“Puerto Rico, my heart’s devotion…” As a child, I was entranced by Rita Moreno singing these words as Anita in the Academy Award-winning film, West Side Story. Of course, Anita goes on to diss her homeland and professes her love to another—the isle of Manhattan—but when I finally got the chance to visit Puerto Rico myself, I realized how wrong she was. I’m with Bernardo on this: “I like the city of San Juan!”

The 1961 film, revived in theaters this past Friday, was my first technicolored onscreen impression of Anita’s—and my father’s—homeland. Instead of fair Verona, playwright Arthur Laurents’s modernized tale of Romeo and Juliet takes place in the concrete jungles of New York City. The rivaling families are knife-wielding gangs—the Puerto Rican Sharks for Capulets; Polish-American Jets for Montagues. “Two households, both alike in dignity…”

The first time I visited Puerto Rico, it had been three years since Hurricane Maria. Driving through the countryside, there were still remnants of what was considered the worst natural disaster in Puerto Rico’s history. I saw blue tarps fastened to roofs and bare trees steadily growing back to their former emerald glory. Visiting my family in Cayey, I heard stories of how loud the winds were. How, walking out the next morning to see the damage, it appeared the rainforest had been burned, robbed of all vegetation. No power for five months. Over a game of dominos at my grandfather’s house and fresh papaya plucked from mi Tia Noida and Efrain’s backyard, the stories were similar but always ended with a faint smile,  a “things could’ve been a lot worse.” 

The capital city of San Juan had mended well. Along the coast, especially in the touristy parts of Condado, the area was largely rebuilt. Resident artist (and professional tour guide) Blanca Marina Grant Rivera agreed. “The change in ‘el Viejo San Juan’ has been very drastic, nothing comparable to the rest of the island, but completely changed either way. It’s very sad because a lot of shops and businesses have closed, including ‘El Nuyorican,’ which was a popular jazz club, due to lack of business after the hurricane. You can see the efforts of restoring the old town, but it will never be the same, of course. ” Still, hopes were high as the city continued to heal, Rivera said. “You can see the charm in our people and the locals who have stayed behind and continued what they have always done; work hard and grow with what little resources they have.”

Opened in 1902, the mainstay of La Bombonera is the pan de Mallorca dish: a sweet-savory mashup in the form of a melty swiss cheese, egg, and ham sandwich encased in buttery sweet bread and sprinkled with powdered sugar. Pair it with a cup of freshly squeezed orange juice or a café con leche to start the day–or to remedy yourself after a night out. There was a bit of a line when I first arrived, but it was quick and worth the wait.

A Russian doll of a spot, La Factoría reveals a different layer—and bar—on each floor. When you first enter, you’re greeted with a polite speakeasy feel, complete with a puffy couch in the corner and bartenders performing drinks rather than just serving them. I ordered a lavender mule so pretty, a couple behind me immediately requested the same. Los Hijos de Borinquen is another cocktail with a cult following. As you go deeper into the boozy labyrinth, the light gets dimmer and the music switches from light jazz to bass-thumping club and then live Spanish beats, where patrons can salsa the night away.
