All About Flamenco Beach

Flamenco Beach boasts a spectacular setting on the northwestern side of the island of Culebra, drawing scuba divers and beachcombers to its white sand and sparkling turquoise waves. One of the most popular beaches in Puerto Rico, the coral-pink-tinted shoreline is accessed by a wooden boardwalk fringed by lush vegetation, while its postcard-perfect expanse is surrounded by rolling hills and palm trees swaying in the balmy ocean air.

Just offshore, you can snorkel near a vibrant coral reef among manta rays and parrot fish. If you want to explore more of the shoreline, you can kayak or paddleboard through the gentle surf, or head out on a catamaran to travel in style on a sun-drenched afternoon. The beach’s tranquil and partially shallow waters make it a great swimming spot for people of all ages and skill levels. There is a food kiosk near the beach in case you get hungry, but the nearby town of Culebra, less than a 10-minute drive from Flamenco Beach, has a wide range of dining options, whether you’re in the mood for a seafood platter or a quick roadside empanadilla.

When is the best time to stay in a vacation rental in Flamenco Beach?

Thanks to the Caribbean’s warm, dry weather, November to March is generally the best time to book vacation rentals in Flamenco Beach, especially if you want to spend the day basking in the sun. The beach will be at its busiest during this time. Spring and summer are generally more humid and can see an increased amount of rainfall. However, keep in mind that during the rainy season, showers may only last for 30 minutes or so, and things soon dry out. This stretch of coastline is a popular weekend getaway for San Juan residents, so head here on a weekday for the best chance of having the gentle surf to yourself.

What are the top things to do in Flamenco Beach?

Water sports

Flamenco Beach is famous for its beautiful, calm, and clear water, which makes it a favored spot for water sports. You can go swimming in the warm water, snorkeling among the coral reefs just below the surface, and kayaking or paddleboarding along the shoreline.

Monte Resaca

A ten-minute drive southeast takes you around the western edge of Laguna del Flamenco to the start of a 40-minute trek up to the island’s highest point and down the other side to Playa Resaca’s blend of sugary sand and sparkling waves. You’ll need appropriate footwear and plenty of water for the ascent, where you’re likely to have to scramble over a few boulders. You might also encounter rare lizards in the undergrowth.

Reserva Natural Canal Luis Peña

This natural wildlife refuge is around a 30-minute walk from Flamenco Beach. It is home to diverse habitats including protected coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds, making this a popular spot for kayaking and snorkeling.

Flamenco Beach Puerto Rico Wedding with Sheetal & John

John and Sheetal are pretty much two of the most awesome people you could ever meet. Their wedding on Flamenco Beach in Puerto Rico was so special and intimate. From our first Skype chat we knew that we would be a good fit for their wedding on Culebra Island. They are both world travelers that love hiking, nature, and have the right spirit for exploration. Greg and I both share a passion for nature and the outdoors so we immediately connected with John and Sheetal. As wedding photographers in Puerto Rico we are so lucky to have such a diverse and rich landscapes to choose from for wedding photography. After going over a few options we decided on a Sunrise couples session at Playa Soldado. It is a beautiful secluded beach which can only be accessed on foot via a small trail. Cloudy skies and early morning light made for a beautiful session.

The following day we met up with them and their wedding party for some beach games at Flamenco Beach, ranked the third most beautiful beach in the world. For a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico Flamenco beach is a dream come true with its crystal clear turquoise waters and lush green coastline. There truly was a spirit of care free fun that carried through out the day.

After a moving ceremony the couple sat down for a delicious all vegan dinner severed right on the beach catered by the Homeless Dog Cafe. After that they danced the night away during their reception at Flamenco Beach. The wedding was coordinated and catered by Peri Watterson Lewis of the Homeless dog cafe.

As a photographers, we are always looking at light. While photographing different weddings in Puerto Rico we see different light at different venues and locations. Somehow the light in Culebra island always has a rich warm glow. The turquoise blue water is so breathtaking. Every time we go and walk out onto the beach we remark that it’s so spectacular  and feels like we are seeing it for the first time all over again.

After delivering our collection of photos to the couple, John wrote us this beautiful poem. His words truly capture the spirit of a Culebra wedding:

It must have been a borrowed dream

From a children’s book illustrator

This vision that lingers

of the finely dressed, sand-cruising slew

Wreathed with sun parasols and floating bubbles

Awaiting her entrance

And what lured them there

Was it a combination of six dice and gibberish incantation—“FARKLE!”

Or the common trauma of a nightbound village plagued by murderous mafia,

Perhaps a pulse hidden in the heart of the tropical island

That conjured such kinship leading up to her eventual arrival,

The endearments passing between them like

The casual swish of a waterborne hand

Yielding a swirl of dinoflagellate sparks

When our congregation was complete on the cathedral of sand

She visited us in the form of an angel, vested with secret gravity

Drawing us vertical, concentrating light, stirring emotion,

And I was reminded of her hand in imagining us there

That night we gathered our glow under a clear tent

As the sky blushed like watermelon juice and the stars leaned out

Over the waves lain like sheets on a bed of beach,

Agog with dance, we seemed to celebrate

Not just the union of two people

But a broadening of family that married many more

It could have been a borrowed dream,

So stark the contrast between that world and this one,

I have to find comfort in the photographs, a gold ring,

And the angel, yet to resume her earthly form, snoring beside me.

Puerto Rico’s Culebra Island, surrounded by turquoise waters and white sand beaches, is the perfect example of a stunning Caribbean landscape. Its beautiful beaches and lush vegetation attract tourists from all over the world. But this idyllic Caribbean paradise has some unexpected backdrops in the form of rusting World War II tanks. nine0005

In 1901, after Spain ceded Puerto Rico to the United States, President Theodore Roosevelt allocated all land on Culebra to the Navy. These lands were used for training landings and ground maneuvers, and starting in 1936, for practicing bombing. Although there was no official base on the island, a large amount of equipment and weapons were transferred there, and bombing exercises continued for decades. In 1969, as Navy pilots prepared for the Vietnam War, missiles rained down on the island for 228 days. nine0005

This proximity to the army did not please the locals, and when the military tried to evacuate the entire population, they began to resist. In the summer of 1970, the people of Culebra began non-violent protests to end the occupation of the island by the army. For seven months they marched, staged sit-ins and set up barricades, and finally the Navy agreed to phase out the use of the island as a testing ground.
