About the author
Damian de la Bandera was born in 1520. His father was the hidalgo Pedro de la Bandera, one of the first conquistadors in the province of Tierra Firme (Panama). At first he was in Santo Domingo (Island of Hispaniola), where he observed the arrival of ships with Indian slaves from Cubagua, but then he moved to Panama, and from there to Peru. With Captain Juan de Olmos, he served on a campaign in Las Esmeraldas, then moved to Lima, where he was a soldier with Viceroy Blasco Nunez Vela during the campaign of Captain Pablo de Meneses. After the capture of the governor and the arrival of Gonzalo Pizarro, he moved to Cuzco, but in this city Francisco de Carvajal obliged him to serve him against Lope de Mendoza, who had rebelled in Charcas. Already during the campaign, he conspired with Pedro de Avendaño, Francisco Rodriguez de Matamoros and other supporters, and they secretly sent a message to Lope de Mendoza about the forces of the Andean Devil, also saying that they would kill him. Indeed, on the night of the defeat at Pocona, Damian de la Bandera, together with Rodriguez de Matamoros, fired two shots at him from an arquebus, with only one shot hitting the buttock.
