that it was possible to get there normally, otherwise who would publish such a place on the map? How wrong I was…

At first everything was wonderful. Wild beach, coconut palm trees.

Not a single person around.

Then the beach abruptly ended and stones and rocks began to appear. At first it was fun to jump on them

Then to climb and climb…

Catching moments between the waves

In the end, I really had to strain all my long-forgotten climbing abilities. The main thing: do not look down!

As a result, by some miracle, having reached a point on the map, I, oddly enough, did not find any cave. It became funny when I, scrolling through the comments in Google Maps, saw the very last one saying that “The point on the map is set incorrectly.” Ha ha, the real cave, only later found it, was a few kilometers from the one indicated on the map

But the walk turned out to be very good, with elements of crossfit! And most importantly – these are wonderful places and views!

Someday I will definitely take a walk here again

Having got out of the beach, I continue my way along the coast to the north, to the only reserve of trees of the Pterocarpus species in Puerto Rico

The Dorado Pterocarpus Forest Area (DPFNPA) is located in the northwestern limits of the municipality of Dorado, on the northern coast of Puerto Rico. This is a protected nature reserve, in fact it is a swamp in which Pterocarpus trees can grow. Due to the fact that this is a swamp, walking through this “forest” is possible only along special paths on stilts. What was my disappointment when, having arrived at the place, it turned out that the park was closed. More precisely, the entrance was simply blocked across by a beam. Without hesitation, I jumped over it and went inside. After a couple of turns, it immediately became clear why the park was closed.

Apparently, it was never restored after the hurricane and the swamp slowly begins to acquire its original appearance

Sometimes these trees are called the tree of dragon’s blood. The locals call it the Palo de Pollo tree or the Blood Tree because of the red color of the sap and the way the decaying leaves can turn the surrounding water red.

The tree can grow very large, with supporting roots growing from the trunk along the ground. These spreading roots can grow very wide and act to anchor the tree without growing deep.

This wetland is constantly replenished by brackish water currents from tides, rain and runoff. It is home to 44 species of flora and 52 species of fauna, many of which are exclusive to this forest. Although I only met spiders.

But we must pay tribute, the air here is very clean, rich and simply delicious. Walking in the dense shade, you feel a pleasant coolness, although the day is very hot.

I hope everything will be fixed here soon, the place is very interesting. But again, no one distracted from the walk

We continue to the largest park in Puerto Rico – El Yunque rainforest.

I enter the forest and slowly climb the road for another 20 minutes.

Around the riot of colors, greenery and flowers.

This is the only rainforest in the US National Park System.

The Taíno Arawak Indians believed that the god of happiness lives in El Yunque. It is understandable, from sweet smells literally dizzy

First stop at the Yokahú tower. This is one of two observation towers located in the park. Built in 1963, it is considered to have the best view. Another tower, Mount Britton, is located at a higher height. As a result, the view from it is often obscured by cloud cover. And it takes a very long time to climb. Therefore, I enjoy the view from the one that is closer

There will be several waterfalls further along the road, but I liked the cascade called Juan Diego Falls

As you can see, at first it is small, and there are usually many tourists splashing their feet here.

If you stand directly under it, then a chop from the back is provided in 5 minutes.

But the feeling is really unforgettable. The water is warm and clean. I want to take this shower again and again!

Having had a rest in this refreshing forest, it is already dark when I return to my lodging for the night. The next day I have a flight, so I don’t leave the city anywhere, but I walk around

Cats here, of course, of all stripes and colors, do not get tired of making me happy!
