Cuando se hayan fundido los polos y hayan retrocedido las playas y naveguen los barcos por el canal Joan de Borbó, antiguo paseo de ídem, igual, quién sabe, verán de todas maneras los viajeros las mismas banderas que hoy cuelgan de los balcones, posiblemente hechas jirones, y se preguntarán qué son, qué representan, banderas de qué. Quizá sean barcos en busca de un último rastro de vida, en un mundo arrasado por el calor, y no serán viajeros sino exploradores, una misión científica, ¿por qué no? Pero igual: las banderas azules y amarillas ondearán con la melancolía debida a los paisajes arruinados por el apocalipsis.

Azules, sí. Y amarillas.

Tiene esa rareza el paseo que hoy todavía conduce hasta la playa, y la tiene el barrio de la Barceloneta en general: en los balcones ondean banderas, como ondean en el resto de la ciudad, pero la más popular es la del barrio, azul y amarilla y con su escudo en la mitad. En el paseo que la hecatombe volverá canal hay colgadas una cincuentena, y en las callejuelas interiores abundan y se confunden con la ropa puesta a secar. No hay que descartar que sea una anomalía de territorio insular, pues todos tienen la suya y la Barceloneta es una isla, como todo el mundo sabe. No es coincidencia, por otra parte, que las banderas hayan aparecido en los momentos más feroces del enfado contra el turismo, y en general contra el modelo de ciudad. Y en cualquier caso, está lo de siempre con las banderas: la identidad.

Anomalía llama a anomalía, y tal vez la más cautivadora de las banderas de la Barceloneta es que su creador vive: tiene 71 años, fue marinero toda la vida y un día, hace un cuarto de siglo, decidió que le iba a dar una enseña a su barrio. “Se iban a hacer los Juegos Olímpicos y yo vi que estaban tirando toda la Barceloneta y la estaban haciendo nueva, y que se estaban cargando todo el encanto del barrio pescador. Pensé que al cabo del tiempo ni siquiera se sabría que había sido un barrio de pescadores. Y decidí hacer la bandera”. El hombre que creó una bandera se llama Francisco López Tey, y aunque nació y vivió la mayor parte de su vida en la Barceloneta hace poco se mudó a la calle de Robadors, en el Raval: su piso es fácil de identificar porque es el único del viejo barrio chino donde ondea el pabellón insular.

“Bueno, en realidad hay un chaval amigo que también vivió en la Barceloneta y que también tiene una bandera en el balcón. Pero aparte de él y de mí no hay nadie más”.

Hace muchos años, motu proprio, López Tey empezó una infatigable recopilación de documentos del barrio que a la postre dio lugar a la creación del Arxiu Popular de la Barceloneta; motu proprio también, y envalentonado en parte por los privilegiados conocimientos del barrio que había obtenido de aquel proyecto, decidió hacer la bandera. “Primero puse el azul del agua y el amarillo de la arena. Luego, en el escudo, una barca latina, que era la que usaban los pescadores, y el faro de la Barceloneta, que estaba donde está ahora la Torre del Reloj, además de la bandera de Sant Jordi y la catalana”. De su bolsillo, López Tey mandó hacer una decena de banderas, las repartió por las calles engalanadas para la fiesta mayor del barrio y guardó una para el sacerdote de la iglesia, “con un escrito donde quedaron explicadas las razones para hacerla”. La bandera tuvo una primera vida en los 90 pero luego cayó en el olvido, de la manera melancólica en que le puede pasar algo así a una bandera, y hace un par de años resucitó a su segunda vida. “Cuando empezó lo del turismo me llamó el presidente de la asociación de vecinos y me dijo si podía utilizarla, y yo le dije que sí, claro”.

Muchos conocen a López Tey en la Barceloneta, pero no tantos saben que es el autor de la bandera. Un día, de hecho, tuvo que ir a la redacción del periódico del barrio a pedir una rectificación, cuando salió publicado que la habían creado “los chicos del archivo”. Nimiedades. Ahora, como todo artista cuando triunfa su trabajo, López Tey se llena de orgullo cada vez que va a su viejo barrio y ve su obra por doquier.

Comparten los mismos colores, el azul y el amarillo, en una división horizontal milimétrica, exacta: la mitad para uno, la otra mitad para el otro. Es la bandera que cuelga de la mayoría de balcones del barrio de la Barceloneta, el barrio marítimo por excelencia de la capital catalana, y es calcada a la de Ucrania. Mismos tonos, igual modelo, salvo un escudo en medio con cuatro elementos.

La enseña ideada entre amigos para protestar contra las obras que conllevaban los Juegos Olímpicos de 1992 y que ahora sirve para reivindicar la identidad del barrio frente al turismo de masas es casi igual que la ucraniana. ¿Por qué? Las apariencias engañan: nada tienen que ver.

La historia de la bandera de la Barceloneta se remonta a finales de los ochenta. El 17 de octubre de 1986 en Lausanne, el entonces presidente del COI, Juan Antonio Samaranch, pronunció las palabras mágicas: “À la ville de… Barcelona”. Los Juegos Olímpicos del 92, seis años después, se celebrarían en la capital catalana, una decisión que acabaría transformando para siempre la ciudad. Barcelona se abrió al mar, se ideó el puerto Olímpico, la Villa Olímpica, se levantaron barrios de nuevo -véase Bogatell o Poblenou- y el frente marítimo se remodeló por completo.

Una revolución que afectó de lleno al barrio de la Barceloneta, antiguamente un islote llamado Maians, territorio de pescadores. Fue entonces cuando uno de sus vecinos, Francisco López Tey, ideó una enseña para protestar contra las obras que amenazan el frente litoral, como recoge el libro “Historias de la historia pequeña de Barcelona” y como el propio López Tey relató en una entrevista hace unos años en el “El Periódico de Catalunya” desvelando el misterio.

Con el fervor de los JJOO, la bandera apenas tuvo recorrido y se quedó en una anécdota que años después volvió a ver la luz: la Barceloneta se convirtió en una de las cunas del turismo de borrachera, especialmente a partir de 2010, el precio de los alquileres saltó por los aires y los vecinos desempolvaron una vieja enseña para reivindicar la identidad del barrio. El fin era protestar contra el incivismo que cada verano inundaba el litoral.

Es la bandera azul y amarilla, azul por el mar y dorada por la arena. Y en medio, un escudo con una barca latina, la de los pescadores; el antiguo faro de la Barceloneta, donde ahora está la Torre del Reloj; la bandera de Sant Jordi de la ciudad; y la senyera catalana con las cuatro barras. La enseña cuelga de muchos de los apartamentos del barrio, los llamados “cuartos de piso” de 30 metros cuadrados característicos de la zona y con otra historia detrás.

De hecho, la Barceloneta era –y sigue siendo- uno de los únicos barrios donde se ven banderas distintas a la “estelada” o la “rojigualda”. Una simbología que se convirtió en noticia sobre todo a raíz del estallido del “pocés” en otoño de 2017, con varios periodistas y reporteros gráficos en busca del significado de la enseña que cuelga de sus balcones.

built in the 18th century and perfectly preserved to this day, and in the remaining two – the symbols familiar to us from the flag of Barcelona: four red stripes on a gold background and the cross of St.
George.

Thus, Barceloneta, albeit without much desire, nevertheless recognizes that it is one of the districts of Barcelona. I say this without any irony: everyone is well aware of the tendency of the Catalans to
independence from everything and everyone – so Barceloneta has always been perceived by local residents as a separate settlement.

There are still many tourists, but not as many as, for example, in July. Every morning we went to the beach for breakfast and watched how the approaching autumn fought against the summer that did not want to leave.

4. Obligatory Barcelona ritual: breakfast in chiringuito. Chiringuito is a cafe on the beach, where you can come in the morning for a cup of coffee, and in the afternoon for lunch, but in the evening there is music and cocktails.

5. What is served for breakfast? I chose a croissant, orange juice and berry yogurt. I always miss Madrid breakfasts in Barcelona with tostada, toasted bread with fresh tomatoes, and coffee with milk.

There are people who help disabled people swim: there are special hours, there are lifts with which a person can be moved from a wheelchair to a special wheelchair, which the staff then rolls into the water and lets the person swim, and then takes it back. 15. The embankment is an ideal place for sports. It’s amazing to think that the Olympics’92 was nothing here! The city did not actually have access to the sea, the entire coastline was occupied by the port.

16. The beach, by the way, has a blue flag for cleanliness. The water in September was 24 degrees. Do not look that there are few people: I go swimming in the morning, and the Spaniards come closer to 12 o’clock.

21. A characteristic feature of Barceloneta is grandmothers sitting on chairs at the door to the apartment. They sit all day, from morning to evening, watching, guarding, providing a sense of stability, like all the grandmothers of the world.
