Compared to other countries, Bolivia is not so popular with tourists.
On the one hand, this makes it possible to preserve the beauty of the unique wildlife and historical sites. However, the presence of such a variety of amazing places cannot go unnoticed. This country has a huge potential for building interesting and educational trips. Next, consider the sights of Bolivia in more detail.

1. Salar de Uyuni
This largest salt marsh in the world is considered one of the main attractions of Bolivia. There is a salt lake at an altitude of 3650 meters above sea level in the territory bordering Chile and Argentina. Thousands of tourists come here to look at the mirror-like surface of the water and pink flamingos. The greatest chances to see the largest mirror fall in February and March – during the season of heavy rainfall. The surface of the reservoir is so flat that it can be used to calibrate satellites launched into orbit. It is worth knowing that it is dangerous to move around the lake on your own, without knowledge of the area.
2. Death Road
This dangerous road connecting La Paz and Coroico was built in the 1930s during the Chaco War. Every year, about 25 cars crash here and up to 200 people die. Steep winding slopes and muddy surfaces contribute to this. Only the first 20 km are covered with asphalt. way, and it is already impossible for two cars to pass on it. During the rainy season, visibility is significantly reduced, and in summer, rockfalls are a big threat. The road is rarely used by the local population and attracts more tourists and fans of extreme driving.
3. Valley of the Moon
This natural attraction in Bolivia got its name from the stone landscape, reminiscent of an alien landscape. Craters and canyons, winding labyrinths are loved by tourists for hiking and cycling. The relief of the area was formed under the influence of heavy rains and harsh winds. Often the bizarre curves of the highlands are compared to praying monks and women’s hats.
Among the stone blocks, one can also see quite characteristic figures. One of these was the figure of a turtle, near which there are always those who want to be photographed.
4. Amboro National Park
Established in 1984, the site is located 150 km from Santa Cruz. The park has several climatic zones typical for the jungles of South America. Here you can get acquainted with the pristine nature of the continent and get a complete picture of the diversity of the animal and plant communities. The site is protected from hunting, mining and deforestation. Travelers climbing higher into the mountains will be able to see beautiful landscapes of volcanoes, gorges, waterfalls, mountain ranges. Here is the fort Samaipata – the ruins of an ancient Indian city.
5. Plaza Murillo
The square, renamed after the national hero Pedro Domingo Murillo, is considered the heart of the city of La Paz. In the center stands a bronze statue of President Gualberto Villarroel, and locals like to spend their free time on the benches.
In 1946, the president was led through this square by executioners and hung from a lamppost. The same fate awaited Murillo in 1810. Therefore, the square is famous for its bloody history. Here are the main events of the city. It is surrounded on all sides by government buildings, including the presidential palace.
6. Torotoro National Park
The park is located 140 km. from Cochabamba at an altitude of about 2000 m above sea level. The territory covers 165 sq. km. Here you can see the typical features of the karst terrain – caves, valleys, Paleozoic deposits with fossils, as well as picturesque landscapes destroyed by strong winds. This is a place of pilgrimage for archaeologists and historians from all over the South American continent. Dinosaur bones and over 2,500 animal tracks have been found in Torotoro. The park is home to many birds. The red-eared macaw is of particular value.
7. Jaen Street in La Paz
The popular Jaen Street is famous for its large number of museums and cultural monuments.
The houses and the cobbled street keep the spirit of several centuries. You should definitely visit the historical museums – Museo Costumbrista and Museo de Metales Preciosos. For local residents, a special place is the House Museum of Pedro Domingo Murillo, who was the first to proclaim the independence of Bolivia. Every Bolivian is obliged to visit this house at least once. The Musée de Litoral keeps the memory of the dramatic events of the country’s defeat in the Pacific War. There are also many authentic shops and souvenir shops on the street.
8. Potosí Mint
Potosi is called the Silver City of Bolivia. It is here that up to 50% of the world’s precious metal reserves are concentrated. It is extremely difficult to pass by the National Mint, as it occupies a huge area in the central part of the city. The modernization of the architectural complex was carried out by Salvador de Villa. Here is a collection of coins of various eras and devices for their minting, mineral rocks and other artistic values.
Mascaron, which appeared in 1865, became the symbol of this attraction of Bolivia. Who exactly is depicted on the mask is still not known.
9. Tiwanaku
The ancient town is located 15 km from the southern shore of Lake Titicaca and is protected by UNESCO. Behind the nondescript ruins lies an interesting history of an ancient civilization. It was a rich and prosperous state with beautiful architecture. You can see the Akapana pyramid, the Kalasasaya temple, the Ponce and Monk monoliths, the gates of the Moon and other preserved monuments. Scientists have explored only 30% of the territory. Some of the items found during the excavations are kept in the Museum of Precious Metals and in the National Archaeological Museum in La Paz. For the Bolivians, Tiunaco is considered a sacred place.
10. Laguna Colorada
One of Bolivia’s most amazing sights, Lake Laguna Colorada is located in the national conservation area of Eduardo Avaroa in the southwest of the country.
The place surprises with its rich red-brown color. The attraction is recognized as an object of international importance according to the 1971 Convention. The area of the lake is almost 60 sq. m., but the depth only in some places exceeds 30 cm. In many areas, the coast is covered with a dense layer of borax and forms bizarre islands. Here you can see thousands of flamingos moving in shallow water or standing with their beaks in the water. In the aquatic environment there are nutrient bacteria that attract many different birds.
11. Witch Market
Tourists love this unusual and strange place in La Paz, shrouded in secrets and legends. However, this market is designed not only for visitors, but also for local residents. Here you can find a wide variety of goods, however, not quite common for Europeans. At the witch market, you can buy medicinal herbs, amulets, amulets, silver, knitted clothes, clay and wooden figurines, and other sacred things. Sorcerers and shamans act as sellers, and you definitely shouldn’t be afraid of them.
On the contrary, with the help of a ritual with a dried toad, you can attract wealth.
12. Laguna Verde
The emerald green lake is located on the border with Chile, in the southwest of Bolivia. The color of the water is due to the high content of minerals in it. The lake is beautifully bordered by shores of black volcanic stone. Travelers from all over the world come here to enjoy the amazing scenery against the backdrop of the Licancabur volcano and admire the flamingos. Icy winds are considered a common occurrence here, and the water temperature can reach up to -56 degrees C. Swimming is popular in winter, and the best time to visit is from April to October.
13. Cristo de la Concordia
The famous 34.2 m high statue of Jesus Christ is located on the San Pedro hill in Cochabamba. It is 2.44 meters higher than the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, popular in all guidebooks. Construction began in 1987 and was completed in 1994.
Inside it is hollow and equipped with a staircase of 1399 steps. Convenient observation platforms are located in the hands of the monument. The left hand points south and the right hand points north. The steel and concrete statue weighs approximately 2,200 tons. You can get to the sights by taxi, bus, cable car or steps.
14. Cemetery of trains
The town of Uyuni attracts tourists with the presence of a cemetery of locomotives a few kilometers from it. Bolivian Railways locomotives from the 1900s are abandoned here. Once upon a time, important transport routes passed through this place and the city had big plans. Now the trains are still well preserved, but time and the hot climate take their toll. Local residents are reluctant to saw up iron cars for scrap, as transportation from a distant region costs a considerable amount. But many travelers are charged here with the spirit of history and adventure in the style of Indiana Jones.
15. Huayna Potosi
The mountain is located 25 km north of La Paz, making it one of Bolivia’s popular attractions.
Huayna Potosi has numerous routes to climb, and the site has been called “the easiest six-thousander in the world.” Perhaps this is due to the fact that the altitude from the base camp to the summit is less than 1400 km. Climbers have a good opportunity to adapt. The best months to visit are July, June, August.
16. Puma Punku
The magical building complex is located near the megalithic center of Tiunaco, 72 km from La Paz. Since its discovery by the conquistador Pedro Cieza do León in 1549, the age of this attraction has been the main subject of research. The object is a huge concentration of megaliths, among which individual buildings stand out. It is assumed that the place had a religious significance, since no traces of permanent human habitation were found there. The complex became famous thanks to the clear regular forms of stone slabs with ideal angles and geometry. The masonry impresses with its accuracy and is able to hold without the use of cement.

Gate of the Sun
The famous stone arch belongs to the creation of the ancient civilization of Chiunako. The attraction is located at an altitude of 3825 meters above sea level. The weight of the stone monolith is approximately 10 tons. The width and height of the gate is 4 m. The building is made of solid stone blocks with a relief pattern. Above the gap, you can see a mysterious creature that has the features of a man, a cat, a reptile and a condor. This creature is framed by 48 mythical characters, whose faces are turned towards the central part. The entire area of the structure is covered with hieroglyphs, which were deciphered in 1949 year. The message turned out to be an astronomical calendar with 290 days a year. A beautiful mountain panorama opens from this picturesque place.
18. Valley of Spirits
To get to the attraction, you need to cross the whole of La Paz. At the final bus station, passengers are given a choice – to see the place from a height or go to the gorge.
The territory is diverse and picturesque and is a dense ridge of rocks. Each formation rises into the sky in large clusters of mountain peaks. The formation of the area took place under the influence of mudflows and erosion for centuries. There is a belief that the spiers are the petrified souls of people. Mount Ilyimani is also located here with a height of 6438 m, which is the highest in Bolivia.
19. Viewpoint in La Paz
Many tourists want to see the main sights of Bolivia from above. One of the famous and popular viewpoints in the country is Killi Killi. It is located near the city center, about 20 minutes walk from Plaza Murillo. Hikers must be prepared for a steep climb. They say that it is from here that the best view of La Paz comes off. Access to the observation deck is free and open to everyone, and you can get there on foot or by taxi.
20. Church of San Francisco in La Paz
The church is located on the main square of the city.
Its founder is Francisco de los Anchlos Morales. The architectural masterpiece belongs to the American Baroque style and has a three-lobed facade with beautiful carvings. The decoration of the facade and altars is made in stone and gilded cutting. It was the Bolivian Liberty Bell of this church that announced the beginning of the revolution in 185. Visitors can not only enter the building, but also climb to the roof, as well as take a walk in the inner garden.
