Castillo del siglo XVI, donde además de explorarlo, pueden hacerse picnics y volar cometas.
Perfecto para un día en familia, aprendiendo y jugando.Tiene una hermosa vista y sin duda es un “must” en San Juan! Sólo ponte mucho bloqueador si vas a caminar por el paseo del Morro.
Fascinante, lleno de historia, cuya información presentada en cada parte de la fortaleza con fotos. La tienda adentro tiene libros interesantes pero son demasiados de caros.

Esta citadela del siglo 16 fue nombrada en honor al Rey Felipe II de España y sirvió de defensa contra ataques al Viejo San Juan.

The fort protected the island when it was known as the guardian of the new world with nearly half a century of military history that began with the Spanish conquistadores and ended with World War II.
Wow.. What a castle fort! Fun to climb the walls, get history of this Spanish fort from 1500s, and take in beautiful Atlantic Ocean breezes.
Stop here and walk around. Great spot for kite flying.Rich in history, El Morro is the perfect spot to explore with the family. Learn the military importance of the oldest fort in US territory. Don’t forget to bring your national park passport and kite!

On a sunny day come here in the late afternoon, around 4 or so, and spend a while lounging on the grass and watching kids fly kites. Great spot for photos. Buy a passion fruit sorbet from the vendor.

Classic, must-see site for any visitor new to PR & interested in more then just Bacardi tours, beautiful beaches, & delicious eats! (not that there’s anything wrong with the previously mentioned 🙂
It can get windy in the Fort so hold on to your hats!! Oh, and please check out the bathroom on the plaza level. It has some of the best views of the ocean.

Castillo San Felipe del Morro El fuerte de la ciudad de San Juan, Puerto Rico, llamado Castillo San Felipe del Morro pertenece al siglo XVI y su edificación intentaba tratar de proteger la ciudad de los posibles ataques provenientes del mar.
El Castillo San Felipe del Morro es uno de los elementos arquitectónicos más importante de la ciudad por su significación histórica. El fuerte se mandó a construir por españoles en el siglo XVI, convirtiéndose en el edificio de mayor tamaño construidos por españoles en el nuevo mundo La construcción data del año 1539, donde solamente encontrábamos una torre con un diseño simple dotado con varios cañones, construida mayoritariamente con piedras y situado muy cerca del mar. En el año 1587 con la ayuda de los arquitectos Juan de Tejada y el italiano Juan Bautista Antonelli se convirtió en el fuerte militar español de la zona. Entre el año 1601 y 1609 se intentó construir una barrera y bases para los muros que protegería de los ataques futuros. Estas mejoras no fueron suficientes ya que no aguantó ni un solo asalto. Los ingenieros comenzaron a diseñar un método más efectivo. Finalmente, para convertirse en el Castillo de San Felipe del Morro en la actualidad, se necesito más de 200 años de construcción.
Se añadieron dos hornabeques, el foso, el puente elevador y otros inmuebles. No fue hasta 1787 cuando se terminó los seis niveles que encontramos en la actualidad en la estructura de este fuerte. El Castillo de San Felipe del Morro tiene una altura de 40 metros con murallas de hasta 7 metros de espesor. En su interior encontramos todo un cumulo de laberinto, calabozos, rampas y otras habitaciones. A nivel de arquitectura estamos hablando de un edificio que ha sido considerado como Sitio Histórico Nacional de San Juan y Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco. Es un edificio con historia. Primero puedes encontrar la Plaza Principal de El Morro que era la zona donde las tropas se reunían para los desfiles y la inspección diaria. El pozo en el centro de la plaza es un también un bonito lugar y puede tardar un año en llenarse con agua de lluvia. Las habitaciones de alrededor dan a los lados y se utilizaron como viviendas, depósitos de almacenamiento, depósitos para la pólvora, para celdas o para disparar posiciones… sin duda tuvieron mucha vida estos lugares de la fortificación.
También había una capilla. Cómo es la fortificación En el nivel superior al oeste de la Plaza Principal está la rampa que conduce a la planta superior, allí encontrar las salidas de aire que proporcionan aire fresco a las habitaciones que hay debajo. Podrás hacer fotos increíbles desde esta zona de la fortaleza. En el nivel superior también podrás encontrar el faro que fue reconstruido en 1908. Desde el nivel superior podrás tener excelentes vistas del cementerio de San Juan, al este y al oeste por la bahía podrás ver los restos de la fortaleza de San Juan de la Cruz. Después, si quieres llegar hasta los niveles más bajos tendrás que dirigirte de nuevo a la Plaza Principal y llegar a estos niveles bajos gracias a la escalera o rampa que hay justo enfrente de la entrada de El Morro o tomando la escalera triangular al este de la plaza principal. En esta zona baja era donde estaban los cañones de la fortaleza. Esta construcción pertenece nada menos que al siglo XVI y fue construida para proteger a la ciudad de los ataques de mar, unos ataques que eran muy frecuentes en la época para conquistar tierras y saquear las poblaciones.
Este fuerte se ha convertido en uno de los elementos más representativos de la antigua ciudad y ha llegado hasta hoy en día. Fue uno de los monumentos más populares incluso en los tiempos de las colonias españolas y ahora la misma fortaleza se puede encontrar en una isla rocosa y se ve fácilmente porque sobresale. Fue construido en 1539 y era tan sólo una torre sencilla, con un diseño que fue modificado varias décadas más tarde, en 1587 a manos de Juan de Tejada y Juan Bautista Antonelli para convertirlo en una increíble fortificación militar español establecido en la época y que era respetado por todos.
